It is a good point DRWU, lets face fact, most ET images are out of Hollywood’s studios along with the hubcap making the buzzing noise. No doubt there are ETs similar to us and more than likely it is them that are the advanced species but we would have to evaluate their home planet to get a rough idea of what shape or form they would be and as for their social behavior it could be similar or maybe similar to the hive social behavior, we just do not know for sure and that goes for us loonies that have had the abduction experience, we just do not know.

Why do we automatically assume that ET looks any different to us?
I have never understood this reasoning at all.
We can't possibly know what they look like.
If one DOES assume, for the sake of arguement, that creatures of intelligence exist on another planet, they just might be identical to us! Why would they look any different?
Just my opinion people. But I would really welcome a well reasoned arguement on this.
I find the subject extremely interesting.

Any who might be watching us here would look identical to us. As a reason why, I point to that famous broadcast by Orson Welles in 1938. They would make certain they did, even if they did not.

Under our level of gravity, the bipedal humanoid shape would undoubtedly be universal. It's a very efficient design. As far as identical appearance is concerned, that's debatable.

Here's a question destined to make sparks fly. Why do the alien greys match the description of bodies found of people who hid from firestorms during WWII bombing raids in bathtubs or similar perfectly?

There is absolutely no reason to believe that evolution on another world would produce beings so similar to us that they would be identical. That's simply not going to happen even with very similar planetary conditions. They might be bipedal and roughly humanoid but that's where all smilarity would end. They would look truly 'alien' to us.

Having said that and assuming space aliens are here, it's certainly possible that an advanced race could alter their appearance to resemble us ,or for the ancient alien theory proponents they could have altered us in the past to look like them, and that might account for one race but not all the alleged aliens that somehow manage to find earth.

Where are the aliens who look like Predator or like the alien in the Alien series of films? They are certainly humanoid, bipedal, and intelligent. Why no aliens with spines , bony or crest like residual anatomical form, 4 arms, or a tripod leg structure. Those are all completely feasible from an evolutionary standpoint.
Where are all the truly ugly aliens but humanoid in form?
What's wrong with this picture?

Well I don't know, but I always imagine it would be like the tall, spindly alien creature in Close Encounters. i think they are kind of robort.

I imagine them as either resembling deformed angels(roughly humanoid with wings) or as a type of octopus with thick skin for low-gravity planets. But maybe the aliens are just timelords.

8 legs for low gravity? A typo perhaps?

Wu, would you really want to meet a Klingon? Nice knowing ya! Would you have picked a fight with Worf in school? grin

Seriously now, we have talked about this. Would you show your face on a planet with natives this hostile of you didn't look exactly like then?

Ever see the movie Outlander? Where Earth was an abandoned seed colony for an alien species? I can list all sorts of reasons why any aliens visiting here would look just like us. As well as many reasons a non similar species would have absolutely zero interest here.

Well..let's go through those points:

No, I would not like to meet an angry Klingon..but Worf would be ok.

Why would they have to show their 'face'..? If they were truly alien I suppose they could remain covert as most 'aliens' seem to do anyway. But that isn't an answer about why aliens might or might not be 'humanoid'as a result of evolutionary process and it's basically a straw man position.

I acually just watched the film Outlander the other day because I like Jim Caviezel in Person Of Interest. Are we the only 2 who have seen that film? Seed colony?....I must have missed that part?

But please list those reasons why aliens visiting here would look like us so I can respond as to why they wouldn't.

And aliens who don't look like us might be interested in earth for many reasons..probably the same ones as the so-called humanoid aliens. Resources like water...elements......a rest stop....exploration of this part of the galaxy...or ones we can't even imagine.

In my my mind the fact that so many of the 'aliens' ,that people encounter, look so much like us raises a red flag with me.

@icepick, Its easier to create technologies on land(with a few exceptions, of course), and though octopi are stronger than they look, I doubt a land octopus could pick up a hammer in earth-like gravity. Plus, eight arms would make it a natural-born multitasker, perfect for using complicated machines. Plus, octopi are smart. Need more reasons?

The pictures that come close to what my aliens looked like are the ones that the nurse at Roswell 1947 crash drew for mortician Glen Dennis.

The big puzzle is my little guys had rectangle eyes.

I am not sure if this was not some kind of head gear, or if their eyes were really rectangle.

The eyes is what gets you, dark, deep, and cold.

The trouble with alien reports is that they normally follow the Hollywood syndrome; they are either portrayed as naked or wearing Lycra t shirts and trousers as in star trek. Look at the reality of ET, here we have a being on a strange hostile corrosive planet, then just assume if you went for a walk on Venus in the same attire , not a nice scenario. These guys use suits just as we would do only they do not conform to the NASA image of a space suit , they have their own design and material that would dictate they found the best answer for what they have to endure. Hence the dark eyes different shapes, no different from an astronaut wearing sun glasses or using a tinted visor.

This would depend on the type of environment they come from, and their adaption to that environment, also their evolution maybe genetically engineered.

If we are doing engineering of this kind you can assume or guess they would also have done or doing so.
