I suppose you could consider Loenard Cohen as slightly avant-garde and this certainly is, interesting lyrics and video but I prefer the singer/songwriter acoustic type folky ballads etc. Isn`t there something hypnotic about Cohen in his presence, underrated singer/songwriter, PowerKnight wink

A good song by him and written about the fashion industry which his sister was in as a fashion model and died as a result of the practices involved . At least that's what I read many years ago.
I have the best of Cohen on cd...and he is an acquired taste.

Amon Duul
Can
Neu
Camel
Genesis
Joy Division
Sranglers
Simple Minds
Cure
Sisters of Mercy

I own cd's/lp's from all of those I mentioned above.
I have heard Vespero on you tube , not familiar with the others but I'll ck them out on you tube and prog rock archives.
I have many favorites but being older I tend to favor the classic prog bands . Some of my favorites:

King Crimson
Yes
Genesis (Gabriel years)
ELP
Pink Floyd
Camel
The Canterbury school: Caravan, Hatfield, Egg, Soft Machine...etc.
Roxy Music
Procol Harum
Van Der Graaf Generator

Some newer bands:

Porcupine Tree
IQ
Astra
Wobbler

I liked the God Is An Astronaut track....nice psychedelic space rock. I have bought from many websites over the years including Synphonic, Wayside, Doug Larson, Amazon, etc. I use Prog Rock Archives online all the time to look up and listen to various prog bands. A great resource.
If you scroll back through this music thread over the last few months you'll see some of my favorite songs posted .I also like some hard rock and blues and currently enjoying joe Bonamassa. I have an eclectic taste also and like some prog folk and jazz as well.

Anyone remember Starcastle a progressive rock band that never quite got the break and respect they probably deserved, I have the Real To Reel album but it`s not on par with their first two albums and a little more of a commercial edge sound.
Some said they were a little Yes in sound and style but I never got around in buying the first two and regarded the best albums they created. PowerKnight wink

Starcastle were indeed heavily influencd by Yes. IMo the second lp was their best though many like the first one better.

Comparison has often been suggested by many from where Van Halen gained some of their inspiration from, Eddie Van Halen has in the past said Montrose gave the band many ideas, ironic Sammy Hagar was once a member who then went on to front Van Halen.
Never been a Metallica fan I find them vastly overrated in my opinion, PowerKnight wink

I think Montrose , RIP, and Van halen are both excellent guitarists , but I never cared for the music/songs either band wrote. I agree with you on Metallica...overrated imo.

Eddie Van Halen isn`t really ranked alongside my fave`s, I have a top 5 guitarist poll and Eddie might make my top 10 list. But he was very innovative and ahead of his time, I`m not really up on Montrose so much I have a couple of vinyl albums but never got around to playing them!
It will be impossible for me to play and digest my entire music collection as I often can`t find the time to so, I have other interests in life and I keep buying more music in different formats. Along with discovering so many different genre`s of music I had no interest in the past, but music is my life, PowerKnight wink

J.S. Bach/Baroque Masterpieces including the grand opus Tocatta & Fugue in D Minor, you just have to wonder the beautiful thoughts running through his mind composing such a masterpiece, it sends the shivers through my soul, PowerKnight wink
