Ignoring the music for the moment (I have it all on LP) would anyone like to offer an explanation as to why the astronauts are illuminated from the front when, going by their shadow, the Sun is more or less behind them ?

Remember, on the Moon it is virtually all light or dark, no atmosphere means no refracted light.

Sys,

I believe you may be the one responsible to the extra wide posts; I have a nose for these things, But not one of those depicted.

Could you please correct the picture.

They had a light source they brought with them so they could take pics of themselves.

One that didn't cause any shadows behind them or override the shadows in front ?

There were no extra light sources brought by the astronauts or flash. The surface reflects light as well as lunar dust. Nothing happening here that is not explainable unless one wants to believe the landings were faked and the hoaxers were stupid not keeping the fronts dark. But they would then have messed up by not accounting for reflection and the moon hoax crowd would be using the lack of the extra illumination as proof it was staged. rolleyes

Ed,

Yet the deep shadowing is a strong feature in many other pictures . Technically the front of them should be in darkness, silhouetted against the incoming light.

I am not pushing any conspiracy theory. Just wondering.

Also wondering what that bright reflection on each helmet is. As the men are facing away from the Sun.

Sys,

You choice.

Music.

'We're going wrong' Disraeli Gears; Cream.

Fabulously sad riff there.

All I can propose is that each image has to be looked at separately and taking into account the many variables from the camera settings, exposure, lighting, environment, film and even the processing. There are thousands of images and one can find all types of effects that people think look incorrect. However, many times they are trying to apply their mindset from personal observations and experiences using their eyes here on earth. That's an entirely different experience vs. taking hundreds of pictures themselves here and on the moon and noting what then looks strange and understanding them. How many photography experts understand or are even aware of the unique conditions on the moon and Mars? Most don't but they are often quoted in claims of these image anomalies.

I think these are all explainable by fundamental principles. Of course, every single image can't be 100% explained because there will be unknown variables.
