cool ~ cool ~ cool

TO WIT:

"Timothy Learys' dead.
No, no no no he's outside:
Looking in."

Beginning in the 1950s the Central Intelligence Agency began a research program code named Project MKULTRA. Experiments included administering LSD to CIA employees, military personnel, doctors, other government agents, prostitutes, mentally ill patients, and members of the general public in order to study their reactions, usually without the subject's knowledge.

The MKU project was revealed in the US congressional Rockefeller Commission report. When former CIA Director, Admiral Stansfield Turner was asked whether or not the CIA supported Timothy Leary or gave Leary LSD, he replied only, “The CIA gave it to those who were doing the research.”

In an interview for High Times magazine in February 1978, Leary said:

“If you look back, many things that we thought were accidents turned out were not accidents. The entire LSD movement itself was sponsored originally by the CIA, to whom I give great credit. I would not be here today if it had not been for the foresight and prestige of the CIA psychologists, so give the CIA credit for being truly an intelligence agency. ”

noun

noun: conspiracy; plural noun: conspiracies

ZETAR...

You can also thank Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters, for the rise of the LSD subculture.

One flew east, one flew west...

It still (disappointingly) has the Agency's paws all over it. Ken Kesey started tripping when he volunteered to take acid at the Menlo Park VA Clinic about 1958 or so. It was part of the gov's handy work and involved researchers from Stanford, if I recall correctly. There's a fairly high likelihood the CIA sponsored the Pranksters, at least in part, such as renting venues, and they almost certainly supplied them with party supplies for distribution from town to town, as I interpret it. Kesey ended up employed at the clinic for a while and went on to write the classic, 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'.

Truckin' got my chips cashed in. Keep truckin', like the do-dahman
Together, more or less in line, just keep truckin' on.

Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street.
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street.
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.

Dallas, got a soft machine; Houston, too close to New Orleans;
New York's got the ways and means; but just won't let you be, ohno.

Most of the cast that you meet on the streets speak of truelove,
Most of the time they're sittin' and cryin' at home.
One of these days they know they better get goin'
Out of the door and down on the streets all alone.

for my French friends who lost theirs.
Où est mon esprit ?
Versions: #1#2

Stop !

Les pieds en l'air, la tête sur le sol
Essaie ce délire et tourne, ouais
Ta tête dégringolera
Mais y a rien dedans
Et tu te demanderas

(refrain)
Où est mon esprit ?
Où est mon esprit ?
Où est mon esprit ?
Bien loin, dans l'eau
Je le vois qui nage

Je nageais dans les Caraïbes
Les animaux se cachaient derrière les rochers
Sauf les petits poissons
Mais ils m'ont dit qu'il jure*
Qu'il essaie de me parler, na na na**

(refrain)

Les pieds en l'air, la tête sur le sol
Essaie ce délire et tourne, ouais
Ta tête dégringolera
A moins qu'y ait quelque chose dedans
Et tu te demanderas

(refrain)

Les pieds en l'air, la tête sur le sol

Essaie ce délire et tourne, ouais

JJ,
Being into the whole intel deception thing you should read Acid Dreams by Lee and Schlain...if you haven't already.
The cia was probably the one who spread the drug and encouraged it's use to test it's capabilities.

Yeah, that seems to pretty much be the consensus among researchers at this point. Thanks for the book recommendation! I'll check it out.

One could add that many related circumstances suggest that the drug industry offered the Agency many more opportunities over the years for intelligence gathering and creating revenue. Gary Webb ('Kill the Messenger') and Air America of the Vietnam era come to mind, for examples. Robbie Graham of the website 'Silver Screen Saucers' has some pretty good stuff on CIA and drug trafficking, along with his research into Hollywood's role in ufology.
