Yeah, I was never really into knowing names all that much. Some just made themselves more prevalent is all.

Of course you've got the world's best answer tool under your fingertips there as well. But not to worry. I'll grant you the bennie of the doubts here that you're so into obscure prog rock that you just know. But Weather Report makes the list of obscure among the obscure. The niche that exists for music too technical to sell. Music like Deep Purple's Concerto for Guitar and Violin, or Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Some of us thought it was really cool. But, unfortunately, most people couldn't have cared less. Some people, excuse me, most people don't seem to appreciate a beautiful masterpiece of music. Something that I find extremely sad.

Take care
Tim

I used to listen to Weather Report while in college and I have several lp/cd's by them so that's why I knew his name ,but I do have an extensive collection mostly of prog rock and psychedelic rock with some classic rock, folk, jazz ,and even classical mixed in.
Actually for me Weather Report is not very obscure.

Here's one I am currently into....

There is a distinct difference between what the general public sees as obscure, and what a true audiophile sees as obscure (very little). And, of course, it also really helps to live in a section of the USA where the music network of the major universities have been in use for broadcasting programs to train their pupils. I outright cringe at the thought of what impact that might have on our diversity of styles and quality. It sounds like you may have been exposed to that cornucopia of diversity yourself during university days? Up here, the U radio out of Seattle is powerful enough to reach the outlying areas, but the rumor afoot is that it might take some donations to maintain our local radio to the levels we are accustomed to. Time will tell.

Ah, Seeker. Yes, we must keep the memory and recognition for all of these people going. Music is special IMO. It touches the soul. And has the ability to heal it to some degree.

itīs getting dark... too soon... a threatening silence...
surrounding me... a wind comes up from the islands...
distance fades to stormy grey
washed out from the deep of the ocean
here I will stand to face your wrath...
while all the others are praying

calm down my heart... donīt beat so fast...
donīt be afraid just once in a lifetime
no rain can wash away my tears
no wind can soothe my pain
you made me doubt, you made me fear
but now Iīm not the same
you took my wife, my unborn son...
torn into the deep of the ocean
I donīt pretend that I love you
īcause there is nothing left to loose

and when silence comes back to me
I find myself feeling lonely
standing here on the shores of destiny
I find myself feeling lonely
I had a life to give... many dreams to live...
donīt you know that youīre losing so much this time
beyond the waves... I will be free
while all the others are praying

calm down my heart...

the love in you, it does not burn,
there is no lesson you can learn
and there are sounds you cannot hear,
and there are feelings you canīt feel

calm down my heart... donīt beat so fast...
donīt be afraid just once in a lifetime

I donīt pretend that I love you
and this time Iīm not scared of you

[Children of the Grave]

Revolution in their minds - the children start to march
Against the world in which they have to live
and all the hate that's in their hearts
They're tired of being pushed around
and told just what to do
They'll fight the world until they've won
and love comes flowing through

Children of tomorrow live in the tears that fall today
Will the sun rise up tomorrow bringing peace in any way?
Must the world live in the shadow of atomic fear?
Can they win the fight for peace or will they disappear?

So you children of the world,
listen to what I say
If you want a better place to live in
spread the words today
Show the world that love is still alive
you must be brave
Or you children of today are
Children of the Grave, Yeah!

Of course with BOC we have to remember this one don't we?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiHRm2DioMA

Wasn't too long after that they lost it on us it seems. Well, they still had plenty of good tunes.

Thanks for the tip. I gave up on them after a bit. Didn't even sound like them anymore.

There were quite a few bands did that to us in the 80s. But if you stopped to look at the lineup you would often find the problem. Only original member would be the drummer or something like that. Worst case I ever saw was when Deep Purple went on hiatus in the late 70s. One day a DJ played something that was supposed to be new Purple, but it was more like WTF? I called the station and found out that there wasn't a single member except some bass player they kicked out in the 60s. Took a lot of guts to try and pull that one off. Tactless.

Second would be what happened to Yes in my opinion. You at least have to keep the core sound don't you? Or maybe I'm just picky. Who knows?

No..I agree that once the core players leave it's just not the same sound .
I thought Yes was solid until after Going For The One...
Tormato and the rest just didn't have that same feel. But many of the core people were on the later ones.

[A Hazy Shade of Winter - Original]

[The Bangles cover version 1987]

Time, time, time, see what's become of me.
While I looked around for my possibilities,
I was so hard to please.
But look around, the leaves are brown,
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter.
Hear the salvation army band
Down by the riverside, it's bound to be a better ride
Than what you've got planned,
Carry your cup in your hand.
And look around you, the leaves are brown now,
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter.
Hang on to your hopes, my friend.
That's an easy thing to say but if your hopes should pass away,
It's simply pretend, that you can build them again.
Look around, the grass is high, the fields are ripe,
It's the springtime of my life.
Oh, seasons change with scenery,
Weaving time in a tapestry,
Won't you stop and remember me?
At any convenient time.
Funny how my memory skips while looking over manuscripts
Of unpublished rhyme,
Drinking my vodka and rhyme.
I look around, the leaves are brown,
There's a patch of snow on the ground,
Look around...
