Wishbone Ash, Atomic Rooster very good bands not too sure on the trivia drwu23? 70s progressive rock defined the era along with the HR/HM tag, we also had progressive HR/HM bands that fused the combination to a great skill, Rush 2112 springs to mind from 76 loosely based on Ayn Rand`s stunning classic Anthem.
A real power rock trio but around the Permanent Waves album Rush took a slightly different direction one I wasn`t too keen on. PowerKnight wink

That was Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick...his first band was Fuse.
I like the later Rush.... even the newer ones. Bands always progress and the ones who don't get stale imo.

One of my FAV's too
I guess you play then?
cause that kid plays more then just one part,
in some of his other works, he plays all parts,
with just him and one 6 string.

That guy is talented, I have a couple of Kansas albums but all on vinyl I need a best of comp on CD. Rush are very progressive and I love the band great musicians but I prefer the sci-fi inspired period.
Hemispheres for me was the real last great Rush album, I like the first three harder rock albums just before 2112 as well.
Saw them live in 1984 on the Signals tour, want a try on an acoustic workout unlike any other? Checkout Van Halen/Spanish Fly from the second Van Halen album...Eddie Van Halen re-invented the electric guitar not forgetting the acoustic!!! Way back in the late 70s, genius, PowerKnight wink

I play a little acoustical guitar but nowhere near as good as him.

The best or finest guitar players...I would say generally speaking Jimi Hendrix was clearly way ahead of his time. And you could argue he achieved everything in his very short time of being around. Had he lived longer I`m sure his maturity would have developed and he would have been able to refine his unique style and sound into something else. Sadly it wasn`t to be, I would say the likes of Blackmore/Page were again the finest in their field.
A few other brilliant guitar players I personally go for are the likes of Leslie West/Uli Jon Roth/Michael Schenker/Yngwie J Malmsteen but Blackmore has always been my guitar player.
This of course is without the other genre`s of music in which there are many great players in different styles of music. But many HM guitar players are a lot more versatile than people realise and can play different forms incorporated in hard rock/metal music, PowerKnight wink

IMO the best in rock from the old days are the following: no particular order since they are all great:
Hendrix
Clapton
Beck
Page
Allman
Santana
...of course there are many others and new guys like Bonamossa.

One of my favorite Beck guitar parts. IMO he's better with the jazz-fusion approach incorporated into rock songs and his technique and precision are usually better than Page or Clapton or Hendrix who were sometimes a bit sloppy but heh they are all great.

Satriani is a very good player along with the likes of Vai however they actually came from the school of the Van Halen type protege`s and although they are excellent it was Eddie who invented this particular type style guitar and in my opinion was the better, created in the middle to late 70s.
Good list there drwu23, at the end of the day there will always be argument to who was the best but each have their merit, personally I don`t think the current crop of younger guitar slingers are as good as the early legends but some have the quality.
What I find ironic is because Blackmore never played in the Yardbirds ie, Beck/Clapton/Page etc and don`t me wrong they are great players no doubt about it. Blackmore is the black sheep pardon the pun, the press hate him he is very obnoxious and arrogant and basically due to his personality he has never exactly done himself any favours!
He has to be the one of if not the most self destructive guitarists there has ever been and he never did drugs or booze!!!
Destroyed Purple at their peak and destroyed Rainbow at their peak and there was much more to come from the two super bands. The daft commercial dross he spewed out after 1980 was a travesty and I have never forgiven him to this very day, that said he now has his Blackmore`s Night project which has been around for about ten years.
Rennaisance/medieval themed and it`s very refreshing stuff and I love it, Ritchie Blackmore forever! PowerKnight wink
