Satriani is a very good player along with the likes of Vai however they actually came from the school of the Van Halen type protege`s and although they are excellent it was Eddie who invented this particular type style guitar and in my opinion was the better, created in the middle to late 70s.
Good list there drwu23, at the end of the day there will always be argument to who was the best but each have their merit, personally I don`t think the current crop of younger guitar slingers are as good as the early legends but some have the quality.
What I find ironic is because Blackmore never played in the Yardbirds ie, Beck/Clapton/Page etc and don`t me wrong they are great players no doubt about it. Blackmore is the black sheep pardon the pun, the press hate him he is very obnoxious and arrogant and basically due to his personality he has never exactly done himself any favours!
He has to be the one of if not the most self destructive guitarists there has ever been and he never did drugs or booze!!!
Destroyed Purple at their peak and destroyed Rainbow at their peak and there was much more to come from the two super bands. The daft commercial dross he spewed out after 1980 was a travesty and I have never forgiven him to this very day, that said he now has his Blackmore`s Night project which has been around for about ten years.
Rennaisance/medieval themed and it`s very refreshing stuff and I love it, Ritchie Blackmore forever! PowerKnight wink

I like Blackmore and of course own the Deep Purple lp/cd's..never really got into Rainbow. I'll ck them out again.
I also picked up a couple of the Night Project cd's when they came out because I like folk with an edge.
While I think he's very good I just don't think he has that intangible something that Clapton, Beck, and Page have.

Saw these guys in '74 and listened to them a lot in college. Best fusion band ever imho. Some think he is one of the greatest if not the single greatest technician/ guitar player. I don' t t hink anyone plays any faster and cleaner....but fusion is not everyone's cup of tea.

Never been a real big fusion fan a little dabble here and there is fine but not on this scale for me. Intangible...seriously he can play the most complex and intricate guitar structure`s along with his rhythm and his solos can be the most simple at times using single notes that last forever.
Many called it perverse virtuosity, live he never ever played the same track the same during live shows, his improvisations took on the mood he was in night after night.
An innovator like many of his generation, look what happened when he left Purple in 75...the band died. Re-formed again in 84 left again band get another player in...another demise. No Blackmore no Purple thee core essence of the band, Rainbow...only get the 75-78 period...the Ronnie James DIO years and considered their golden period.
Checkout Rising from 76...oh and try Stargazer from the album...the benchmark of hard rock/metal, something Zeppelin never produced along with the album.
Blackmore`s Night for whatever reason have never actually hit their full potential and it looks like they never will, some stunning music but much mediocre and weak material and often inconsistent. Finally try this one...Weiss Heim an instrumental from 1980, a Rainbow track used as a B-side but it`s the most sublime guitar instrumental you will ever hear in your entire life!!!
This could have been a fluke hit had their record company and management had their brains sorted, a golden chance squandered, try youtube it`s gotta be there...haunting but beautiful, PowerKnight

One of my favorite Beck guitar parts. IMO he's better with the jazz-fusion approach incorporated into rock songs and his technique and precision are usually better than Page or Clapton or Hendrix who were sometimes a bit sloppy but heh they are all great.

Those are some legends, hero's, "GIANTS" of rock, below is some stuff, I was interested in also at that great time in rock history.
it was high school, just learning how to play my Gibson.

MR<>23,
Scorpions, was below the radar at that great time in rock History, so was Journey, both went the way of the $, changed the music, and added to much vocals/pop, UFO and the Schenker stuff was after the turn to the $.

Hi Moksha now I checked the link, briefly guys Michael Schenker was the first original lead guitarist in the Scorpions. He appeared on the debut Scorpions album Lonesome Crow back in 72 ish!!!
He then quickly jumped ship in the same year to join UK band UFO, the Scorpions quickly established Ulrich Roth as their lead guitarist now called Uli Jon Roth.
He stayed with them from 72 right up to 78 he then left to pursue a solo career, Michael Schenker briefly rejoined in 79 as a guest player on their Lovedrive album and a couple of brief guest spots on the tour from 79-80.
He quit to form his own band, the Scorpions fell foul from 1980 onwards and developed this American sounding style which became very popular among HR/HM bands of that time. Schenker is a guitar god figure and his creative force in UFO was apparent once he left in 78 the band suffered and never fully recovered, did you know his brother was the rhythm guitar player Rudolph Schenker in the Scorpions.
That said the Scorpions still had an appeal and have lasted the test of time, I still like them and hit it big with the sensational Wind Of Change classic track issued as a single some years ago.
Scorpions as well as UFO are real classic HR/HM outfits both great bands and have produced brilliant music between them both over the years, PowerKnight wink

Thanks PK,
for the data,
Journey, had a great start, with "look in to the future" and "next", then things changed for them, when they switched drummers, and got that singer, for me it was not as good.
Oh yea, I always loved the Scorpions, and the Schenker brothers.

The Dec 8 issue of Rolling Stone is all about the top 100
guitarists.

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-guitarists-20111123

1. Hendrix
2. Clapton
3. Page
4. Richards
5. Beck
6. BB King
7. Berry
8. Van Halen
9. Allman
10. Townshend

etc...

All the usual suspects are on the list but I don't agree with some of the rankings.
BTW...Blackmore is at no 50, Leslie West at 66, and neither Schenker or Roth made the cut.
