Tyrannosaurus Rex Bolan`s earlier adventures with Steve Peregrine Took hippy duo produced some of Bolan`s finest work. These were the real seeds of what Bolan was about, I have almost all his back catalogue.
After Tanx, the tax exile Bolan, Gloria Jones relationship, Bolan`s booze and drug sombre became his downfall.
Not forgetting his ego...believe it or not he did continue to produce great music and a reborn Bolan 76-77 appeared much fresher and he got his life back on track.
But bringing in Gloria Jones into the T.Rex sound and style was a big mistake, a great soul singer songwriter iin her own right but she swallowed up the whole T.Rex sound.
It was far to heavy and not quite in context, if I had to sum up Bolan in two words...COSMIC STARDUST...Bolan was something else his whole persona.
A unique nasal voice an excellent singer/songwriter/poet but he had imagination and he knew how to use it...there will never be another like him. A real genuine musical icon, PowerKnight wink

With all due respects, the T. Rex sound was too subtle to mix with much of anything. It's not like the guitar of Jimi Hendrix, the organ of Jon Lord, the voice of Elvis, or any other distinct sound produced by one of the musical geniuses we were blessed with during that period. It will fade into the background very quickly.

I remember how I once thought that the guitar of Rory Gallagher was sooo powerful. I was amazed at how easily it faded into a group of other musicians while performing with them.

No one has ever compared Bolan to Hendrix ice, Bolan had more talent than Elvis ever had.
Elvis never wrote his own music, yes he was a born entertainer and superb at what he done, Bolan is recognised and hasn`t been forgotten for his incredible talents and influence he has left behind in his legacy.
Like or not Bolan`s bubblegum pop/c**k rock stance purely as a pop artist alone created many superb simple but effective brilliant pop/rock tunes.
Hendrix couldn`t sing to save his life...Bolan has one of the most original vocal chords known to mankind...evocative very sensual he didn`t have to reach octave status just a unique sounding nasal voice.
Okay he is never put on the pedestal with the musos you mentioned but he was master at what he did.
Forget the pop tracks you have heard checkout his albums and the actual songs but delivered by a genius,
He was 100% what a real pop star should be, it`s a shame I can`t link a youtube footage.
But even something like his guest/duet apperance on the Cilla Black Show singing Life`s A Gas it`s on youtube...it`s so beautiful it`s scary...this is the goosebumps factor, an extraordinary performance from a real unique artist, PowerKnight wink

Who said anything negative PK? Only that his sound was so subtle that it is easily absorbed. BTW, I listened to his music myself.

Elvis? Only referring to the voice guy. Do you know how rare it is for one to have a voice that low which is still that rich? I think you misunderstood me. I was talking about how some artists develop a sound so distinct that you recognize them from the first note, but some don't. That's all. It was you who initially pointed out how his sound got absorbed by another. I was only pointing out how that is not unusual, that the artists who can't be absorbed are rare indeed.

Think like this:

The second you hear Ian Anderson on the flute ...... without even a full note.

Or a lick Hendrix hits on a guitar? Or Steve Howell/John McLaughlin/Alvin Lee for that matter.

Lord's evil mode organ?

How about Ann Wilson's vocals?

See what I'm saying? You recognize any of those people instantly. And there are many more. Ever hear Leo Kottke play guitar?

That's all I'm saying. I apologize if you think I was dissing an artist. I was not. Anybody who was ever able to write more than a single hit tune, and perform it well, deserves respect for their ability. But some, just like the guy I mentioned, Rory Gallagher, will simply blend. And you know what? There really isn't anything wrong with that, is there?

Anne Wilson of Heart...am I right ice, as much as I love the MTV generated Heart their early material was their creative peak. Oh...Barracuda...every time I hear Anne sing and hit those notes it gives me very pleasant thoughts grin The main music genres I despise are punk/trance/indie and rap...I mean Crap...get it, there`s a silent C in there!
