Icepick,
Thanks for the info on computer programs and music storage.....eventually I would like to upload it all.

Powerknight,
I like the tactile part and the packaging which is why I play cd's and lp's. I don't listen to any of my music from I-pods or hand held players.
I do listen to music from you tube but I wear Shure headphones with some power so I get the full range including solid bass. I have listened to songs on my daughters mp3 player etc and the sound quality is not good enough for me.

Wu, it sounds like the Cowan is the only brand of MP3 player you might like after reading that last post. They are at least a solid cut above the rest in the sound department. And in your case? Only use FLAC for compression.

That crack about sound quality was the only tip I needed. Enough to cause me to make this clear right away. Cowan players have enough power to drive your Sure headphones to their proper level/potential without distortion. This brand will blow out Sony full sized phones BTW. And you will lose none of the sound using FLAC. You sound as picky as I do, but I suspected as much.

One more thing. I didn't explain how I did the vinyl in my post because I've heard there may be new technologies available for this. When I validate/invalidate this I will let you know.

There are a couple of bone vibration technology headphones out there somewhere too. Have you heard about those or know about them?

Packaging was always part and parcel of the musical product in the past, the vinyl LP format showcased this which is an artform. The standard cassette tape...bless them still had a form of packaging, it worked and looking back at them portable and you could say ahead of their time. Okay the tape itself was often a problem but it served it`s purpose, they tried everything but nothing actually did replace it!
Even the humble vinyl 45s often had pic sleeves etc pressed in coloured and various pic discs etc, the CD still offers some very interesting additional extras such as pics with a little expanded information.
I`m strictly old school on this one and bloody proud of it guys and that`s it, the humble second hand record stores have all sadly passed away in my area.
Even the big music stores are shutting down here such as HMV, the net is also responsible for killing off the musical store and it`s product, do I often wish I was back in the 70s raiding the vinyl stores...now that was a buzz!!! PowerKnight wink

There's just one thing about those sleeves in LPs PK. Are you aware that is what caused a lot of that scratching which took place on later LPs? The early ones were actually hard to hurt, but like everything else, they got thin and cheap.

One thing you could do with the early ones if they did get scratched beyond repair? Deadly weapon when used like a frisbee., grin

So I take it Alligator Records isn't prevalent in the UK? Over here they have their own stores in the major cities. Mostly heavy duty blues, but I like blues.

I think FLAC might be what my friend uses to upload his cd's and lp's onto his drive. He burns them onto disc for me from this system.
So far I just have a handful (about 100) ripped via normal pc software that I then burn for people and listen to for myself.
I'll ask my son in law about headphones and ipods since he is a tech fan and works for Best Buy in their home office in Minnesota.
I'm not real picky but I grew up with old stereos and loud speakers and I'm used to that power level and heavy sound quality that small devices just don't seem to have.

Yeah, bone vibration tech isn't new (remember the bone phone?), but it's rare. What can be cool about it is having your own private sound while still hearing everything else.

My favorite player for everyday use remains one I made by gutting a decent pair of Sony phones, stuffing them in shooter's headphones for a shooting range, and making a small case on the side of one of the earpieces for the player. No cords ...... very good for active outdoor use. I've come to like these players.

I guess you'd know, or will find out if FLAC is your friend's choice. In my opinion it's the best format for sound quality. No DRM stuff built in, just music. If high compression is a must, 320 bit rate MP3, but room is less of an issue all the time. I found out I have 13 days continuous on that one player.

Sir Power,

In my life I've played the Trumbone and Cello both badly I might add. I'm now learning the Harmonica. So far this instrument is my calling.

drwu23 now that brought back many great memories and I have never seen any Gabriel/Genesis footage until now. I have this on vinyl Genesis live featuring that particular era but never got around to the CD version. What a beautiful track what a song, Gabriel has a real hypnotic prescence about him and it`s uneasily spooky it`s that good. Coupled with his theatrics he was a prog legend of the highest order, the original best singer Genesis ever had, that takes some beating, what memories I have when I first bought that album all those years ago, cheers PowerKnight wink

I'm a big fan 0f the Gabriel period Genesis. Have it all on both lp and cd and the box cd set with live Lamb Lies Down also. One of my all time favorite prog bands .

This another of my favorites by them but it's an old video clip...sorry .Still worth viewing imho.
