In a major haul, the Thane Police have seized almost 9 kg of radioactive depleted uranium, a top official said here on Wednesday. "We have confirmed that the substance seized is depleted uranium. It is radioactive and extremely dangerous... DU is used in weapons and armaments all over the world," Thane Police Commissioner Parambir Singh told IANS of the unexpected haul. Following a tip-off, Anti-Chain Snatching Squad Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Doiphode and his team recently laid a trap at a location on the desolate Ghodbunder Road connecting Mumbai and Thane. As expected, two persons arrived there near a hotel on motorcycles carrying dark blue pouches, a box and other material -- both were detained. The police recovered 8.9 kg of some uranium-type substance and also laboratory test report indicating it was uranium. According to initial investigations, it was brought from abroad and was intended for sale to some unknown parties here. The two lab reports of different samples recovered along with the seizure said the substance was depleted uranium, one having 87.70 per cent uranium and other 79.50 per cent uranium content. "Since this is a banned item and not something available in the open market, we are not able to determine its exact value," Doiphode told media persons. However, some independent media reports claimed its value to be around Rs 3 crore per kg. Joint Police Commissioner Ashutosh Thombre said they are filing a case under the Atomic Energy Act and sending samples of the substance for additional reports after which further action would be taken. The police have arrested the two persons and further investigation is on.

Reindeer are still very radioactive 30 years after Chernobyl

The holiday spirit might not totally explain what makes Rudolph's nose glow so bright.

User Image

Thirty years after a nuclear power plant exploded at Chernobyl, the reindeer that walk the picturesque, snow-capped mountains of Scandinavia are still radioactive.

User Image

They weren't the only ones affected. For generations, the Sami people, native to the Arctic North, lived in harmony with nature.

Many worked as boazovázzi, or 'reindeer walkers', herding the animals over hundreds of miles of terrain and selling their meat come slaughter season. The reindeer were a cultural and economic centrepiece for the Sami people.

But the explosion - considered the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history - coated the earth with toxic material, turned the reindeer radioactive, and poisoned the Sami people's way of life.

Looking In The Wrong Places Ignoring Fukushima
How much effort does it take to repoint the same Laser To the Pacific?
Why does NSA choose to watch paint dry while a slow train approaches?

A tiny organism at the base of the food chain, but vital for life to exist on Earth, is under threat, according to data collected by a NASA satellite that has been firing a laser into the ocean for a decade.

Phytoplankton, a tiny plant organism living near the Earth’s poles, is an essential food source for ocean dwellers. It also sucks in carbon dioxide, assisting with the planet’s carbon cycle, contributing to up to 85 percent of the planet’s breathable oxygen.

The new findings by NASA worryingly indicate that the species' “boom and bust” population is heavily threatened by melting ice-caps caused by global warming.

Study finds that small, environmental changes in polar food webs greatly influence peak and decline of phytoplankton https://t.co/IzFpXo5ZDopic.twitter.com/iEgby6S1hS
— NASA (@NASA) December 21, 2016

The organism’s population has been difficult to study due to “limited sunlight and persistent clouds” around the polar regions, making readings hard to detect on satellite sensors. Using the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP), a giant laser beam has been studying phytoplankton since 2006 in great detail.

“CALIOP was a game-changer in our thinking about ocean remote sensing from space,” research scientist Chris Hostetler said in a statement released by NASA. “We were able to study the workings of the high-latitude ocean ecosystem during times of year when we were previously completely blind.”

— RT (@RT_com) December 21, 2016

The new findings, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, indicate that the organisms’ population around Antarctica was closely tied to ice cap coverage, not to annual growth rates as previously believed. As rising temperatures melt the ice, raising the ocean temperature, phytoplankton population decreases.

The population was also found to cause “phytoplankton blooms” in the Arctic region, when its growth rates allow it to outgrow the fish that prey on it. As its growth rate stops, the fish that depend on it catch up.

“The take-home message is that if we want to understand the biological food web and production of the polar systems as a whole, we have to focus both on changes in ice cover and changes in the ecosystems that regulate this delicate balance between predators and prey,” marine plankton expert Michael Behrenfeld explained.

Hanford, Not Fukushima, is the Big Radiological Threat to the West Coast

by ROBERT JACOBS

User Image

There is a dangerous radiological threat to the West Coast of the United States that puts the health of millions of Americans at risk. It includes dangers to public health, dangers to the food supply, and dangers to future generations from long-lived radionuclides, including some of the most toxic material in the world. It is not Fukushima, it is Hanford. While radiation from the Fukushima nuclear meltdowns is reaching the West Coast, carried across the ocean from Japan, the radiation from Hanford is already there, has been there for 70 years, and is in serious risk of catastrophe that could dwarf the effects of Fukushima even on Japan.

Hanford, on the Columbia River in Eastern Washington State, is the site where the United States produced the majority of its plutonium for nuclear weapons during the Cold War. These tens of thousands of American nuclear weapons were built as an end product of the high levels of plutonium production at Hanford. The first three nuclear reactors on Earth were built at Hanford, with a total of nine nuclear power plants being built there eventually. Nuclear power plants operated for ten years in this world before they were ever used to generate electricity. Electricity is a secondary purpose for nuclear power plants, they were designed and built as plutonium manufacturing plants.

Hanford was the first of these plutonium production sites. The two worst radiological disasters (besides nuclear weapon detonations) in the first four decades of the Atomic Age were accidents at the plutonium production sites of the United Kingdom and the Soviet Union, both in 1957. Military plutonium production sites remain among the most contaminated sites on Earth. During the period of operation more than 67 metric tons of plutonium were manufactured at Hanford. Hanford is home to 60% (by volume) of all of the high level radioactive waste stored in the United States. Nearly 80% of the Department of Energy’s inventory of spent nuclear fuel rods are stored just 400 yards away from the Columbia River. (Statistics taken from Physicians for Social Responsibility webpage)

"The Green Run

In December 1949 the United States deliberately released an immense amount of radiation into populated areas at the Hanford Site during the notorious Green Run. It was the largest intentional release of radiation conducted by the U.S. government. While nuclear testing in Nevada exposed many people to significant amounts of radiation, this was a byproduct of the desire to test weapons. In the Green Run the intention was specifically to release the radiation into the Hanford area. The Green Run was conducted in reaction to the test of the first Soviet nuclear weapon in Kazakhstan several months earlier. The first indications that the Soviets had successfully tested a nuclear weapon came when sensors at Hanford picked up the radiation several days later. It was decided to release radiation “similar” to that of the Soviet test to develop and hone detection equipment and better analysis of the Soviet program.

The Battle of Evermore

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pii1LCgvumQ

The Queen of Light took her bow,
And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom,
And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight,
And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe,
Rest not to lock your homes.
Side by side we wait the might
Of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder down in the valley below,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care,
Repay, do not forget, no, no.

Dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.
The apples turn to brown and black,
The tyrant's face is red.

Oh war is the common cry,
Pick up your swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad
That mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long, the beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall,
The ring wraiths ride in black, ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow,
Shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.
The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back.
Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining,
The clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness,
The sunlight blinds his eyes.

Biological Hazard in Canada on December 28 2016 04:14 AM (UTC).

A marine mystery is confounding residents of southwest Nova Scotia who are watching thousands of dead fish, starfish, crabs, clams, scallops and lobster wash up on the shore. Residents of Plympton, a small community in Digby County, say they have been finding dead herring on the shore of St. Mary's Bay for more than a month, but recently other marine life has started washing up dead. Dead fish have also been found on the shores of the Annapolis Basin. "We started finding starfish, crabs, flounder. We found ocean perch and then yesterday we started finding scallops on the beach and like I said everything's dead... we'd like to know what's going on," said Karl Cole. "It's just really sad to see, you know, hundreds of starfish, shellfish. I grew up clamming here so to come to your hometown and see so much death on the beach is really sad," said Eric Hewey. Hewey took photos of the beach and posted them to his Facebook page Monday, writing: "Herring, Lobster, Bar clams, Starfish and more. No idea what caused this. Likely it could be a natural disaster. Please try not to jump to any conclusions until we get a response from Natural Resources, or another credible source." In less than a day his post has been shared almost 11,000 times and garnered more than 1,000 comments. Many people are ignoring Hewey's admonishment and suggesting their own theories about what happened. But there are still no answers. On Dec. 15, Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced that tests on the dead herring had produced negative results, meaning no infections or infectious agents had been detected in the small, silvery fish. It said it would continue testing and warned consumers to only buy herring from licensed harvesters until they figure out why the fished died. Residents say the department is aware of the latest developments and has taken samples for further testing. CTV Atlantic reached out to the department for comment on Tuesday, but did not receive a response.

Scientists Find New Kind Of Fukushima Fallout

Some of the radioactive material that escaped the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor in 2011 took a form no one was looking for, scientists have discovered. Now they have to figure out what it means for Japan and for future disasters.

The Pacific Ocean is Dying – Fukushima nuclear plant Causing Horrific Mutations

armydotmil, January 2, 2017

The Pacific Ocean appears to be dying, according to a new study recently published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California recently discovered that the number of dead sea creatures blanketing the floor of the Pacific is higher than it has ever been in the 24 years that monitoring has taken place, a phenomenon that the data suggests is a direct consequence of nuclear fallout from Fukushima.

Though the researchers involved with the work have been reluctant to pin Fukushima as a potential cause — National Geographic, which covered the study recently, did not even mention Fukushima — the timing of the discovery suggests that Fukushima is, perhaps, the cause. According to the data, this sudden explosion in so-called “sea snot,” which is the name given to the masses of dead sea creatures that sink to the ocean floor as food, has skyrocketed since the Fukushima incident occurred.

“In the 24 years of this study, the past two years have been the biggest amounts of this detritus by far,” stated Christine Huffard, a marine biologist at MBARI and leader of the study, to National Geographic.

At an ocean research station known as Station M, located 145 miles out to sea between the Californian cities of Santa Barbara and Monterey, Huffard and her colleague Ken Smith observed a sharp uptick in the amount of dead sea life drifting to the ocean floor. The masses of dead sea plankton, jellyfish, feces and other oceanic matter that typically only cover about 1 percent of the ocean floor were found to now be covering about 98 percent of it — and multiple other stations located throughout the Pacific have since reported similar figures.

Are we starting to see more than just sea life die-offs and strange behavior from the massive radioactive water dumps into the Pacific ocean from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant?

Are we to see more animal mutations that are associated with radiation? Photos from a couple places of this mutated baby whale, two heads, two tails, which looks like two whales had been fused together. (See video)

With all the strange behavior of multiple different sea creatures as well as the dead sea life scattered along 98 percent of the ocean floor, We are now seeing more proof that the Fukushima radiation is destroying us by air and by sea,
Defenders Of The Constitution !!!

In reading the paper as best I could not being a biologist or oceanographer(?) I think the correlation to Fukushima is premature especially given the report title is "Deep ocean communities impacted by changing climate over 24 y in the abyssal northeast Pacific Ocean".

Source: http://www.pnas.org/content/110/49/19838.full

Yes, there is the fact that Fukushima happened within these 24 years but I see nothing to support a scientific basis that is the cause for the studies observations except to fall back on the correlation equals causality fallacy. Another red flag for me is that this conclusion is being advocated by Infowars, NaturalNews, erenews who have clear agendas.

I wonder why the news articles use:

The Pacific Ocean is Dying – Fukushima nuclear plant Causing Horrific Mutations

Study: Dead sea creatures cover 98 percent of ocean floor off California coast; up from 1 percent before Fukushima

which seems quite a spin on the actual study intent and findings. I trust my reading and interpretation of the paper more then what any of these outlets are trying to push. Do they think people are not going to track down the paper which was conveniently(?) not directly linked or quoted from. Instead it was based on what Infowars picks up from NaturalNews who uses some person by the name of Grammy who comments on National National Geographic articles. This gives an illusion National Geographic agrees with the Fukushima connection.

Perhaps this is a candidate for fake news. grin

Ghost
They (the authors of many reports)are also ignoring the fact that China and most of the pacific rim is being fished out by mostly China but others as well. The only countries that are truly using conservation are the US and Canada.

China also uses dredging or dragging at extreme depths that other counties don't because of the damage it does! They ignore the principle of diminishing returns!
