Officials State 1/3 of the World’s Oceans May Be Contaminated with Fukushima Radiation

http://wakingtimesmedia.com/officials-state-13-of-the-worlds-oceans-may-be-contaminated-with-fukushima-radiation/

The Fukushima nuclear meltdown has had exponential repercussions on the world. When the disaster happened, the media was all over it. People were concerned and wanted action. But very quickly, the media’s eye turned to another matter, than another, than another. Now, very few people likely think about the Fukushima disaster and what mark it made on the world.

User Image

Regardless of the lack of mainstream media attention, the Fukushima nuclear disaster is still affecting the world today.

“An urgent and harmonised regional approach is essential to optimise and coordinate the application of the available skills and resources in the region in order to benchmark the possible impact of this release of radioactivity…

“The area potentially affected may encompass much of the Pacific Ocean, which covers one third of the area of the globe.”

The United Nations has warned of an oil spill south of the Iraqi city of Mosul, near the town of Qayara that was retaken from Islamic State militants some four months ago. The warnings came in a report released this week on environmental damages caused by oil fires intentionally started by retreating IS militants. U.N. satellite images published on Tuesday show environmental damage from the fires. The world body says 11 of the fires have been extinguished, but 29 continue to burn, sending thick black smoke into the air. The report warns the spill, described as new, is close to a tributary of the Tigris River, which in turn could mean an oil leak into the key artery, and that parts of the spill are on fire.

I haven't found that image yet, but I did dig this up from August 2016 :

For the past few months, a smoke plume has shifted with the winds over northern Iraq. In recent years, periodic oil fires have cast a dark pall over this arid landscape. They are one consequence of ongoing war in the region.

On August 17, 2016, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired an image (above) of dense smoke plumes roughly 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Mosul. There appear to be multiple sources of fire, most likely oil wells from the Qayyarah oil field. The images in the grid below show the plumes changing direction and thickness since they were first spotted by Landsat 8 on June 14.

The current smoke event recalls fires in neighboring Kuwait during the 1990s Persian Gulf War. Iraqi troops ignited more than 700 oil wells during that conflict.

Ronald Ferek of the U.S. Office of Naval Research saw those fires firsthand in June 1991. “We flew across whole plumes and did a cross-section, calculating how many barrels had to be burning,” he said. His team used LIDAR to quantify carbon flux and deduce the carbon dioxide emitted. The fires consumed roughly 4.6 million barrels of oil a day, according to their estimates.

At the time, some scientists warned of dire effects, including a “nuclear winter” cooling effect at Earth’s surface. Some airborne smoke particles can reflect sunlight, driving down temperatures on the ground. Following the theory, particles in the oil smoke would rise into the stratosphere and stay aloft for weeks or months over the Northern Hemisphere.
But most of the fires in Kuwait did not spill over and burn in pools standing on the ground, as predicted. Instead, they caught fire in the air, Ferek said, when oil shot out of the ground at high pressures.
“At 15,000 PSI (pounds per square inch), oil comes out like an aerosol spray can rather than a garden hose,” he said. As result, the flames were bathed in oxygen and burned more cleanly than earlier research had indicated they would.

Navajo Nation vows to fight EPA for toxic mine spill

By Joseph J. Kolb
Published January 17, 2017

The House Committee on Natural Resources released a damning report on the EPA and how they handled the August 2015 Gold King Mine disaster in Colorado, and its aftermath. (AP)

Navajo Nation officials say they are outraged the Environmental Protection Agency is refusing to pay millions of dollars in claims filed against it following the devastating Colorado Gold Mine spill.

The federal agency has accepted responsibility for the August 2015 disaster, which devastated farm and grazing lands in southern Colorado and northwest New Mexico. But it announced late last week that it was not legally able to pay claims submitted by farmers and livestock owners.

“The Navajo Nation call upon our Congressional leaders from the states of Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona to do what is right for our people by demanding that the U.S. EPA reconsider its decision and that the U.S. EPA provide full compensation to the many Navajo people who sustained extensive losses due to the spill that was caused by the agency,” Navajo Nation speaker Lorenzo Bates said last Saturday.

“When the law allows the government to hide from those whom it has harmed, the law must change,” Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) said in a statement.

In a dramatic speech on the banks of the Animas River last August, Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye announced that the tribe was filing a $159 million lawsuit for damages and $3.2 million to cover expenses that had not been paid.

The suit was in response to what the tribe said was an inadequate gesture by the EPA to reimburse them $602,000.

Last Friday, the EPA said it was legally prohibited from paying the claims because of sovereign immunity, which prohibits most lawsuits against the government. The agency said the only legal option left is to either refile the claims in federal court or have Congress authorize the payments.

This announcement added insult to injury for Lenora Williams of Upper Fruitland, N.M., who saw 14 acres of her family farm dry up after the spill.

“They are weaseling out of a big mess they made,” Williams said. “The EPA knew they did this.”

The toxic spill had a profound economic and emotional impact on Williams and her family, who have been farming on the land for at least five generations.

“We [planted] Indian corn, melons, and veggies and didn’t get to see them grow,” she said, her voice cracking. “We watched with great heartache and pain as our crops dried up.”

Williams said her family farm helps feed relatives and friends further out on the reservation who do not have access to water or fresh fruit and vegetables.

Fukushima Much Bigger Than Chernobyl

User Image

Japan’s nuclear disaster is “much bigger than Chernobyl” and could rewrite the international scale used to measure the severity of atomic accidents, a Russian expert said. “Chernobyl was a dirty bomb explosion. The next dirty bomb is Fukushima and it will cost much more” in economic and human terms, said Natalia Mironova, a thermodynamic engineer and anti-nuclear activist in Russia.

Chernobyl, which a 2005 report by UN bodies called “the most severe in the history of the nuclear power industry,” was ranked a seven on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES). Mironova said, “Chernobyl was level seven and it had only one reactor and lasted only two weeks. We have now have years from Fukushima and we have four reactors which we know are in very dangerous situations,” she warned. Environmental groups such as Greenpeace say up to 100,000 people could die.

UFOs have a way of showing up before, during and after natural disasters. This recent earthquake of 2011 has seen an increase in UFO activity just prior to the disaster with many seen during and after Fukushima in Japan.

Two globes the size of beach balls, one black and the other fuzzy white, both opaque with short tails, were seen by a helicopter exiting the 20 foot wave onto the beach in Japan. See Videos of tsunami on YouTube.com/ Japan.

Japan’s Nuclear Plants Dumps Radioactive Water into Sea

Contaminated water pouring out of the Fukushima nuclear plant has raised concerns about the safety of seafood prompting the government to set limits for the first time on the amount of radiation permitted in fish. The company that owns the plant, Tokyo Electric Power Co., said that the leak of highly radioactive water had been stopped.

According to the Agence France –Presse TEMPCO was pumping 300 tons of groundwater for treatment before pumping into storage. It is tested for radiation and then pumped into the Pacific Ocean. The company has frequently been criticized for dumping large amounts of radioactive water into the sea.

The leak had lessened after the company began pouring liquid glass into gravel below the concrete pit that had been the source of the leak. Radiation is some 5 million times the legal limits. The Japanese built 40 percent of their coast with seawalls that were only 33 feet high. When the 9.0 quake hit and the Tsunami went over the seawalls the diesel-powered generators and water pumps on the ground floors of the nuclear power plants stopped. The temperature rose to 2200 degrees F that led to explosions and fire in the reactors. Workers the real heroes fighting the catastrophe tried to contain the overheating, fires, possible meltdowns and radioactivity. Five years later the radiation continues to flow into the Pacific Ocean causing the death of many types of sea life and danger to you if you eat the fish.

Celene Pascal of American University did a study of the content of 2100 articles and editorials published in the New York Times, Washington Post, Politico and Huffington Post. Pascal found only 6 % referred to the risk to the general public. This is a significant finding for the focus of the news media during the largest nuclear disaster in history does not protect the public.

Treated carbon pulls radioactive elements from water
Researchers have developed unique sorbents, target Fukushima accident site

Researchers at Rice University and Kazan Federal University in Russia have found a way to extract radioactivity from water and said their discovery could help purify the hundreds of millions of gallons of contaminated water stored after the Fukushima nuclear plant accident.

They reported that their oxidatively modified carbon (OMC) material is inexpensive and highly efficient at absorbing radioactive metal cations, including cesium and strontium, toxic elements released into the environment when the Fukushima plant melted down after an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

OMC can easily trap common radioactive elements found in water floods from oil extraction, such as uranium, thorium and radium, said Rice chemist James Tour, who led the project with Ayrat Dimiev, a former postdoctoral researcher in his lab and now a research professor at Kazan Federal University.

The material makes good use of the porous nature of two specific sources of carbon, Tour said. One is an inexpensive, coke-derived powder known as C-seal F, used by the oil industry as an additive to drilling fluids. The other is a naturally occurring, carbon-heavy mineral called shungite found mainly in Russia.

The results appear this month in Carbon.

Tour and researchers at Lomonosov Moscow State University had already demonstrated a method to remove radionuclides from water using graphene oxide as a sorbent, as reported in Solvent Extraction and Ion Exchange late last year, but the new research suggests OMC is easier and far less expensive to process.

Treating the carbon particles with oxidizing chemicals increased their surface areas and "decorated" them with the oxygen molecules needed to adsorb the toxic metals. The particles were between 10 and 80 microns wide.

While graphene oxide excelled at removing strontium, Tour said, the two types of OMC were better at extracting cesium, which he said has been the hardest element to remove from water stored at Fukushima. The OMC was also much easier and less expensive to synthesize and to use in a standard filtration system, he said.

"We know we can use graphene oxide to trap the light radioactive elements of relevance to the Fukushima cleanup, namely cesium and strontium," Tour said. "But in the second study, we learned we can move from graphene oxide, which remains more expensive and harder to make, to really cheap oxidized coke and related carbons to trap these elements."

While other materials used for remediation of radioactive waste need to be stored with the waste they capture, carbon presents a distinct advantage, he said. "Carbon that has captured the elements can be burned in a nuclear incinerator, leaving only a very small amount of radioactive ash that's much easier to store," Tour said.

"Just passing contaminated water through OMC filters will extract the radioactive elements and permit safe discharge to the ocean," he said. "This could be a major advance for the cleanup effort at Fukushima."

The two flavors of OMC particles -- one from coke-derived carbon and the other from shungite -- look like balls of crumpled paper, or roses with highly irregular petals. The researchers tested them by mixing the sorbents with contaminated water as well as through column filtration, a standard process in which fluid is pumped or pulled by gravity through a filter to remove contaminants.

In the mixing test, the labs dispersed nonradioactive isotopes of strontium and cesium in spring water, added OMC and stirred for two hours. After filtering out the sorbent, they measured the particles left in the water.

OMC1 (from coke) proved best at removing both cesium and strontium from contaminated water, getting significantly better as the sorbent was increased. A maximum 800 milligrams of OMC1 removed about 83 percent of cesium and 68 percent of strontium from 100 milliliters of water, they reported.

OMC2 (from shungite) in the same concentrations adsorbed 70 percent of cesium and 47 percent of strontium.

The researchers were surprised to see that plain shungite particles extracted almost as much cesium as its oxidized counterpart. "Interestingly, plain shungite was used by local people for water purification from ancient times," Dimiev said. "But we have increased its efficiency many times, as well as revealed the factors behind its effectiveness."
User Image
In column filtration tests, which involved flowing 1,400 milliliters of contaminated water through an OMC filter in 100-milliliter amounts, the filter removed nearly 93 percent of cesium and 92 percent of strontium in a single pass. The researchers were able to contain and isolate contaminants trapped in the filter material.

Crane falls on Takahama plant building housing spent nuclear fuel

Fukui, Japan, Jan. 21, Kyodo

A crane collapsed Friday night at the Takahama power station in Fukui Prefecture, western Japan, damaging a building housing spent nuclear fuel, the plant operator said Saturday.

No one was injured in the accident, which occurred around 9:50 p.m. near the plant's No. 2 reactor building, and although the roof of the adjacent building was damaged, nothing fell into the spent nuclear fuel pool below it, according to the operator, Kansai Electric Power Co.

The crane also damaged the roof of another building nearby. A wind warning was in effect in the area, and strong winds were blowing at that time, according to the utility.

Environment Pollution in USA

January 31 2017 11:24 AM (UTC).

A major plutonium plant at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state has been put on pause after radioactive contamination spread outside the facility. A radiation monitor alarm sounded Friday while crews were working to contain radioactive contamination on a waste pile. The contamination was found where workers planned to contain it during the demolition.
Radiological surveys identified low levels of contamination on workers' protective clothing but no contamination on the clothing they wore underneath or on their skin. Nasal smears also found no evidence of inhaled contamination.
Project contractor CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation says the company is investigating how the contamination spread and will take steps to reduce the risk of another incident. Demolition is expected to resume next week.

Dulce, New Mexico is not about aliens…..it’s about humans and a lingering problem that has been kept from the public

July 10, 2016 CIVILIAN INTELLIGENCE NEWS SERVICE

WATCH THE FOLLOWING SHORT VIDEO:

Underground nuclear explosion near Dulce, New Mexico in 1967:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GJwjxWUnRk

Although this 1967 experiment was intended to ease the flow of natural gas in the surrounding areas, the after-effect of this test was not all positive: Radiation slowly began to leak in the surrounding areas.

Dulce, New Mexico is not about aliens. It is about humans and the lingering health problems that have been kept from the public.

It’s about the likelihood that the government conducted tests on radiation by selectively choosing particular cows in the Dulce area, beginning in the mid 1970s. This type of research may have involved analyses of certain organs and tissues and may also have involved clandestine operations utilizing some prototypes of unmanned aerial vehicles or even unmarked helicopters.

But more important than that, there is a lingering problem that must be dealt with, i.e., the lingering physical effect on Native Americans from that 1967 experiment, as one can see from the high rate of cancer as well as problems with infertility among women in the Dulce area. This type of condition may continue through the next generation of residents that were affected.

This issue must come out in the open.

From a Jicarilla Apache member: "Hello. I am a member of The Jicarilla Apache Nation. My father passed from a brain tumor in 06. My Mother was just diagnosed on 1-13-17 with a brain tumor. I honestly believe there are no coincidences here. The radiation lingering effects are making my people sick with cancer. I myself can't have any children. Please help. I have contacted several attorney's who are Native American and specialize in Federal Indian Law. No replies yet."

Although not directly related to Project Gasbuggy, here is a significant report about Native Americans still suffering from after-effects of radiation:

EXCELLENT FIND SWAMP!!!

Record high fatal radiation levels, hole in reactor detected at crippled Fukushima nuclear facility

https://www.rt.com/news/376107-fukushima-record-radiation-level/

Record high radiation levels that’s lethal even after brief exposure have been detected at a damaged reactor at the Fukushima power plant in Japan. Specialists also found a hole, likely caused by melted nuclear fuel.

User Image

Radiation levels of up to 530 Sieverts per hour were detected inside an inactive Reactor 2 at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex damaged during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami catastrophe, Japanese media reported on Thursday citing the plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO).

A hole of no less than one square meter in size has also been discovered beneath the reactor's pressure vessel, TEPCO said. According to researchers, the apparent opening in the metal grating of one of three reactors that had melted down in 2011, is believed to be have been caused by melted nuclear fuel that fell through the vessel.

A dose of about 8 Sieverts is considered incurable and fatal.
