Scientists Shocked As Fisheries Collapse On West Coast: "It's The Worst We've Seen"

The Gulf of Alaska cod populations appears to have taken a nose-dive. Scientists are shocked at the collapse and starving fish, making this the “worst they’ve ever seen.”

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-11-13/scientists-shocked-fisheries-collapse-west-coast-its-worst-weve-seen

The 2017 trawl net survey found the lowest numbers of cod on record forcing scientists to try to unravel what happened. A lot of the cod hatched in 2012 appeared to survive, but by 2017, those fish were largely gone for the surveys, which also found scant evidence of fish born in subsequent years. Many of the cod that have come on board trawlers are “long skinny fish” according to Brent Paine, executive director of United Catcher Boats.

“This is a big deal,” Paine said. “We just don’t see these (cod) year classes disappear from one year to the next.”

The decline is expected to substantially reduce the gulf cod harvests that in recent years have been worth — before processing — more than $50 million to Northwest and Alaska fishermen who catch them with nets, pot traps, and baited hooks set along the sea bottom.

Radioactive cloud over Europe may have come from nuclear accident in Russia or Kazakhstan

A cloud of radioactive pollution over Europe in recent weeks indicates that an accident has happened in a nuclear facility in Russia or Kazakhstan in the last week of September, French nuclear safety institute IRSN said on Thursday.

The IRSN ruled out an accident in a nuclear reactor, saying it was likely to be in a nuclear fuel treatment site or centre for radioactive medicine. There has been no impact on human health or the environment in Europe, the IRSN said.

IRSN, the technical arm of French nuclear regulator ASN, said in a statement it could not pinpoint the location of the release of radioactive material but that based on weather patterns, the most plausible zone lay south of the Ural mountains, between the Urals and the Volga river.

This could indicate Russia or possibly Kazakhstan, an IRSN official said.

Situation Update No. 7 on November 30 2017 04:59 AM (UTC)

After an extremely high content of radioactive substances, which was nearly 1,000 times above the usual radioactive pollution level, was registered in the Russian Chelyabinsk region in September, Lithuania sent a note to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reports LETA/BNS. "We have drafted and sent a note to IAEA over the incident, calling for scrutiny of all circumstances and ensure (compliance to) the 1986 Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident," Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas told BNS. Vaiciunas said he asked earlier this week for the European Commission's (EC) support on the matter. "I was clearly assured that immediate steps would be taken shortly to establish the IAEA procedures to ensure everything in IAEA. The European Commission would double-check. I believe we will have the results shortly," said the energy minister. During one of Europe's biggest wind energy conferences in Amsterdam on Tuesday, Vaiciunas met with EC Deputy President for Energy Gerassimos Thomas. "I expressed my huge astonishment over the process that occurred - the leak of ruthenium (ruthenium-106 isotope). The fact occurred in late September and was only established two months later. There are certain instruments and international conventions for this. I raised the question about why the instruments don't work and stated my clear position that we cannot trust the development of nuclear energy in Belarus, regardless of its technological credibility," said the energy minister. Russia's meteorological service confirmed at the end of November that the extremely high concentration of ruthenium-106 had been recorded in the country's few regions close to the station in Argayash village in the Chelyabinsk region in southern Ural, exceeding the usual level by a factor of 986. The figures were established close to the nuclear company Majak. Russia disclosed the information only after France's radiation safety and nuclear safety institute (IRSN) announced on Nov. 9 that the samples of air taken on Sept. 27 through Oct. 13 contained the radioactive isotope, ruthenium-106. Ruthenium-106 forms in a nuclear reactor during atom splitting, it does not exist naturally. It is also used in medical equipment used for radiation therapy. Lithuania's officials say the incident heightens Lithuania's fears over the Astravyets nuclear power plant under construction in Belarus by Russia's Rosatom concern.

Environment Pollution in India on December 06 2017 04:27 AM (UTC).

Wind speed dropped by 40 per cent leading to drop in visibility as thin smog engulfed the city on Tuesday morning. The overall air quality in Delhi stayed "very poor" but near severe. Several monitoring stations like Anand Vihar showed "severe" air quality. The Central Pollution Control Board observed that Delhi's average air quality index was 386 on Tuesday which is very near to the "severe" category which is 400.

The haze did not disrupt the proceedings of the ongoing test match between India and Sri Lanka at the Feroz Shah Kotla, however, the Lankans wore N95 anti-pollution masks while fielding. One of the players even threw up a couple of times.

The concentration of NO2 breached the 24-hour safe limit of 80 micrograms per cubic metre (ug/m3) in areas like Dilshad Garden, ITO, Mandir Marg, Anand Vihar and RK Puram. "The wind speed has gone down by 40 per cent and the absence of proper sunlight is causing, the smog," said Anumita Roychowdhuri of Center for Science and Environment.

We took the internationally recognised standard, endorsed by every nuclear regulatory authority in the world, that 1 Sievert of radiation over a year increases the likelihood of developing cancer sometime in your lifetime by 5% (note: NOT that 5% of people WILL get cancer, but that everyone has the chance of developing cancer increased by 5% - some will, most won't.)

PLOS, Nov 14, 2017 (emphasis added): Radioactive contamination in the Tokyo metropolitan area in the early stage of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident and its fluctuation over five years

The activity and inventory of radioactive material in the eastern part of Tokyo tended to be high… The radioactive plume with high 131I activity spread into the Tokyo metropolitan area…
Almost no public information about the radioactive contamination in the Tokyo metropolitan area and Kanto district had been shared…
The plume containing a large amount of radioactive material drifted into the Tokyo metropolitan area… where over 30 million residents live… [Publications] include almost no discussion of the fact that radioactive materials were carried into the Tokyo metropolitan area…
The contamination level was extremely high in a roadside ditch sludge in Kashiwa City…
The quantity of 134+137Cs deposited in the region studied was estimated… from values measured in the soil, it was estimated as 5.35 TBq…
High activities and inventories of the radionuclides were found in eastern Tokyo and northern Chiba… The contamination was even higher in the adjoining northern part of Chiba located east of Tokyo…
The results reveal that the Tokyo metropolitan area even now continues to be affected by radioactive contamination caused by the FDNPP accident…

ZETAR,

..San Onofre Nuclear Atrocity Coming - Edison To Bury

Edison To Dump 3.6 Million Lbs Of Nuclear Waste UNDER..

So which is it ?

Tons or Pounds which would make it 1607.142 ton (Imperial). Sounds more reasonable.

I would suggest pounds.

Hanford

Situation Update No. 1 on December 19 2017 07:51 AM (UTC)

Demolition is stopped at the Hanford nuclear reservation's Plutonium Finishing Plant after another spread of radioactive contamination. Some workers in portable offices at the plant, which are well away from the plant's demolition zone, were told to remain in their office trailers until areas nearby were surveyed for radioactive contamination Monday afternoon. Some of the contamination was found on workers' cars or pickups. At about 4 p.m., workers were in the process of being released from the offices as radiation surveys determined that there was a clean route for them to exit the administrative area without tracking and spreading contamination that might be on the ground. The contamination may be from the final demolition work Friday on the plant's most contaminated area, the Plutonium Reclamation Facility, said Ty Blackford, president of CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co., in a message to employees. The last of the reclamation facility was torn down Friday as part of demolition work that started 13 months ago. The reclamation facility was believed to be the most contaminated area of the plant. Hanford officials have called the plutonium and other radioactive particles there "flighty" because they can become airborne easily. Since Friday's open air demolition using heavy equipment, small amounts of contamination have been found on a jersey barrier, a vehicle hood, the ground and a trash can near the Plutonium Finishing Plant's office trailer, according to Hanford officials. The specks of contamination on two workers' vehicles parked at the plant were discovered Monday. It is unknown if the vehicles were contaminated Monday or if they had been contaminated as long ago as Friday, driven home and then driven back to work. "The interiors of both vehicles were surveyed, and no contamination was detected inside either vehicle," Blackford said in a memo to employees late afternoon Monday. "Additional surveying is being considered." Work at the Plutonium Finishing Plant had been stopped Wednesday and Thursday with about a half day's demolition left on the reclamation facility. CH2M officials and union leaders were concerned about laboratory results for lapel air monitors worn by several plant workers who were south of the demolition area. They showed that workers possibly could have inhaled low levels of airborne radioactive contamination on recent days. Testing of workers for contamination within their bodies is continuing. The demolition zone was expanded before last week's stop work order was lifted. When demolition work resumed Friday, the southern boundary of the demolition zone had been expanded and workers there were required to were respirators. Routine radiological surveying was done after demolition work wrapped up Friday on the reclamation facility. Surveyors found specks of contamination to the east of the reclamation facility and what remains of the main processing area of the Plutonium Finishing Plant. A stop work order was issued by CH2M officials Sunday. Employees returned to work at the plant after the weekend Monday, but no demolition work was done. Surveys had shown the area near the offices to be clean, but more specks of contamination were found there Monday, which was a breezy day, during follow-up surveying. A critique was held Monday to discuss the contamination spread, its possible causes and the path forward, Blackford told employees. No emergency was declared. A spread of radioactive material also occurred in June. "Friday's contamination spread was smaller and at lower levels than the contamination spread in June," Blackford said. In June, as demolition was being done on the plant's reclamation facility, small spots of low-level radioactive contamination were found outside the area marked for radiological control near the demolition. An airborne radiation alarm also sounded and workers were ordered to take cover as a precaution. In August, Washington Department of Health laboratory results came back for air samples collected the same day as the June contamination spread. Samples collected at least three miles from the plant had radioactive contamination at such low levels that it was not considered a health risk. The only activities allowed under the current stop work order at the Plutonium Finishing Plant are stabilization of debris from the demolition of the reclamation facility to make sure rubble piles are safe and surveying for radioactive contamination spread. "As I said last week, PFP has and will continue to challenge us," Blackford told employees. "We will work through this and learn from it." Before the most recent stop work order, Blackford had within a few weeks the remainder of the Plutonium Finishing Plant could be demolished down to its foundation.

Situation Update No. 2 on December 28 2017 06:42 AM (UTC)

The number of vehicles contaminated with specks of radioactive material at Hanford's Plutonium Finishing Plant has jumped to 19 as checks continue. As of about 2 p.m. Wednesday, 12 government or contractor vehicles had been found with radioactive contamination, with 55 of 86 vehicles still to be surveyed. The number increased from seven contaminated government and contractor vehicles discovered before the Christmas weekend. The dozen government and contractor vehicles are in addition to seven worker cars or pickups found to have specks of contamination since demolition was completed Dec. 15 on the most contaminated section of the plant, the Plutonium Reclamation Facility. Post-demolition surveying found specks of radioactive material, some too small to see, had spread outside the demolition zone set up to control the spread of radioactive contamination. The highly contaminated plant has been cleaned out, but demolition with heavy equipment is still high-hazard work. Contamination that can easily become airborne remains after 40 years of work to process plutonium produced at Hanford into hockey-puck sized "buttons" and plutonium oxide powder to be shipped to the nation's nuclear weapons production facilities. The last of the seven contaminated worker vehicles was decontaminated and returned to its owner Wednesday, according to the Department of Energy. Checks for more radioactive contamination that may have spread have continued, with none found since last week. However, the three to five inches of snow in recent days has interrupted some work. Hanford officials called a halt to some checks for radioactive contamination in some areas while there is snow. Workers must wear protective gear in areas where contamination is most likely, which limits traction and puts them at risk of slips and falls, according to DOE. Additional layers of fixative are being applied to areas where contamination has been found, as the weather allows, to keep it from becoming airborne. Workers are preparing to haul clean dirt to the plant to also cover areas of contamination, including areas around the shift office, a portable trailer office that sees heavy foot traffic at the site.

Fukushima Darkness: Radiation of Triple Meltdowns Felt Worldwide

https://www.globalresearch.ca/fukushima-darkness-radiation-effects-of-fukushima-daiichi-triple-meltdowns-felt-worldwide/5625847

It’s been six years since the triple 100% nuke meltdowns occurred at Fukushima Daiichi d/d March 11th, 2011, nowadays referred to as “311”. Over time, it’s easy for the world at large to lose track of the serious implications of the world’s largest-ever industrial disaster; out of sight out of mind works that way.

According to Japanese government and TEPCO (Tokyo Electric Power Company) estimates, decommissioning is a decade-by-decade work-in-progress, most likely four decades at a cost of up to ¥21 trillion ($189B). However, that’s the simple part to understanding the Fukushima nuclear disaster story. The difficult painful part is largely hidden from pubic view via a highly restrictive harsh national secrecy law (Act on the Protection of Specially Designated Secrets, Act No. 108/2013), political pressure galore, and fear of exposing the truth about the inherent dangers of nuclear reactor meltdowns. Powerful vested interests want it concealed.

Following passage of the 2013 government secrecy act, which says that civil servants or others who “leak secrets” will face up to 10 years in prison, and those who “instigate leaks,” especially journalists, will be subject to a prison term of up to 5 years, Japan fell below Serbia and Botswana in the Reporters Without Borders 2014 World Press Freedom Index. The secrecy act, sharply criticized by the Japanese Federation of Bar Associations, is a shameless act of buttoned-up totalitarianism at the very moment when citizens need and in fact require transparency.

User Image

The current status, according to Mr. Okamura, a TEPCO manager, as of November 2017:

“We’re struggling with four problems: (1) reducing the radiation at the site (2) stopping the influx of groundwater (3) retrieving the spent fuel rods and (4) removing the molten nuclear fuel.” (Source: Martin Fritz, The Illusion of Normality at Fukushima, Deutsche Welle–Asia, Nov. 3, 2017)

User Image

In short, nothing much has changed in nearly seven years at the plant facilities, even though tens of thousands of workers have combed the Fukushima countryside, washing down structures, removing topsoil and storing it in large black plastic bags, which end-to-end would extend from Tokyo to Denver and back.

Can't think where to put this one. But here we are.

So Hawaii is awoken to the shrill of an incoming missile warning.

38 minutes later it is cancelled.. someone pressed the wrong button.

My question is, what was the US military response ?

Look at it this way.

If a Russian ICBM was launched the UK got four minutes warning.
The USA got about 20 minutes for the same launch.

So why did it take 38 minutes to tell the Hawaiians that it was a false alarm ?

Were we in the same situation where only the cool head of a Russian officer prevented retaliatory launch of a countermeasure.

And how long before the screen watchers realised it wasn't real.

ZETAR,

YOU WOULD APPROVE OF 1800 TONS OF "Deadly Nuke Waste"... ADJACENT TO YOUR ENCLAVE/CAVE?..

I live in a cave where the female cave dwellers smoke quite heavily. So I would probably be at more risk personally from that.

This stuff needs to be sealed up but accessible;e as someone is bound to find a use for it some day. Would be a shame to place it out of reach.

We need more nuclear physicists to work on these problems.
