"A Factory of Warming at the Top of the World"

"As Mercury Rises, So Do Trapped Gases" - NYT's NATIONAL - Thursday, August 24, 2017

"The Arctic is warming about twice as fast as other parts of the planet, and even here in sub-Arctic Alaska the rate of warming is high. Sea ice and wildlife habitat are disappearing; higher sea-levels threaten coastal villages.

Starting just a few feet below surface and extending tens or even hundreds of feet down, it contains vast amounts of carbon in organic matter --- plants that took carbon dioxide from the atmosphere centuries ago, died and froze before they could decompose. Worldwide, permafrost is though to contain about twice as much carbon as is currently in our atmosphere.

Once this ancient organic material thaws, microbes convert some of it to carbon dioxide and methane, which can flow into the atmosphere and cause more warming.

Scientists have estimated that the process of permafrost thawing could contribute as much as 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit to global warming over the next several centuries, independent of what society does to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels and other activities.

ERNO,

DO YOU HAVE A LINK FOR THE ABOVE?

"The age of the Earth is approximately 4.54 0.05 billion years (4.54 109 years 1%).[1][2][3][4] This dating is based on evidence from radiometric age-dating of meteorite[5] material and is consistent with the radiometric ages of the oldest-known terrestrial and lunar samples."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_the_Earth

OUT OF 4.54 BILLIONS YEARS AND CHANGE...HOW MANY TIMES WOULD YOU ESTIMATE SUCH "microbes convert some of it to carbon dioxide and methane, which can flow into the atmosphere and cause more warming." HAVE OCCURED...OR DO YOU CONSIDER THIS A ONE OFF EVENT?

SHALOM...Z

I'm not quite sure...but this thawing of the permafrost might be a first time event for this region.

Here ya go: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/08/23/climate/alaska-permafrost-thawing.html
