Tommi,

I asked you what the actual Satanic Verses were.

And you don't know.

They were children's nursery rhymes.

Look, I don't mind you expressing your opinions of me. But I hold one thing to be true.

If you haven't read the original document then you can't form a judgement. Your opinion may be mistaken, but it will be your own.

I read all this stuff back in the eighties. It's old hat.

All religions lead people by the nose. It has always been that way. Why do you think the early Bibles were in Latin ?

Because the 'common people' couldn't read them. Only the educated could.

Cast aside religion, Tommi. It will only bring you grief.

The point about Satanic Verses is that people were prepared to support the killing of an author but actually they hadn't read the book.

2016 - Salman Rushdie: Iranian state media renew fatwa on Satanic Verses author with $600,000 bounty
The announcement coincides with the anniversary of the fatwa issued in 1989

Yeah.. I'm sure nobody in Iran has read the book. But it is not the book's contents only, the book's title is sufficient as an insult to Islam. This is what you don't seem to get.

Quote:
It doesn't matter if your assessment is correct or not if it is formed by second hand views.

You need to actually read these things to be able to form an opinion.

No, that is a fallacy. It is ridiculous that you say that the Koran, (which relies on 2nd hand views for interpretation, it is so obtuse) needs to be read.

I'll tell you what.. You read the Koran and get back to me and tell me what I'm missing.. that 30 year scholars haven't helped me understand yet..

Meanwhile answer this question please:

What do you think you are actually going to learn of spiritual or intellectual value by "reading the Koran"?

OMG are you that incredibly thick? In the flipping book they were a nursery rhyme. But in REAL LIFE it is something else and the Iranian's found his use of that title to be sufficiently insulting enough, let alone the metaphorical subplot.

For crying out loud.. give it up Hal. Go read the Koran.
Then you can enlighten me.

See all the Iranian's think about it, is

The Satanic Verses never happened.

Don't bring up the Satanic Verses or you insult the Prophet

If you mention and make a book called the Satanic Verses, you are mentioning something we can kill you over.

This is the forest Hal.

They kill people over cartoons as well or haven't you realized that either..

rolleyes

And how is reading the Koran or the Satanic Verses going to change that reality?

rolleyes

Since you seem to gloss over the global and historical consequences of this religion called Islam..

I ask you once again, but you say you read it in the 80's and it's "old hat".. ok then..

What did you actually learn of spiritual or intellectual value by "reading the Koran"?

Still waiting for an answer Hal.

I could post video after video of children learning the Koran, as young boys are required to do.

The custom is to beat them while they are trying to memorize it. Would you like to see about 20 or more videos of young boys being beaten, some have been beaten to death.

Would you like one video of how children, young boys, are taught to "learn the Koran"?

Did you know this is a common practice and not condemned in the Islamic community?

So again I ask you Hal..

What do you think you are actually going to learn of spiritual or intellectual value by "reading the Koran"?

...Still waiting for an answer Hal....

Sorry, I was away doing other things. You know, feeding my ferrets and darning a hole in flat cap; that kind of thing.

What did I learn...

That a psychopathic pedophile can do a lot of damage if he can get enough people to believe him.

And nothing else of value.

No one needs 'holy men' telling them what to think. Particularly when it involves doing harm to others.

Just be your own person. Do no harm to others and hope they will do non to you. It's that easy.

And will you go to an afterlife ? Who knows. You will find out when you die; or you wont.

If you don't then it's likely to be 'THE END'. Total void. oblivion. You won't feel a thing.

Re reading your last.

what did I expect you to learn by reading the Koran?

Nothing. I only expected you to be able to have read the book you are on about.

And the beating etc is what we call 'indoctrination' .

They are being forced into memorizing large chunks of the book.

Not just being asked to read it.

But you knew that ?

So.. basically you are thinking you are going to get away with bashing me for wisely deciding my time would be better off spent not reading the Koran and learning about it instead from others who are deeply studied in it and yet you are also admitting that you expected to learn nothing from it yourself?

Are you serious? No.. you are just taking the p*ss. For whatever reason that is everything to do with you and not my relating what I've learned.

In fact, it appears I've learned a lot more than you have, and I haven't read the flipping book. Imagine that.. tongue

.... Would you like to see about 20 or more videos of young boys being beaten, some have been beaten to death...

Maybe the real question is...

why do YOU need to view so many videos of children being tortured ?

wouldn't one have been enough ? maybe even one to many.

By the way, that isn't a rhetorical question.

I always was an atheist. so maybe I'm ahead of the game.

.... and yet you are also admitting that you expected to learn nothing from it yourself?...

sorry, you can't play that game with me and expect it to be brushed over.

I said, in answer to your question, that I had learned nothing of value from reading it.

Note that this was a conclusion I came to after I read it and pondered on it's implications.

You are implying that I read it with preconceived ideas. With a fore knowledge that I would learn nothing from it. and this is not the case.

Remember, I am the one here who has read the book.

This whole boring and trite discussion between us Hal, reminds me of when all this Islamic tension with ISIS started to explode..

And Lousie Mensch.. I'm sure you know who she is;

But on Twitter she is known as the Menshatron because she tweets endlessly about subjects she gets herself stuck into and this time it was Islam for a brief period..

She had in Arabic writing under her header on Twitter "there shall be no compulsion in religion"

And explained to everyone on twitter how she had read the Koran at Oxford..

I thought to myself.. yeah Louise, you were so drugged out of it while at Oxford you were carrying it around to look cool.. but don't tell me you read it and comprehended it.

That kind of BS didn't go over on twitter very well, because scholars with PHD's and people like Douglas Murray who have studied Islam and the Koran pointed out to her the fallacy of her smugness.

She obviously didn't learn that the verse she quoted had been abrogated by verses much later in the Koran when Mohammid was in Medina. It was a verse that had become nullified early in Mohammid's career of religion building.

Ok.. so that's how people who think they are smarter than anyone else with this subject, miss the forest totally..

By the way, what do you think about the POTUS blocking out selected news reporters and stations.

Guess he can say goodbye to his cream tea with the Queen.

I watched one only this year and that was enough, but when I googled boys learning the Koran being beaten, to make my point to you, and endless array of videos came up I decided just to point out that there are loads of them out there to you.

So....... you assume that I spend my time watching children being beaten up and you are also the guy who thinks that the reason Rusdie got his fatwa was because nobody in Iran read the book..

And you are the guy who smugly likes to say because he wasted his time reading the ravings of lunatic that I'm somehow wrong because I knew better than to waste my time..

I think Hal.. you are picking on me because you can't stomach the way the world really is... that is what I'm thinking.

You are seeing the coming clash of civilisations and want to find some way for reason to prevail through it.
