Love Trump? Despise Trump? Either way, you need to study this article. The times, they are a'changin. What's true? What's not true?

UW professor: The information war is real, and we’re losing it

A University of Washington professor started studying social networks to help people respond to disasters. But she got dragged down a rabbit hole of twitter-boosted conspiracy theories, and ended up mapping our political moment.

It started with the Boston marathon bombing, four years ago. University of Washington professor Kate Starbird was sifting through thousands of tweets sent in the aftermath and noticed something strange.

Too strange for a university professor to take seriously.

“THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT VOLUME OF SOCIAL-MEDIA TRAFFIC THAT BLAMED THE NAVY SEALS FOR THE BOMBING,” Starbird told me the other day in her office. “It was real tinfoil-hat stuff. So we ignored it.”

Same thing after the mass shooting that killed nine at Umpqua Community College in Oregon: a burst of social-media activity calling the massacre a fake, a stage play by “crisis actors” for political purposes.

“After every mass shooting, dozens of them, there would be these strange clusters of activity,” Starbird says. “It was so fringe we kind of laughed at it.

“That was a terrible mistake. We should have been studying it.”

Starbird is in the field of “crisis informatics,” or how information flows after a disaster. She got into it to see how social media might be used for the public good, such as to aid emergency responders.

Instead SHE’S GONE DOWN A DARK RABBIT HOLE, ONE THAT WENDS THROUGH THE BACK WARRENS OF THE WEB AND ALL THE WAY UP TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

Starbird argues in a new paper, set to be presented at a computational social-science conference in May, that THESE “STRANGE CLUSTERS” OF WILD CONSPIRACY TALK, WHEN MAPPED, POINT TO AN EMERGING ALTERNATIVE MEDIA ECOSYSTEM ON THE WEB OF SURPRISING POWER AND REACH.

IT FEATURES SITES SUCH AS INFOWARS.COM, HOSTED BY INFORMAL PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP ADVISER ALEX JONES, WHICH HAS PUSHED A RANGE OF CONSPIRACIES, INCLUDING THAT THE SANDY HOOK SCHOOL SHOOTING WAS A STAGED FAKE.

There are dozens of other conspiracy-propagating websites such as beforeitsnews.com, nodisinfo.com and veteranstoday.com. Starbird cataloged 81 of them, linked through a huge community of interest connected by shared followers on Twitter, with many of the tweets replicated by automated bots.

Infowars.com alone is roughly equivalent in visitors and page views to the Chicago Tribune
, according to Alexa.com, the web-traffic analysis firm.

“More people are dipping into this stuff than I ever imagined,” Starbird says.

STARBIRD IS IN THE UW’S DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN & ENGINEERING — THE STUDY OF THE WAYS PEOPLE AND TECHNOLOGY INTERACT. HER TEAM ANALYZED 58 MILLION TWEETS SENT AFTER MASS SHOOTINGS DURING A 10-MONTH PERIOD. THEY SEARCHED FOR TERMS SUCH AS “FALSE FLAG” AND “CRISIS ACTOR,” WEB SLANG MEANING A SHOOTING IS NOT WHAT THE GOVERNMENT OR THE TRADITIONAL MEDIA IS REPORTING IT TO BE.

It happens after every mass shooting or attack. If you search for “false flag” and “Westminster,” you’ll find thousands of results theorizing that last week’s attack outside British Parliament was staged (presumably to bring down Brexit, which makes no sense, but making sense is not a prerequisite).

Starbird’s insight was to map the digital connections between all this buzzing on Twitter with a conglomeration of websites. Then she analyzed the content of each site to try to answer the question: Just what is this alternative media ecosystem saying?

It isn’t a traditional left-right political axis, she found. There are right-wing sites like Danger & Play and left-wing sensationalizers such as The Free Thought Project. Some appear to be just trying to make money, while others are aggressively pushing political agendas.

THE TRUE COMMON DENOMINATOR, SHE FOUND, IS ANTI-GLOBALISM — DEEP SUSPICION OF FREE TRADE, MULTINATIONAL BUSINESS AND GLOBAL INSTITUTIONS.

“TO BE ANTIGLOBALIST OFTEN INCLUDED BEING ANTI-MAINSTREAM MEDIA, ANTI-IMMIGRATION, ANTI-SCIENCE, ANTI-U.S. GOVERNMENT, AND ANTI-EUROPEAN UNION,” Starbird says.

So it was like the mind of Stephen Bannon, chief adviser to Trump, spilled across the back channels of the web.

MUCH OF IT WAS STRANGELY PRO-RUSSIAN, TOO — PERHAPS DUE TO RUSSIAN TWITTER BOTS THAT BOMBARDED SOCIAL CHANNELS DURING THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN (A PHENOMENON THAT’S NOW PART OF THE FBI INVESTIGATION INTO THE ELECTION, McClatchy reported last week).

The mainstream press periodically waded into this swamp, but it only backfired. Its occasional fact checks got circulated as further evidence: "If the media is trying to debunk it, then the conspiracy must be true."

Starbird is publishing her paper as a sort of warning. THE INFORMATION NETWORKS WE’VE BUILT ARE ALMOST PERFECTLY DESIGNED TO EXPLOIT PSYCHOLOGICAL VULNERABILITIES TO RUMOR.

“Your brain tells you ‘Hey, I got this from three different sources,’ ” she says. “But YOU DON’T REALIZE IT ALL TRACES BACK TO THE SAME PLACE, AND MIGHT HAVE EVEN REACHED YOU VIA BOTS POSING AS REAL PEOPLE. If we think of this as a virus, I wouldn’t know how to vaccinate for it.”

STARBIRD SAYS SHE’S CONCLUDED, PROVOCATIVELY, THAT WE MAY BE HEADED TOWARD “THE MENACE OF UNREALITY — WHICH IS THAT NOBODY BELIEVES ANYTHING ANYMORE.” ALEX JONES, SHE SAYS, IS “A KIND OF PROPHET. THERE REALLY IS AN INFORMATION WAR FOR YOUR MIND. AND WE’RE LOSING IT.”

I sat dumbfounded for a time as she spooled through tweets in her database: an archive of endless, baseless speculation that nevertheless is evidence of a political revolution. It should be unnecessary to say, but real humans died in these shootings. How disgustingly cruel it is to the survivors to have the stories of those deaths altered and twisted for commercial or ideological ends.

Starbird sighed. “I used to be a techno-utopian. Now I can’t believe that I’m sitting here talking to you about all this.”

Breaking: FBI Uncovers Evidence That 62 Million Trump Voters are All Russian Agents

Yuri Silverbaum
New York Times
March 28, 2017

Anonymous sources within the FBI have revealed to The Times that they have new evidence indicating that everyone who voted for Donald Trump is an agent of the FSB (formerly the KGB). An unknown portion of these voters may have had their minds controlled by a Russian space-beam, agents close to the investigation say.

The allegation that 62 million Americans appear to be employed by Russian intelligence services has rocked the Bureau, and it is reported that multiple agents have taken their own lives, given that realizing just how deep this Russian hacking conspiracy runs blew their minds – literally.

This shocking new revelation comes after it was confirmed as a fact that Russia did Wikileaks because Donald Trump personally called Vladimir Putin and asked him to. It was also revealed earlier this week that Alex Jones (real name “Alexi Jonesinov”) is a Russian sleeper agent who was ordered by the FSB (formerly the KGB) to post news articles on the internet saying that Donald Trump would be a good President.

However, the revelation that 62 million Americans are taking orders directly from the Kremlin is a revelation of a whole other order, which FBI agents are struggling with how to deal with.

It was determined by Puerto Rican federal judge Mizu Tomazaki that it is a crime to support Donald Trump or to post positive things about him on the internet. 9th circuit judges Weinberg, Steinman and Goldenstein upheld the ruling. Despite this, the logistics of rounding up 62 million people and locking them in prison present a difficult task to overcome.

It may also be that not every voter is a direct agent of the FSB (formerly the KGB), and some may have been under the control of a mind control beam in space.

“We have not determined for sure that everyone who voted for Trump was paid directly by the Kremlin, given that it is highly possible that the Russians used a space-beam from a satellite to control their brains from a facility in St. Petersburg, and moved their bodies like puppets to the polls to check the Trump box,” one current agent familiar with the investigation told the times, describing the process of using a satellite-mounted space-beam to control people’s actions as “Russian neuro-brain hacking.”

This method was developed by the KGB, which became the FSB following the fall of the USSR.

What we know for a fact is that the only reason anyone would vote for Donald Trump is that they were being influenced, whether through cash payments, blackmail or space beams, by Russian agents from the FSB (formerly the KGB).

“If people were not beholden to Russia, they would have voted for Hillary Clinton,” a senior agent said, citing a definitive analysis by CrowdStrike, a contractor hired by the DNC to investigate Russian space-beam mind control.

When asked for comment on these reports by The Times, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the allegations of space-beam mind control by the FSB (formerly the KGB) were “ridiculous,” “outrageous” and “goofy.”

Senator Chuck Schumer called the response from Peskov “predictable,” adding, “what do you expect from the criminal Putinist regime that kills journalists, oppresses gays, invaded the Ukraine, murdered innocent Syrians and hacked our elections by controlling people’s brains with a space-beam?”

Upon hearing of the revelation of the fact that 62 million American voters are working directly for Russia, Senator John McCain has called for mass arrests. He referred to all Trump voters as “radical traitors to the core values and principles of democracy and human rights,” and demanded they be imprisoned and their homes given over to Syrian refugees.

Taking a softer stance, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan tilted his head, smiled and said he doesn’t know what’s going on.

NSA chief Mike Rogers said that though it is a well-established fact that going all the way back to Soviet times, the Russians have used space-beams to control people’s brains, he’s “never seen anything on this scale before.”

The Times also sought comment from President Trump; however, when asked about these allegations, he began screaming in Russian and jumped in a big truck and drove off down the road.

BUSTED: Here’s How Much Russia Gave To The Clinton Foundation…

March 26, 2017, The Truth Division

A Russian funded, Moscow-based technology organization has been discovered to have given tens of millions of dollars to the Clinton Foundation during then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s tenure, according to a bombshell new report.

As President Obama’s top diplomat, Clinton oversaw and facilitated the State Department’s failed five-year project to “reset” U.S.-Russia relations, which spurred the creation of Skolkovo, a research facility known as Russia’s version of Silicon Valley.

Yet 17 of the 28 American, European, and Russian companies that participated in the Skolkovo initiative were Clinton Foundation donors or sponsored speeches for former President Bill Clinton.

The amount of money given to the foundation from “key” Skolkovo partners ranges from $6.5 to $23.5 million, according to Clinton Foundation data. The foundation only discloses donations in ranges, making it difficult to track the exact amount.

John Chambers, the head of Cisco and member of the Skolkovo Foundation, for example, donated between $1 million to $5 million to the Clinton Foundation, according to the report. Intel Corporation–formerly headed by Craig Barrett, who served on the board of the Skolkovo Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative–has given between $250,000 and $500,000 to the Clinton foundation.

The FBI and U.S. Army determined that Skolkovo had transformed into a “dangerous pathway” for Russian technological espionage and boosted the military’s technological capabilities.

Many Skolkovo research projects used “dual-use” technologies, meaning the operations have both civilian and military uses, the report said.

Among Skolkovo’s technological innovations were Russian hypersonic cruise missile engines, radar surveillance equipment, and vehicles built to deliver airborne Russian troops, Schweizer wrote in the Wall Street Journal.

There is great irony in the fact that the Clinton’s collected millions from a Russian technology firm that could throw an election into chaos, yet blame President Trump for doing exactly what they did.
