Several months back we had a discussion on the number of people that go missing every year across the US and elsewhere.
Recently I have become aware of the "Missing 411" books and the interviews with the author on Coast to Coast.
These books are a collection of missing persons cases where the person went missing in very odd circumstances and when, and if, found would be in places and conditions that were far from expected or normal.
Has anyone followed these books? Or listened to the author's interviews?
They can be some thought provoking stories.
His interviews can be heard on Youtube with a search for Missing 411.

One should take David Paulide's stories with a healthy dose of skepticism. He has a track record of omitting key details which would explain the disappearances and inserting fabricated details.

Rusty West has a similar genre, focusing on Parks, forests, and other remote areas. Like Paulides, he often plays fast and loose with the truth.

Each year 305 million people visit our 154 federal parks.

Sadly, 160 people die or go missing each year.

160 out of 305 million.

Statistically, you are at greater risk on the highway driving TO the Park than wandering the backcountry IN the Park.

I spent my entire career in the woods. Often off-trail and solo in remote Wilderness areas far from any other person or trail. I never felt endangered. Cognizant of the risks but not worried for my safety.
Paulides, West, and others overstate the danger.

Might want to check out this site.

http://www.nabigfootsearch.com/directors_message_1.html

It's Paulides' "other" site. He has endorsed some, well, stuff that does not smell very good. Like Melba Ketchum's Bigfoot DNA train wreck. Good God! I have no problem with the idea that Bigfoot is real, but an awful lot of the "research" in that area is a joke.

I live within an easy day's drive of many parks and monuments, know a few current and former Park Service people, as well as Forest Service and BLM employees, SAR volunteers, and so on. Paulides tells some spooky stories, and a few might be real, but nobody out here buys his claims of anything like an epidemic. What we do see a lot of is people getting into trouble by being careless, stupid or just absurdly unprepared. The deserts and mountains and forests might just kill you, if you ask for it.

I checked out his bigfoot website. What a joke!

He embraces every crackpot bigfoot story as gospel. Also noticed he is selling bigfoot merchandise from the site. That tells me it is more about making money than science.

I would have to go back and look it up but if memory serves there are roughly 1 million people reported as missing every year in the US alone per the FBI statistics.
Of these about 2 thirds are taken off the list within a year by the agency that filed the original report for various reasons. By the end of the third year all but about 100,000 are found or removed from the list.
This last group are almost never found.
At the same time thousands of sets of human remains are found every year in the US that are never identified. Some sets are very old and some are very fresh, but none has a way of being identified.
This is in a fairly advanced country in a fairly civilized part of the world.
God knows how many go missing world wide. Or why.
