East Texas UFO

HALLSVILLE, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas couple saw a mysterious object in the sky. So, they decided to catch it on tape.
"Michelle Hampton" is still stunned by the video she and her husband took Saturday morning around 6:00 on their back porch.
"I had no idea what it was. I've never seen anything like this before ever and I don't think I ever will be seeing anything like this. So at least we got it on tape," said Michelle Hampton of Hallsville.
"We looked up and saw a shiny object in the sky and I don't know what it was, but it was going crazy," said Hampton. "You could tell it was doing something but you really couldn't tell what it was. It was getting bigger and changing different colors. It would get smaller and bigger and go everywhere."

What's the UFO?
HALLSVILLE, TX (KLTV) - It's the infamous UFO video that has East Texans talking. But the real question is, what do the experts have to say about it?
Astronomer Tom Hooton, of the Hundall Planetarium, has seen all types of objects in the sky. He thinks he may know what the East Texas UFO could possibly be.
"If you were looking in the eastern sky at 6:00 a.m., at low horizon; Venus is definitely in that part of the sky."
Hooton isn't alone on his Venus prediction. Amateur Astronomer, "Don Scharm's" telescope is almost as big as he is. So what did he think, when he saw the UFO?

There seems to be a link between the movements of the object and the movement of the background at least in the first few second of the film. I would suspect that camera shake had a lot to do with it's erratic motion.

The one that this lady taped and described is very simular to the one that was taped in the Stephenville incident. Kind of erratic. Not too far away either.

Venus is in the eastern sky before sunrise and has been for some months. Soon Venus will pass superior conjunction with the sun and appear in the night sky after sunset.
All you have to do to visually confirm that it is a celestial body is to look at the same place in the sky at the same time on consecutive days. If the object is still there, it probably belongs there.

I have lived quite a while and never have I seen Venus do anything like that, and I am an avid sky watcher.
Am I missing something

Venus can be the "morning star" or the "evening star" depending on its position relative to the sun and earth. Check this link.

I always go out and look at Venus, because Venus, according to my horoscope is my ruling planet. She is a beauty.... but I have never seen her look "up close," and make all sorts of strange movements.... in nearly 50 years of looking at her. I have seen her bright, and even seen her look like she is changing colours but she never moves, like in that video.

No, Venus doesn't make trails in the sky. But if the camera is hand held and the exposure is too long, jiggly trails happen. I tried once to photograph Venus with a hand held camera and got results that look like the video. See this link:

Yes, I know Nodnunk, we had a similar experience trying to take photos when the moon and stars made a smiling face, but apart from the video this lady said:
"We looked up and saw a shiny object in the sky and I don't know what it was, but it was going crazy," said Hampton. "You could tell it was doing something but you really couldn't tell what it was. It was getting bigger and changing different colors. It would get smaller and bigger and go everywhere."

We know from the above description that the sighting took place at 6:00 in the morning of October 31, 2009. Halloween morning. The location was their back porch. Venus was at a low elevation angle in the southeast. If their porch faces east or south or somewhere in between, what they saw could have been Venus. If their porch faces some other direction, the object was not Venus. If the object was in the southeast sky, Venus should have been visible too, but no mention is made of another bright object nearby. Since Venus was at a low elevation angle, the variable colors and apparent motion could have been due to scintillation. Given what we know from the story, all we can say is that the object could have been Venus.

| I have seen Venus appear to move, although only while it was cloudy, and the sky was clear that morning over Hallsville. Venus, though, should have been visible above the horizon in the east.
In the video, when the ufo is visible with other scenery in frame, it doesn't look to me like the ufo is moving relative to that scenery. On the other hand, the reporter, LaKecia Shockley, whose voice we hear in the video, says "the UFO was going so crazy that they had to move the camera just to keep up with its movements." That would suggest that the Hampton's actually did see the object moving while they were filming it, but, that could have been an illusion caused by viewing the object through the camera's viewfinder.

| Unless we can find out what direction that cabin is in relation to their back porch, which I have tried to do using Google Maps, but the view of their property as seen in the video is too nondescript.

I asked LaKecia Shockley, of KLTV, in what compass direction the Hampton's were looking when they viewed the UFO, and she responded, "From the East." Which I take to mean, toward the east. Although, I cannot be certain that she hadn't meant that the Hampton's were east of the UFO. If the UFO was seen in the east, then that strengthens the possibility that Venus was likely what they have witnessed.
