What It’s Like to Spend 20 Years Listening to Psychopaths for Science

By Greg Miller
04.17.14 | 6:30 am

Kent Kiehl was walking briskly towards the airport exit, eager to get home, when a security guard grabbed his arm. “Would you please come with me, sir?” he said. Kiehl complied, and he did his best to stay calm while security officers searched his belongings. Then, they asked him if there was anything he wanted to confess.

Kiehl is a neuroscientist at the Mind Research Network and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and he’s devoted his career to studying what’s different about the brains of psychopaths — people whose lack of compassion, empathy, and remorse has a tendency to get them into trouble with the law. On the plane, Kiehl had been typing up notes from an interview he’d done with a psychopath in Illinois who’d been convicted of murdering two women and raping and killing a 10-year old girl. The woman sitting next to him thought he was typing out a confession.

Kiehl recounts the story in a new book about his research, The Psychopath Whisperer. He has been interviewing psychopaths for more than 20 years, and the book is filled with stories of these colorful (and occasionally off-color) encounters. (Actually, The Psychopath Listener would have been a more accurate, if less grabby title.) More recently he’s acquired a mobile MRI scanner and permission to scan the brains of New Mexico state prison inmates. So far he’s scanned about 3,000 violent offenders, including 500 psychopaths.

He talked with WIRED about what’s different in the brains of psychopaths and why he views psychopathy as a preventable mental disorder.

WIRED: How do real life psychopaths differ from ones we see on TV or in movies?

Kent Kiehl: One of the biggest differences is that psychopaths are way more common than people believe. About one in 150 people will meet the stringent clinical criteria for the disorder. That means hundreds of thousands of them are out and about in the population. The majority of them don’t commit violent crimes, but they lead this sort of disorganized, nomadic life, and they tend to eventually end up in some sort of trouble. Hollywood hasn’t done a good job of portraying the average psychopath. For the most part, they’ve taken the extreme view, with the Hannibal Lecters and more sensationalized people like that. It’s actually far more common and banal.

WIRED: People also tend to confuse psychopathy and psychosis — what’s the difference?

Kiehl: Right. With psychopathy the main features are lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse — and impulsivity. Psychosis is a fragmentation of the mind where you have hallucinations and delusions. It’s a very different disorder. You almost never find someone who has psychotic delusions and even moderate levels of psychopathic traits.

WIRED: In the book you write that in two decades you’ve only come across a handful of people who scored 40 out of 40 on the psychopathy checklist (30 is commonly used as the psychopath cutoff. Regular folks tend to score around 4 or 5). What is it like to talk to a perfect psychopath?

Kiehl: They are so fundamentally different. You leave the room knowing that you’ve just met someone who is extremely different, even different from other psychopaths. They are absolutely and completely free from conscience. They have this unbelievably flat affect that’s really palpable when you look in their eyes.

They Came From All Over the Planet - 27th annual UFO conference enjoys record attendance, celebrity speakers

Thursday, April 17, 2014
By Kathryn Lucariello

EUREKA SPRINGS -- More than 750 people attended the 27th annual Ozark Mountain UFO Conference this past weekend in Eureka Springs. The venue, held at the Inn of the Ozarks Conference Center, was sold out and packed in the main room, and a second, overflow room showed the presentations on a screen. This event has been reported as the largest UFO conference in the country.

Nine speakers regaled attendees with accounts and information from a diverse range of subjects, including government disclosure of UFO activity, recent archeological finds and their extraterrestrial implications and UFO abductees/contactees.

Popular author and hypnotherapist Dolores Cannon, who took over the conference last year after a gap following the death of long-time conference organizer Lucius Farish, opened the conference by presenting the Lucius Farish Trust award of $1,000 and an engraved crystal to world-renowned ufologist Richard Dolan via Skype.

Cannon added two film debuts, "Hidden Hand" and "Zipper" this year and said she hopes to expand film offerings in the future. She said she wants to keep the conference in Eureka Springs and keep it true to Farish's emphasis on UFO research.

Highlights of the conference included contactee Sherry Wilde, who said she had hundreds of abduction experiences since childhood, speaking intimately of them, and said she finally came to understand "why me?"

"They said, 'You're a volunteer/participant,'" she said, one of millions who came to Earth after the 1945 atomic bomb drop.

"We figured out the only way we could help was incarnate by the millions to come help. Earth humans fell into fear and got stuck on the planet and started a game called karma. Karma is a lie."

She said there are three important things to know: that "we are all one with our Creator;" that "we are multidimensional beings existing on more than one level at a time;" and that we should "monitor [our] thoughts; keep [our] thoughts positive."

Hollywood film producer and new MUFON board director Anthony Cataldo spoke about "701: the Movie," which he is making about UFO/ET contacts. Out of the thousands of cases that have been reported, 701 of them cannot be debunked, he said. He spoke and showed film clips of 200 children in Zimbabwe, a Socorro, N.M., police officer and others around the world who have had "close encounters of the third kind," including an account of an ET with a broken leg who crash-landed in Varginha, Brazil, and was treated in a hospital. He said the doctor who treated the broken leg was astonished at the rapid healing once the bone was set. The creature communicated with him telepathically and told him, "You have the abilities we have; you just don't know it because you are cut off from your spiritual nature."

Cataldo said the movie will be a full-length feature film and will be released next Spring.

A favorite speaker who has been a presenter since the first conference was journalist and decades-long UFO researcher Linda Moulton Howe, speaking on "10,000 B.C. Gobekli Tepe and Ancient Stone Circles: ET Terraforming?" Howe gave accounts of stone circles found around the world going back thousands of years, and showed photographs of carvings of humanoid figures with possibly six fingers on each hand. She questioned the purpose of such sites beyond serving as accurate astronomical calendars.

"Stonehenge resonates at 10 Hertz," Howe said. "It is the alpha wave pattern of the human brain. Why was it constructed to resonate at 10 Hertz in addition to being a calendar ...?"

Howe said that in 1983 when she visited Kirtland Air Force base, she was given a presidential briefing paper that said that ETs "manipulated DNA of already evolving primates to create Homo sapiens" and that all the questions had been answered and "the project was now closed."

She concluded her presentation with a speculation about why ETs are abducting people.

"They are taking DNA to use as 'bandaids' for themselves in the future," she said. "Are they taking DNA because this is the last time DNA was functional?"

Famous Coast-to-Coast radio show host George Noory provided the comedic component of the conference. Escorted in by Star Wars Imperial stormtroopers, he regaled the crowd with jokes, but mostly answered audience questions. He also referenced the recent incident of the Nevada rancher who won a standoff against the Bureau of Land Management and urged attendees to "take our country back and take our planet back."

Other speakers included planetary scientist Antonio Paris, on the impracticability of spacecraft to reach the Earth or for humans to travel very far or for very long in space, and Nick Pope and Haktan Akdogan, who covered UFO documents disclosure by governments.

Sunday the conference was concluded with Travis Walton of "Fire in the Sky" fame and Cannon, who mostly took questions from the audience.

WASHINGTON—Putting the nation on alert against what it has described as a “highly credible terrorist threat,” the FBI announced today that it has uncovered a plot by members of al-Qaeda to sit back and enjoy themselves while the United States collapses of its own accord.

Multiple intelligence agencies confirmed that the militant Islamist organization and its numerous affiliates intend to carry out a massive, coordinated plan to stand aside and watch America’s increasingly rapid decline, with terrorist operatives across the globe reportedly mobilizing to take it easy, relax, and savor the spectacle as it unfolds.

“We have intercepted electronic communication indicating that al-Qaeda members are actively plotting to stay out of the way while America as we know it gradually crumbles under the weight of its own self-inflicted debt and disrepair,” FBI Deputy Director Mark F. Giuliano told the assembled press corps. “If this plan succeeds, it will leave behind a nation with a completely dysfunctional economy, collapsing infrastructure, and a catastrophic health crisis afflicting millions across the nation. We want to emphasize that this danger is very real.”

“And unfortunately, based on information we have from intelligence assets on the ground, this plot is already well under way,” he added.

A recently declassified CIA report confirmed that all known al-Qaeda-affiliated organizations—from Pakistan to Yemen, and from Somalia to Algeria—have been instructed to kick back and enjoy the show as the United States’ federal government, energy grid, and industrial sector are rendered impotent by internal dissent, decay, and mismanagement. According to statements made by top-level informants and corroborated by leading Western terrorism experts, if seen through to its conclusion, al-Qaeda’s current plot could wreak far more damage than the events of 9/11.

In the past year, money transfers to al-Qaeda cells around the world have reportedly been accompanied by instructions to use the funds to outfit safe houses with the proper equipment to receive American cable news broadcasts and view top U.S. news websites, allowing terrorists to fully relish each detail of the impending demise of the last global superpower.

Additionally, FBI officials made public an internal al-Qaeda video today in which the terrorist organization’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri chillingly exhorts his followers to “take a load off” and “unwind” in the name of jihad, and really cherish the victory over their enemy.

“Praise Allah, for soon every American city shall be plagued with disaster and hardship,” al-Zawahiri said in the video, which includes several minutes of footage of young, masked al-Qaeda militants casually sipping beverages as they thumb through the latest issues of Time and U.S. News And World Report. “The infidels have brought this pain and destruction upon themselves through their arrogance and callousness. Soon, the United States will watch in horror as its bridges crumble, its desperate citizens suffer in want of medicine and paying employment, and its once vast riches are reduced to naught. The righteous warriors among our ranks must now unite, get comfortable, and look on from afar at the calamity unfolding in the West.”

“We vow that we will not cease sitting around and laughing it up until America is reduced to rubble,” he continued.

Al-Zawahiri, who is seen in the video reclining back in his chair, putting his feet up, and flipping on CNN, later shouts “Allahu Akbar!” when a story is aired about the decade-long trend of stagnant wages among American workers.

The FBI has also warned that numerous al-Qaeda agents may have established sleeper cells for the purpose of “getting a kick out of” the nation’s downfall on American soil. The bureau urged U.S. residents to use caution around schools, hospitals, legislative bodies, prisons, and other decaying institutions whose imminent failure terrorists may wish to observe up close.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one high-ranking U.S. counterterrorism official has described the present situation as a massive failure of intelligence.

“The warning signs were there all along, but unfortunately we failed to heed them,” said the official, who advised Americans to brace for widespread devastation. “If we’d listened to experts or even our own common sense, we would’ve realized that this plot was being actively orchestrated within our own borders. But we didn’t, and now every one of our citizens and our very way of life is at risk from this threat.”

“Sadly, al-Qaeda has us right where they want us,” the official added, “and at this point, I fear it is too late to do anything about it.”

Responding to the allegations, a spokesperson for al-Qaeda reportedly confirmed the terror group’s plot and praised the American people as martyrs of the highest order.

Wow he looks really relaxed...smiley we are in trouble..
sayyyyy.I wonder if anyone asked Antonio what was it working at Booze Allen and did he see any ufo reports or special studies while there..I bet that would be really interesting..maybe even a comment on Ed Snowden and his feelings..It's great we have all these veteran miltary
involved like Pope and such giving us a big hand and the real deal on this matter... grin

scary isn't..what is amazing one of their leaders predicted this humorous tongue in cheeks scenario....see Al Qaeda wiki. scroll down to about halfway on their goals..they are way ahead of schedule predicted for 2020 cry

On March 11, 2005, Al-Quds Al-Arabi published extracts from Saif al-Adel's document "Al Qaeda's Strategy to the Year 2020".[72][73] Abdel Bari Atwan summarizes this strategy as comprising five stages to rid the Ummah from all forms of oppression:

Provoke the United States and the West into invading a Muslim country by staging a massive attack or string of attacks on U.S. soil that results in massive civilian casualties.
Incite local resistance to occupying forces.
Expand the conflict to neighboring countries, and engage the U.S. and its allies in a long war of attrition.
Convert al-Qaeda into an ideology and set of operating principles that can be loosely franchised in other countries without requiring direct command and control, and via these franchises incite attacks against the U.S. and countries allied with the U.S. until they withdraw from the conflict, as happened with the 2004 Madrid train bombings, but which did not have the same effect with the July 7, 2005 London bombings.
The U.S. economy will finally collapse by the year 2020 under the strain of multiple engagements in numerous places, making the worldwide economic system which is dependent on the U.S. also collapse leading to global political instability, which in turn leads to a global jihad led by al-Qaeda and a Wahhabi Caliphate will then be installed across the world following the collapse of the U.S. and the rest of the Western world countries.

Atwan also noted, regarding the collapse of the U.S., "If this sounds far-fetched, it is sobering to consider that this virtually describes the downfall of the Soviet Union."[72]

THEY WORK FOR THEM

from ZH

If you listen carefully, you can hear the stampede of politicians distancing themselves from their once best-friend - Hotel magnate Sant Singh Chatwal - as AP reports, he plead guilty Thursday to charges he secretly funneled more than $180,000 in illegal campaign contributions to three unnamed candidates and coached someone to lie about it. Without the contributions "nobody will even talk to you," Chatwal said. "That's the only way to buy them, get into the system." Welcome to the ugly truth of American politik.

The Greasin of The American Palm

The FT details that Sant Singh Chatwal, chairman of Hampshire Hotels Management, pleaded guilty on Thursday to making more than $180,000 in illegal federal campaign donations to three candidates through “straw donors” who were reimbursed, the DoJ said in a statement.

He raised at least $100,000 for Hillary Clinton in her 2008 presidential campaign against Barack Obama.

The justice department did not comment on whether Mrs Clinton was one of the three candidates, but it said there was no allegation that candidates took part in or were aware of Mr Chatwal’s scheme.

Mr Chatwal was skirting legal limits on contributions to an individual candidate’s campaign of $2,300 in 2008 and $2,400 in 2010.

As AP explains the fraud was extensive...

Court papers allege that between 2007 and 2011, Chatwal used his employees, business associates and contractors who worked on his hotels to collect contributions from straw donors in Queens, Long Island and elsewhere. He then arranged to pay the donors back, a violation of the election laws.

As part the scheme, an unnamed business associate submitted a bill to Chatwal for $104,745 in 2011 for purported work done for one of Chatwal's companies. Prosecutors allege that $69,000 of the total actually was reimbursement for money the associate had raised via straw donors.

In a conversation recorded in 2012, Chatwal instructed the associate that if he were asked if Chatwal gave him the money back, he should respond, "Never."

Chatwal directly backed several Democratic candidates with his own money — at least $31,200 since 2004, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Among them were New York Reps. Joe Crowley and Gary Ackerman, along with California Rep. Howard Berman and Florida Rep. Robert Wexler. He also gave money to Montana Sen. Jon Tester, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid, Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner.

say it ain't so Harry!
And leaves the ugly truth of American politics behind...

An informant caught Sant Singh Chatwal on tape in 2010 explaining that he believed his illegal fundraising bought him access to people in power.

Without the contributions "nobody will even talk to you," Chatwal said. "That's the only way to buy them, get into the system."

Science Daily

First potentially habitable Earth-sized planet confirmed by Gemini and Keck observatories

Date:
April 17, 2014

Source:
Gemini Observatory

The first Earth-sized exoplanet orbiting within the habitable zone of another star has been confirmed by observations with both the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Gemini Observatory. The initial discovery, made by NASA's Kepler Space Telescope, is one of a handful of smaller planets found by Kepler and verified using large ground-based telescopes. It also confirms that Earth-sized planets do exist in the habitable zone of other stars.

"What makes this finding particularly compelling is that this Earth-sized planet, one of five orbiting this star, which is cooler than the Sun, resides in a temperate region where water could exist in liquid form," says Elisa Quintana of the SETI Institute and NASA Ames Research Center who led the paper published in the current issue of the journal Science. The region in which this planet orbits its star is called the habitable zone, as it is thought that life would most likely form on planets with liquid water.

Steve Howell, Kepler's Project Scientist and a co-author on the paper, adds that neither Kepler (nor any telescope) is currently able to directly spot an exoplanet of this size and proximity to its host star. "However, what we can do is eliminate essentially all other possibilities so that the validity of these planets is really the only viable option."

With such a small host star, the team employed a technique that eliminated the possibility that either a background star or a stellar companion could be mimicking what Kepler detected. To do this, the team obtained extremely high spatial resolution observations from the eight-meter Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawai`i using a technique called speckle imaging, as well as adaptive optics (AO) observations from the ten-meter Keck II telescope, Gemini's neighbor on Mauna Kea. Together, these data allowed the team to rule out sources close enough to the star's line-of-sight to confound the Kepler evidence, and conclude that Kepler's detected signal has to be from a small planet transiting its host star.

"The Keck and Gemini data are two key pieces of this puzzle," says Quintana. "Without these complementary observations we wouldn't have been able to confirm this Earth-sized planet."

The Gemini "speckle" data directly imaged the system to within about 400 million miles (about 4 AU, approximately equal to the orbit of Jupiter in our solar system) of the host star and confirmed that there were no other stellar size objects orbiting within this radius from the star. Augmenting this, the Keck AO observations probed a larger region around the star but to fainter limits. According to Quintana,

"These Earth-sized planets are extremely hard to detect and confirm, and now that we've found one, we want to search for more. Gemini and Keck will no doubt play a large role in these endeavors."

The host star, Kepler-186, is an M1-type dwarf star relatively close to our solar system, at about 500 light years and is in the constellation of Cygnus. The star is very dim, being over half a million times fainter than the faintest stars we can see with the naked eye. Five small planets have been found orbiting this star, four of which are in very short-period orbits and are very hot. The planet designated Kepler-186f, however, is earth-sized and orbits within the star's habitable zone. The Kepler evidence for this planetary system comes from the detection of planetary transits. These transits can be thought of as tiny eclipses of the host star by a planet (or planets) as seen from Earth. When such planets block part of the star's light, its total brightness diminishes. Kepler detects that as a variation in the star's total light output and evidence for planets. So far more than 3,800 possible planets have been detected by this technique with Kepler.

The Gemini data utilized the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument (DSSI) on the Gemini North telescope. DSSI is a visiting instrument developed by a team led by Howell who adds, "DSSI on Gemini Rocks! With this combination, we can probe down into this star system to a distance of about 4 times that between Earth and the Sun. It's simply remarkable that we can look inside other solar systems." DSSI works on a principle that utilizes multiple short exposures of an object to capture and remove the noise introduced by atmospheric turbulence producing images with extreme detail.

Observations with the W.M. Keck Observatory used the Natural Guide Star Adaptive Optics system with the NIRC2 camera on the Keck II telescope. NIRC2 (the Near-Infrared Camera, second generation) works in combination with the Keck II adaptive optics system to obtain very sharp images at near-infrared wavelengths, achieving spatial resolutions comparable to or better than those achieved by the Hubble Space

Telescope at optical wavelengths. NIRC2 is probably best known for helping to provide definitive proof of a central massive black hole at the center of our galaxy. Astronomers also use NIRC2 to map surface features of solar system bodies, detect planets orbiting other stars, and study detailed morphology of distant galaxies.

"The observations from Keck and Gemini, combined with other data and numerical calculations, allowed us to be 99.98% confident that Kepler-186f is real," says Thomas Barclay, a Kepler scientist and also a co-author on the paper. "Kepler started this story, and Gemini and Keck helped close it," adds Barclay.

Mount Everest avalanche kills 12 guides; 4 still missing

by Natalie DiBlasio,
10:25 a.m. EDT
April 18, 2014

An avalanche has left 12 dead and four missing in the worst-ever recorded disaster on Mount Everest.

With peak season just days away on the deadly mountain, Sherpas and guides are busy preparing for the trek up the highest peak in the world.

"The Sherpa guides were carrying up equipment and other necessities for climbers when the disaster happened," a spokesman for Nepal's Tourism Ministry, Mohan Krishna Sapkota, told the AFP news agency.

Before a climber begins the assent, hired Sherpas set up camps at higher altitudes and fix routes and ropes on the slopes above.

The Sherpa guides had gone early in the morning to fix ropes when the avalanche hit them just below Camp 2 at about 6:30 a.m., Nepal Tourism Ministry official Krishna Lamsal said from the base camp where he is monitoring rescue efforts.

Survivor Dawa Tashi — one of two Sherpas who were injured and airlifted to Nepal's capital, Katmandu — was in the intensive care unit at Grande Hospital with several broken ribs.

Tashi told his visiting relatives that the Sherpa guides were delayed because of the unsteady path. Suddenly, the avalanche fell on the group and buried many of them, Tashi's sister-in-law Dawa Yanju told the Associated Press.

Hundreds have died attempting to reach the peak, many of them Sherpas. The Sherpa people are one of the main ethnic groups in Nepal's alpine region, and many make their livings as climbing guides on Everest and other Himalayan peaks.

Before this avalanche, the worst recorded disaster on Everest had been a snowstorm on May 11, 1996, that killed eight climbers. Six Nepalese guides were killed in an avalanche in 1970.

More than 4,000 climbers have scaled the summit since 1953, when it was first conquered by New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association said the area where the avalanche hit is nicknamed the "popcorn field" and is just below Camp 2 at 21,000 feet.

As soon as the avalanche hit, rescuers and fellow climbers rushed to help.

More than 100 passengers on board a Delta Airlines plane will be screened by the FBI after the arriving flight was forced to land in a remote corner of Denver International Airport due to a threatening note.

The plane, Flight 1500 from Detroit, had 151 passengers on board. It landed at DIA at about 4:40 p.m.

As of 7:15 p.m. passengers, luggage and the aircraft were still being screened by the FBI, said Dave Joly, spokesman for the FBI Denver division.

Aaron Baratz, a passenger, told The Denver Post via Twitter that the passengers were being taken from the area by bus. They were not allowed to open overhead compartments and retrieve any bags.

Authorities, including K-9 are securing the plane.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
