MUFON Celebrate the Existence of UFO’s in Memphis with the First Annual World UFO Day Festival!

The TN Chapter of MUFON Will Celebrate the Existence of UFO’s at Pine Hill Park on World UFO Day Thursday July 2, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Tennessee chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (“MUFON”) is pleased to announce that on Thursday, July 2, 2015 the City of Memphis will be home to the First Annual World UFO Day Festival in Pine Hill Park. The World UFO Day Festival will be a day-long event with a wide array of attractions including family events, great music, a moon-walking contest, alien costume contest, pet alien costume contest, family movie and documentary viewing, carnival rides and games, food vendors, balloon release, and much more, including some of the country’s best known researchers and experiencers in the field of Ufology.

Nick Pope, who at one time investigated UFOs for the British Government, said about the First Annual World UFO Day Festival in Memphis:

"I'm sure this event will be a huge success. Questions such as whether or not we're alone in the Universe and whether we're being visited are some of the biggest and most profound questions we can ask. The speakers coming to Memphis are the top experts in this field and may be able to answer these questions. This event promises to be interesting, controversial, and great fun."

The festival will begin early at 8:00 in the morning with everyone’s favorite, the Galactic Parade. A bit geeky, full of fun, and truly a treat for the eyes, the Parade will definitely set your mood for all other events throughout the rest of the day. Following the parade, will be the Pet Alien Costume Contest. Festival organizers are encouraging everybody to bring along their pets and participate in the contest – after all, humans are not the only Earthlings who deserve to have fun in an event like this. The winner will be judged by crowd participation.

After the parade, former Memphis police officer, Captain Lamar Todd, will be the focal point of attraction. Captain Lamar Todd, one of the two brave Memphis City Police officers who, on a May, 1977 evening, spotted a triangular-shaped unidentified flying object (UFO) at Norris Road intersection and followed it until the strange object moved away from them at rapid speed and disappeared (see attached news article from 1977). The presence of a strange flying object in the area that night was later confirmed by three other off-duty police officers from North Precinct.

Following Captain Lamar Todd’s presentation, the Close Up Kings will begin to wow festival goers with their close up magic. If you love magic, then you will not want to miss the Close Up Kings, whom also have their own tv show on the SyFy Channel. These guys are so phenomenal that it would not be a shocker if you ended up wondering whether they are really humans or representatives of some magical civilization from some distant planet in another galaxy.

After the magical performance by the Close Up Kings, world-famous UFO abductee, Travis Walton, will be on stage to share his up-close encounter with a unidentified flying saucer in Arizona in 1975. If you are a keen follower of real-life UFO encounters, then odds are high you already have some familiarity with the story of Walton – a story that became a book, Fire in the Sky, and also a movie. There will also be a special 90-minute screening of the renowned documentary Travis – The True Story of Travis Walton.

The afternoon session of the event will also feature Peter Robbins, co-author of the British best-seller Left at East Gate. Expect some invaluable insights from Robbins on UFO investigations and other controversial topics such as how and why government agencies cover-up and downplay any incident relating to UFOs.

The afternoon session includes other attractions such as Moon Walking Contest and Aliens vs Human game show, and an array of other fun activities in the amusement area. For more information visit www.worldufodaymemphis.org/ for a detailed schedule of the event.

Children are welcome at this festival to enjoy activities and games including face painting, the bounce house, moon-walking contest, alien costume contest, a family movie, rides and games. Activities for children will begin at 10:00 in the morning and will continue until 6:30 in the evening.

For all music lovers, there will be plenty of quality live music, too. The Evening session will begin with a panel discussion, which to be followed by Sky Watching. The Night Session will have a free family movie, DJ music and dancing under the stars.

More attractions are likely to be added to this tentative line-up as the big day approaches. The updated schedule of the event and tickets (including free passes) can be accessed at the official World UFO Day Festival, Memphis website.

CTV News Vancouver B.C.

Unsolved mystery: Speculation abounds after B.C. UFO sighting

Published Thursday, April 30, 2015 3:25PM PDT
Last Updated Thursday, April 30, 2015 3:29PM PDT

A strange object has been caught on video flying across the night sky in Esquimalt, B.C., and the people who filmed it insist it’s a UFO.

Brian Cooper and his wife Melissa were relaxing in bed watching a movie on Monday night when all of a sudden they saw something outside their window: two strange objects darting around the night sky.

“At that point we were at a loss for words and we were like ‘what the hell is that?’” Brian Cooper told CTV Vancouver Island.

Cooper and his wife leapt out to their second-storey balcony and used their cell phone to film what he claims is likely a secret military vehicle, or maybe even proof of alien life.

“I have never seen anything like this in my life. I’m a very skeptical person,” he said.

Cooper said the objects first appeared around 8:30 p.m. While one soon vanished, the other kept flying over the area – including over Esquimalt’s Navy base.

He describes it as being as big as a Volkswagen, flying like a drone, except much faster. He said the circular craft had lights that “spun in all different directions.”

The couple weren’t the only ones to witness the strange phenomenon. Veralynn Weaver, who lives upstairs, says she also saw the UFOs, and can’t explain what they are either.

“I have no idea,” she said. “I’ve grown up on military bases and I’ve never seen anything like that.”

The Navy base declined to view the cell phone footage, but confirmed there were no military flights of any kind near the base on Monday. No reports were filed to either the Victoria or Saanich police either.

CTV Vancouver Island showed the footage to Dr. John Willis, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Victoria. He said with grainy and shaky cell phone video – with no audio – it’s impossible to determine exactly what’s in the sky.

“These are taken on the spur of the moment,” he said, adding that 99 per cent of the time there’s a UFO sighting there is also a simple explanation.

As for whether he believes it could be an alien life form?

“I can’t definitely rule it out on the basis of that evidence. But I’m going to put my eggs in one basket and say no,” he said.

Willis said a more likely explanation is that the flying object is a drone, but “with evidence of this quality you can’t make a 100 per cent call every time.”

After being shown the video, an expert in drones said it’s likely that what the Coopers saw was a phantom aircraft.

“That’s a UAV drone. Multi-rotar, electric air vehicle,” said David Carlos of Victoria Air Photos & Survey.

But much like Willis, the expert was careful not to rule everything out.

“I would say absolutely not an alien life form. But never 100 percent,” Carlos said.

As for the Coopers, they’re still would like to definitively know what they saw outside their apartment – and aren’t satisfied with the explanation.

“Myself personally, I do not have a rational explanation of what is was,” said Brian Cooper.

Science Daily

Brain scan reveals out-of-body illusion

Date: April 30, 2015
Source: Karolinska Institutet

The feeling of being inside one's own body is not as self-evident as one might think. In a new study from Sweden's Karolinska Institutet, neuroscientists created an out-of-body illusion in participants placed inside a brain scanner. They then used the illusion to perceptually 'teleport' the participants to different locations in a room and show that the perceived location of the bodily self can be decoded from activity patterns in specific brain regions.

The sense of owning one's body and being located somewhere in space is so fundamental that we usually take it for granted. To the brain, however, this is an enormously complex task that requires continuous integration of information from our different senses in order to maintain an accurate sense of where the body is located with respect to the external world. Studies in rats have shown that specific regions of the brain contain GPS-like 'place cells' that signal the rat's position in the room -- a discovery that was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. To date, however, it remains unknown how the human brain shapes our perceptual experience of being a body somewhere in space, and whether the regions that have been identified in rats are involved in this process.

In a new study, published in the scientific journal Current Biology, the scientists created an out-of-body illusion in fifteen healthy participants placed inside a brain scanner. In the experiment, the participants wore head-mounted displays and viewed themselves and the brain scanner from another part of the room. From the new visual perspective, the participant observes the body of a stranger in the foreground while their physical body is visible in the background, protruding from the bore of the brain scanner. To elicit the illusion, the scientist touches the participant's body with an object in synchrony with identical touches being delivered to the stranger's body, in full view of the participant.

"In a matter of seconds, the brain merges the sensation of touch and visual input from the new perspective, resulting in the illusion of owning the stranger's body and being located in that body's position in the room, outside the participant's physical body," says Arvid Guterstam, lead author of the present study.

In the most important part of the study, the scientists used the out-of-body illusion to perceptually 'teleport' the participants between different places in the scanner room. They then employed pattern recognition techniques to analyze the brain activity and show that the perceived self-location can be decoded from activity patterns in specific areas in the temporal and parietal lobes. Furthermore, the scientists could demonstrate a systematic relationship between the information content in these patterns and the participants' perceived vividness of the illusion of being located in a specific out-of-body position.

"The sense of being a body located somewhere in space is essential for our interactions with the outside world and constitutes a fundamental aspect of human self-consciousness," says Arvid Guterstam. "Our results are important because they represent the first characterization of the brain areas that are involved in shaping the perceptual experience of the bodily self in space."

One of the brain regions from which the participants' perceived self-location could be decoded was the hippocampus -- the structure in which the Nobel Prize awarded 'place cells' have been identified.

"This finding is particularly interesting because it indicates that place cells are not only involved in navigation and memory encoding, but are also important for generating the conscious experience of one's body in space," says principal investigator Henrik Ehrsson, professor at the Department of Neuroscience.

4.2 quake shakes Michigan

6:52 p.m. EDT May 2, 2015

LANSING – The U.S. Geological Service reported via its website that an earthquake shook Michigan early this afternoon. Today's earthquake was the largest in Michigan since a magnitude 4.6 earthquake in 1947 in the same area, said Rob Dale, , Deputy Ingham County Emergency Manager.

"While on the low end of the scale, it is still quite rare for Michigan," Dale said.

He said extensive damage isn't common until earthquakes reach magnitude 6 or 7.

An earlier report of building damage in East Lansing turned out to be a decades-old drywall crack, Dale said. He said a book that fell off a shelf was the extent of earthquake damage in the Lansing area.

"That was the worst report that we got from our area. To have no damage at a 4 is not surprising at all," Dale said.

Michigan State University Infrastructure Planning and Facilities is checking structures on campus.

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids reported via its Twitter feed that staffers there felt the quake at 12:23 p.m.
