I agree 100 percent.
That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.
Thats why we should stop cutting these psycopaths a check as a downpayment for the lobbyists retirement plan.

GOOD MORNING cheesy

NASA.gov

'Deep Web Search' May Help Scientists

When you do a simple Web search on a topic, the results that pop up aren't the whole story. The Internet contains a vast trove of information -- sometimes called the "Deep Web" -- that isn't indexed by search engines: information that would be useful for tracking criminals, terrorist activities, sex trafficking and the spread of diseases. Scientists could also use it to search for images and data from spacecraft.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been developing tools as part of its Memex program that access and catalog this mysterious online world. Researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, have joined the Memex effort to harness the benefits of deep Web searching for science. Memex could, for example, help catalog the vast amounts of data NASA spacecraft deliver on a daily basis.

"We're developing next-generation search technologies that understand people, places, things and the connections between them," said Chris Mattmann, principal investigator for JPL's work on Memex.

Memex checks not just standard text-based content online but also images, videos, pop-up ads, forms, scripts and other ways information is stored to look at how they are interrelated.

"We're augmenting Web crawlers to behave like browsers -- in other words, executing scripts and reading ads in ways that you would when you usually go online. This information is normally not catalogued by search engines," Mattmann said.

Additionally, a standard Web search doesn't get much information from images and videos, but Memex can recognize what's in this content and pair it with searches on the same subjects. The search tool could identify the same object across many frames of a video or even different videos.

The video and image search capabilities of Memex could one day benefit space missions that take photos, videos and other kinds of imaging data with instruments such as spectrometers. Searching visual information about a particular planetary body could greatly facilitate the work of scientists in analyzing geological features. Scientists analyzing imaging data from Earth-based missions that monitor phenomena such as snowfall and soil moisture could similarly benefit.

Memex would also enhance the search for published scientific data, so that scientists can be better aware of what has been released and analyzed on their topics. The technology could be applied to large NASA data centers such as the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center, which makes NASA's ocean and climate data accessible and meaningful. Memex would make PDF documents more easily searchable and allow users to more easily arrive at the information they seek. Awareness of existing publications also helps program managers to assess the impact of spacecraft data.

All of the code written for Memex is open-source. JPL is one of 17 teams working on it as part of the DARPA initiative.

Memex is related to DARPA's previous Big Data initiative called XDATA, managed by DARPA Program Manager Wade Shen. That research effort is also aimed at processing and analyzing large amounts of data, with defense, government and civilian applications. JPL was one of 24 groups involved.

"We are developing open source, free, mature products and then enhancing them using DARPA investment and easily transitioning them via our roles to the scientific community," Mattmann said.

Continuum Analytics Inc. of Austin, Texas, and Kitware Inc. of Clifton Park, New York, are partners on the JPL collaboration with Memex. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology.

Are aliens trying to tell us something… Or was it just a very big kite? Theories abound after thousands spot bizarre pattern in sky over China

•A strange light in the night sky has inspired raging debate across China

•It was spotted as far apart as Ningxia, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia

•But aviation experts claim it is more likely to be a rocket

•Bizarrely, from many angles, the unusual light looks a lot like a dragon

Internet users across China have become convinced that they have spotted a UFO hovering in the night sky.

Users from as far apart as Ningxia, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia – covering distances of more than 1,000km - posted photos of the unusual light which was spotted on the night of May 23.

Even the Civil Aviation Authority’s own publication ‘Hangkong Wuyu’ joined in the debate, arguing that the strange light was actually a rocket launch, said the People's Daily Online.

One Twitter user @ArchMaoyaning insisted: ‘I believe it could be a cloud but looking at the times the posters claim the photos were taken it doesn’t quite seem right.

‘Is it the scene of a rocket launch? I feel it may be interpreted as a UFO.’

A number of Chinese military experts spoke to Global Times newspaper about the internet sensation.

HONOLULU (AP) — Some Native Hawaiians disapprove of the name of a movie filmed and set in Hawaii, saying that titling it "Aloha" is a disrespectful misappropriation of culture and simplifies a word that's rich with meaning.

The Cameron Crowe film starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams and Emma Stone, opens Friday, with a screening in Honolulu three days before. The concerns are based largely on a trailer that depicts a military-themed love-story that appears devoid of a genuine connection to Hawaiian culture.

ZETAR,

NO, I'M ABOUT 200 MILES NORTH OF THE NEAREST POINT ON THAT LINE.

BACK IN THE SEVENTIES 'UNDERCURRENTS' MAGAZINE DID SOME ANALYSIS ON THIS KIND OF THING. YOU CAN STILL GET THE ARCHIVED COPIES ON LINE.

JUST GOOGLE 'UNDERCURRENTS' AND TAKE IT FROM THERE.

Killer robots will leave humans 'utterly defenceless' warns professor

Robots, called LAWS – lethal autonomous weapons systems – will be able to kill without human intervention

By Sarah Knapton, Science Editor
6:00PM BST 27 May 2015

Killer robots which are being developed by the US military ‘will leave humans utterly defenceless‘, an academic has warned.

Two programmes commissioned by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are seeking to create drones which can track and kill targets even when out of contact with their handlers.

Writing in the journal Nature, Stuart Russell, Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkley, said the research could breach the Geneva Convention and leave humanity in the hands of amoral machines.

“Autonomous weapons systems select and engage targets without human intervention; they become lethal when those targets include humans,” he said.

“Existing AI and robotics components can provide physical platforms, perception, motor control, navigation, mapping, tactical decision-making and long-term planning. They just need to be combined.

“In my view, the overriding concern should be the probable endpoint of this technological trajectory.

“Despite the limits imposed by physics, one can expect platforms deployed in the millions, the agility and lethality of which will leave humans utterly defenceless. This is not a desirable future.”

The robots, called LAWS – lethal autonomous weapons systems – are likely to be armed quadcopters of mini-tanks that can decided without human intervention who should live or die.

DARPA is currently working on two projects which could lead to killer bots. One is Fast Lightweight Autonomy (FLA) which is designing a tiny rotorcraft to manoeuvre unaided at high speed in urban areas and inside buildings. The other and Collaborative Operations in Denied Environment (CODE), is aiming to develop teams of autonomous aerial vehicles carrying out “all steps of a strike mission — find, fix, track, target, engage, assess” in situations in which enemy signal-jamming makes communication with a human commander impossible.

Last year Angela Kane, the UN’s high representative for disarmament, said killer robots were just a 'small step' away and called for a worldwide ban. But the Foreign Office has said while the technology had potentially "terrifying" implications, Britain "reserves the right" to develop it to protect troops.

Professor Russell said: "LAWS could violate fundamental principles of human dignity by allowing machines to choose whom to kill — for example, they might be tasked to eliminate anyone exhibiting ‘threatening behaviour’

“Debates should be organized at scientific meetings; arguments studied by ethics committees. Doing nothing is a vote in favour of continued development and deployment.”

However Dr Sabine Hauert, a lecturer in robotics at the University of Bristol said that the public did not need to fear the developments in aritifical intelligence.

“My colleagues and I spend dinner parties explaining that we are not evil but instead have been working for years to develop systems that could help the elderly, improve health care, make jobs safer and more efficient, and allow us to explore space or beneath the ocean,” she said.
