Houston, Texas - 09-26-13

After arriving home from work around 10:30 pm, I was walking across the parking lot when I noticed a dark, rectangle- shaped object above the building and between 2 clouds.

It seemed to be about 500 ft above me, mostly a black-colored body with 2 visible dim/dark grey lights or domes on the bottom edge.

It was moving silently in a southeast direction, gave off no light, and was fading away between the clouds, but not in the clouds.

I did not see the entire object, only the back corner as it faded. This event lasted about 5 seconds. I tried to rationalize what I saw by comparing it to planes, helicoptors, balloons, blimps, shadows, lights and large kites, but nothing was the right match.

Is Creation Convergent or Divergent..are they just tools of the Craft?
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/forget-little-green-men--aliens-will-look-like-humans-says-cambridge-university-evolution-expert-10358164.html

Forget little green men – aliens will look like humans, says Cambridge University evolution expert

They are often portrayed on screen as little green men with elongated limbs and saucer-like eyes.

From E.T to the X-Files, aliens from outer space have captured our imagination for decades.

Yet a new book from a leading evolutionary biologist argues that if they exist and we ever encountered them, they would look very similar to us.

Professor Simon Conway Morris said extra-terrestrials that resemble human beings should have evolved on at least some of the many Earth-like planets that have been discovered by astronomers.

In his new book published on 2 July, The Runes of Evolution, the University of Cambridge academic builds on the principle of convergent evolution – that different species will independently evolve similar features, with the comparison of the camera eye of an octopus and a human eye a favourite example – and argues it will not just took place on Earth.

“An area of biology which is becoming popular, perhaps too popular, that the possibility evolution is becoming much more predictable than people thought,” he told The Independent. “The book is really trying to persuade the world that evolutionary convergence is completely ubiquitous. Wherever you look you see it.

“The theme is to try and drive the reader, gently of course, into the possibility that the things which we regard as most important, ie cognitive sophistication, large brains, intelligence, tool making, are also convergent. Therefore, in principle, other Earth-like planets should very much end up with the same sort of arrangement.”

Professor Conway Morris, a Fellow at St John’s College, said it follows that plant and animal life on other planets able to support life would also look similar to Earth’s.

He said: “Certainly it’s not the case that every Earth-like planet will have life let alone humanoids. But if you want a sophisticated plant it will look awfully like a flower. If you want a fly there’s only a few ways you can do that. If you want to swim, like a shark, there’s only a few ways you can do that. If you want to invent warm-bloodedness, like birds and mammals, there’s only a few ways to do that.

The whole business of extra-terrestrial life, Kepler [the most Earth-like planet ever discovered], the search for extra solar planets, and of course the various missions to Mars. This is all going along at such a pace at the moment we can be reasonably sure [any current ideas] might be open to revision in a few years.”

His theory leads on to Enrico Fermi’s famous paradox – why, if aliens do exist, have they not made contact. He admits his book goes “off-piste for a bit of fun” in the last chapter when dealing with this problem.

Science News in Pictures

Professor Conway Morris said: “Fermi’s paradox seems to be coming rather sharply into focus. If I’m on the right track then the likelihood of intelligence is evolving and actively engaging in some sort of transgalatic expeditions doesn’t seem to be completely beyond the realm of possibility.

“What Fermi didn’t know when he asked that famous question was that the number of Earth-like planets is absolutely gigantic now. More problematic is that many of these solar systems far, far pre-date our solar system. They would have, in principle, a major head start of hundreds of millions, if not billions, of years.

“The problem is exceedingly acute: we shouldn’t be alone but, famous last words, all the evidence suggests we are. Maybe [aliens] are hiding, the Arthur C Clarke idea, or as Stephen Baxter mischievously suggested we live in a virtual world. I don’t honestly know. My suspicion is we have only begun to scratch at the surface of reality, for want of a better word.”

Professor Conway Morris said one of the main themes of his new book was his desire to “re-energise people and get their sense of curiosity running again”. Convergence is demonstrable at every point of evolutionary history, he argues, from early cells, through to the emergence of tissues, nervous systems, limbs and the ability to make tools.

He said: “There is a growing interest in convergent evolution but I’m always willing to push it as far as I can. I’ll always say ‘show me anything which has only evolved once’ and I’ll try and jump up and say ‘no I can give you another example’.

“Convergence is ubiquitous and if you think complex things are difficult to make, well, with great respect, think again.”

I can't agree aliens would evolve the same as us and look human. There are too many chance events along the evolutionary path. For instance, if dinosaurs were not wiped out would humans be around or would other animals have been favored in their progression?

Maybe that's how the reptilians came about. grin

From the moment of birth we think we are the center of the universe of the reality around us..I am sure they may develop thinking along the same way even if..they don't look the same. I hope they do not look like us..because we would be in real big trouble..

Think about it. If you are millions of years more advanced than us, why would you be in a vulnerable flesh and blood body; white, green, or otherwise? You most likely would truly be a man of steel (or some similar metallic substance. cool

Forgotten scent of roses could be reawakened by scientists

Intensive breeding has wiped out much of the bouquet of modern roses but scientists now believe they could bring it back

By Sarah Knapton, Science Editor
1:25PM BST 03 Jul 2015

It is said that the secret to happiness is remembering to stop and smell the roses.

But that heady scent, once synonymous with an English country garden, has dulled in recent decades as breeders favour longevity and colour over the fragrance of the blooms.

Yet all may not be lost after scientists discovered the enzyme which triggers roses to produce their intoxicating aroma, in a breakthrough which could bring back the scent of summer’s past.

The trick is encouraging the roses to produce greater levels of an organic compound called ‘geraniol’ which is produced in petals and is the key ingredient in rose oil.

Researchers at the University of Lyon have puzzled for more than 15 years about which enzymes are triggering the production of ‘geraniol’ and have now found it is just down to one.

The enzyme - called RhNUDX1 - appears to boost levels of ‘geraniol’ and researchers believe that botanists could be able to genetically engineer forgotten scents back into roses.

Experiments on rose petal proteins in the lab showed that increasing the enzyme upped the levels of ‘geraniol’ in the proteins.

Not only could it make rose bushes and flowers more aromatic, but it could pave the way for more intense perfumes and essential oils.

Dr Jean-Louis Magnard said: “Roses are used as ornamental plants in gardens, as cut flowers and as sources of essential oils for perfume and cosmetics.

“But breeding with a focus on cut flowers and visual attributes can leave scent traits disadvantaged.

“The case for lack of fragrance in these flowers is unknown.

“The intensity of the scent in roses may rely on RhNUDX1 and our finding may provide leverage to restore scent.”

Experts claim that the age of scentless roses began when breeders began mixing China and tea varieties with traditional old English varieties to enhance colours like yellow in the early to mid 20th century.

The white rose 1901 Hybrid Perpetual, Frau Karl Druschki, now has no scent at all.

The American horticultarilist Arthur Bouquet (CORR) claimed that just 50 per cent of today’s roses have a noticeable scent, compared with 75 per cent in the 19th century.

Jonathan Gershenzon, of the Max Planck Institute in Germany, said: “Floral scent is an important trait in ornamental roses that has provided sensual pleasures for humans since antiquity.I

“However, most modern rose cultivars used for cut flowers have little fragrance as a result of breeding preferences for traits such as colour and longevity.

“Restoring scent attributes by breeding or biotechnological means requires a detailed understanding of the biosynthesis of rose scent.”

However getting the most out of the scent of roses may be all in the timing. Sniffing as the first dawn sunlight catches the petals is likely to produce a far stronger bouquet than later in the day.

The research was published in the journal Science.
