Poop Goes Mainstream: Fecal Transplants Get Past the 'Ick'

by Christopher Wanjek
October 21, 2015

In an era of thousand-dollar pills and DNA-altering technologies, doctors are increasingly turning to a seemingly crude technique to treat chronic intestinal problems: poop transplants.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), as it is properly called — and there's no sugarcoating the description here — is the process of placing the feces of a healthy person into the gut of a patient with an intestinal problem, such as chronic diarrhea or irritable bowel syndrome. The transplant occurs via a tube or capsule put down one's throat or up one's bottom.

The theory is that the transplanted stool — upward of 10 teaspoons' worth — introduces a healthy mix of bacteria that can overtake the harmful bacteria causing the intestinal problems. More than 4,000 gut specialists have gathered at the 80th annual meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in Honolulu, Hawaii, and one item on their agenda is discussing the merits of FMT.

UFO the size of a small car seen flying above Cheltenham railway station heading from GCHQ

21 October 2015

A UFO was spotted in Cheltenham yesterday, flying above Cheltenham Spa railway station.

It was seen by a 67-year-old man who drew a picture of what he witnessed.

The man, who describes himself as a professional with a physics degree, said he was on platform one at the station when he spotted the UFO.

He said: "The visibility was perfect (clear blue sky due to high pressure) and there was no surface wind.

"My eye caught a slow moving object in the sky which I initially dismissed as a balloon.

"On second glance I was puzzled by its shape so I started to observe it objectively.

"I would estimate that the object was at a height of between 300 to 500 meters high and about 1000 - 1500 meters distance ,moving at around 15 mph and the size of a small motor car.

"The structure was rigid, solid and did not change shape.

"The object appeared to be moving in a straight line and came from airport / GCHQ direction and heading across town.

"The direction and speed was constant.

" However what really intrigued me was that the object was rotating around its vertical axis at a rate of about 1 rotation every two to three seconds.

"The rate of rotation was constant. There were two very intense (but small) red lights at each extremity of the object.

"They gave the impression that they were flashing but on reflection they were not flashing but due to the rotation of the object gave the appearance of flashing.

"I am unsure of the colour. I got the impression that it was very dark with a hint of deep red but it may have been black.

"I was puzzled as to how the object could move forward in a straight line and be rotating at the same time. There was no noise.

"I attach a very rough sketch of the object - please excuse me for my lack of artistic skills. It was not possible to see the exact shape or any special features so the sketch is only an approximation."

Egypt Lays Out Plan To Scan For Secrets Of The Pyramids With Cosmic Rays

Indiana Jones, eat your heart out: The international project to scan Egypt’s pyramids for hidden chambers, using cosmic rays, is gearing up for its launch this weekend.

The scientists behind the Scan Pyramids effort will install sensitive detectors to map the pyramids’ structure by studying how the cosmic rays that continually zap our planet skitter through the stones. Similar techniques have been used recently to look inside ancient pyramids in Mexico and Belize, as well as the ruined reactors at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear site.

“The survey will be implemented through invasive – though non-destructive – scanning techniques using cosmic rays in cooperation with scientists and experts from Japan, France and Canada,” Egypt’s antiquities minister, Mamdouh Eldamaty, told Ahram Online. Ahram Online and Le Figaro reported that Eldamaty would announce the project’s official launch on Sunday.

Eldamaty told Ahram Online that the first scans would be done at the Bent Pyramid in Dahshur, 25 miles south of Cairo. The 344-foot-high monument was built by Pharaoh Sneferu about 4,600 years ago and is known to contain at least two chambers. However, its interior has not been studied in detail, and some experts suspect additional chambers may lie within.

The more famous pyramids at Giza would also be scanned, Eldamaty said. In the 1960s, physicist Luis Alvarez led a team of scientists who looked for the cosmic-ray signature of hidden chambers in the Pyramid of Chephren (Khafre) at Giza. They found nothing new, but scanning technologies have gone through a quantum leap since then.

Could scientists soon discover a parallel universe? New data from the extra powerful Large Hadron Collider is being analysed
• 'Atom smasher' at Cern, Geneva is turned up to its highest level
• This means it could detect miniature black holes - a sign of a 'multiverse'
• Ongoing experiment at the LHC could shed new light on the universe

It has found the 'God particle', but the Large Hadron Collider could soon detect a 'parallel universe'.

The 'atom smasher' at Cern in Geneva is now operating at its highest level in a bid to detect miniature black holes, which are considered a key sign of a 'multiverse'. And data collected since June is now being analysed.

The experiment may alarm critics who fear the LHC could bring about the end of the world, but scientists say the ground-breaking experiment could transform our understanding of the universe.

'Just as many parallel sheets of paper, which are two dimensional objects (breath and length) can exist in a third dimension (height), parallel universes can also exist in higher dimensions' Cern employee Mir Faizal from the University of Waterloo told Dailymail.com.

'We predict that gravity can leak into extra dimensions, and if it does, then miniature black holes can be produced at the LHC.'

He said: 'Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualised.

'This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science. 'This is not what we mean by parallel universes. 'What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions,' ZME Science reported.

In March, Professor Faizal and his team calculated the energy at which they expect to detect mini black holes in gravity's rainbow.

'If we do detect mini black holes at this energy, then we will know that both gravity's rainbow and extra dimensions are correct,' he explained.

Since June, the energy with which the LHC smashes particles together is twice what it was during the time when it made the discovery of the Higgs boson, making the detection of small black holes possible for the first time.

Billions of particles flying off from each LHC collision are tracked at Cern detectors to establish when and how they come together and what shapes they take.

The Cern theoreticians say this could give clear signs of dimensions beyond length, breadth, depth and time.
At such high energy gravity many be even tracked disappearing into them.

Parallel universes can exist within these dimensions, the theory goes, but only gravity can leave our universe into these extra dimensions.

If extra dimensions do exist, experts believe they would lower the energy required to produce black holes.

Professor Faizal said in March that the reason these black holes have yet to be detected is because our current model of gravity gets modified at very high energies.

According to Phys.org, in the latest study, the new theory of gravity's rainbow has been used to account for why the LHC has not yet found tiny black holes. Einstein's theory of relativity states that gravity is caused by space and time curving.

Gravity's rainbow says that space and time curve differently for particles of different energy. So, gravity's rainbow suggests that gravity's effect on the cosmos causes different wavelengths of light to behave differently. This means that particles with different energies will move in space-times and gravitational fields differently.

The new theory of gravity's rainbow (illustrated) has been used to account for why the LHC has not yet found tiny black holes. Einstein's theory of relativity states that gravity is caused by space and time curving. Gravity's rainbow says that space and time curve differently for particles of different energy.

Using gravity's rainbow, the scientists found that more energy is required to detect mini black holes at the LHC than previously thought.

Before June the LHC has searched for mini black holes at energy levels below 5.3 TeV. But the study said says this is too low. It predicts that black holes may form at energy levels of at least 9.5 TeV in six dimensions and 11.9 TeV in 10 dimensions so they could potentially be detected now the LHC is running at 13TeV.

If mini black holes are detected at the LHC at the predicted energies, it prove the existence of extra dimensions and by extension parallel universes, said Ahmed Farag Ali from Florida State University.

Mohammed Khalil told Phys.org: 'If black holes are not detected at the predicted energy levels, this would mean one of three possibilities: 'One, extra dimensions do not exist. Two, they exist, but they are smaller than expected. Or three, the parameters of gravity's rainbow need to be modified.'

UFOs 'buzz' city of Ulan-Ude with residents seeing 'very big saucer with bright green lights'

By Olga Gertcyk
23 October 2015

The latest unidentified flying objects in the capital of Buryatia have had the social media buzzing in recent days. A woman reported seeing a 'glowing' entity in the sky above Ulan-Ude with 'a lot of green lights, some red and blue'. She watched with her son and male two passers-by as the mysterious object disappeared and then reappeared 'very close', making a noise like the engine of a car, she claimed.

The men at first claimed it might be a toy plane or drone. 'When it stopped right above us, I could not say a word and saw the two men running to hide in a building,' said the woman. 'It was a very large saucer with bright green lights in the middle. My son got scared, grabbed my hand and we ran away. I never believed that something like that could exist.'

The account has similarities to a report from Listvyanka on the Lake Baikal shore in July 2010. On this occasion, a picture taken by Nikita Tomin showed three green-shaded lights on a 'UFO' flying above the resort in Irkutsk region. 'It flew right above us, very low. The object was shining down on us with a green light. We were a bit scared,' he said.

Another Ulan-Ude resident recently reported regularly seeing a bright glowing object from a balcony in the middle of the night, while someone else reported seeing red lights in the sky which appear then disappear.

Meanwhile in Khorinsk village, some 165 kilometres east of the city, a 35 year old man reported this week: 'I saw this with my own eyes. At about 7pm I went outside for a smoke, and noticed a glowing ball in the sky, very bright. It wasn't moving too fast. At first I thought it was another satellite, but when my eyes gradually got used to the dark, I estimated the distance between the ground and the ball, it was about 200-300 metres.

'It definitely wasn't a satellite. It was moving differently. The lights were gradually getting less bright and it was glowing red. I didn't hear a sound, it's very quiet where I live. There are no cars. I was standing silently and couldn't understand what was it. I observed it for 20-30 seconds. So scary. What could it be?'

Earlier in October, residents of Ulan-Ude noticed unusual circles above the city, close to the LVRZ factory, a repeat of a daytime appearance of these rings in December 2014.
