A Christmas Miracle

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/dec/24/-sp-letter-extraordinary-sights-christmas-day-first-world-war-truce

It was penned 100 years ago in the freezing trenches of the western front; a letter from a British army officer to his mother describing in vivid detail the extraordinary Christmas truce as soldiers from both sides laid down their weapons.

Second Lt Alfred Dougan Chater, of the 2nd Gordon Highlanders, writes of the moment when the men met in no-man’s land, exchanging souvenirs and cigars as impromptu truces were held along parts of the front between Christmas and New Year, with joint burial parties for the dead.

The letter has been reproduced by the Royal Mail, with permission from the Chater family, to mark the anniversary of the historic truce and the role played by the postal service during the first world war.

Dated Christmas Day and signed “Dougan”, the letter reads: “Dearest Mother, I am writing this in the trenches in my ‘dug out’ – with a wood fire going and plenty of straw it is rather cosy, although it is freezing hard and real Christmas weather.

“I think I have seen today one of the most extraordinary sights that anyone has ever seen. About 10 o’clock this morning I was peeping over the parapet when I saw a German, waving his arms, and presently two of them got out of their trench and came towards ours.

“We were just going to fire on them when we saw they had no rifles, so one of our men went to meet them and in about two minutes the ground between the two lines of trenches was swarming with men and officers of both sides, shaking hands and wishing each other a happy Christmas.
Alfred Dougan Chater's letter describes the moment soldiers on both sides left the trenches and met at no-man's land, where they exchanged souvenirs and cigars.

“This continued for about half an hour when most of the men were ordered back to the trenches. For the rest of the day nobody has fired a shot and the men have been wandering about at will on the top of the parapet and carrying straw and firewood about in the open – we have also had joint burial parties with a service for some dead, some German and some ours, who were lying out between the lines.”

He writes of shaking hands himself with several of the German officers and subsequently describes another “parley with the Germans in the middle” where cigarettes and autographs were exchanged and “some more people took photos”.

“I don’t know how long it will go on for – I believe it was supposed to stop yesterday, but we can hear no firing going on along the front today except a little distant shelling. We are, at any rate, having another truce on New Year’s Day, as the Germans want to see how the photos come out!”

The letter paints a picture of seasonal goodwill amid “a war in which there is so much bitterness and ill feeling”.

So I bought my ...
You even mess with my children
And you're screamin' at my wife, baby
Get off my back,
if you wanna get outta here alive

Freedom, give it to me
That's what I want now
Freedom, that's what I need now
Freedom to live
Freedom, so I can give

You got my heart

You got my soul
screamin' and howlin'
You know you hook my girlfriend
You know the drugstore man
But I don't need it now
I was trying to slap it out of her head

Freedom, so I can give
Freedom, yeah
Freedom, that's what I need

You don't have to say that you love

You'd better believe
If you need me

Stay up and straight ahead

George Clayton Johnson, Writer of First ‘Star Trek’ Episode, Dies at 86

25 December 2015

by Dave McNary

George Clayton Johnson, who wrote the script for the first “Star Trek” episode to air and co-wrote “Logan’s Run,” died Friday, Dec. 25 in the Los Angeles area following a battle with cancer, according to his son, Paul Johnson. He was 86.

He was born in Cheyenne, Wyo., in 1929. He broke into the entertainment business in 1959 when he wrote the “I’ll Take Care of You” episode for “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.”

Johnson was a member of the Southern California School of Writers, which included Theodore Sturgeon, William F. Nolan, Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson and Ray Bradbury. He met “Twilight Zone” producer Rod Serling through them and would go on to write eight episodes for the seminal sci-fi series including “Nothing in the Dark,” “Kick the Can,” “A Game of Pool” and “A Penny for Your Thoughts.”

Johnson sold a short story that would serve as the basis for Frank Sinatra’s 1960 movie “Ocean’s 11” and the George Clooney-Brad Pitt reboot in 2001. He also wrote episodes for “Route 66,” “The Law and Mrs. Jones” and “Kung Fu.”

With William F. Nolan, he wrote the dystopian novel “Logan’s Run,” in which people are executed at the age of 21 and which served as the basis for the 1976 film. He wrote the adapted script for “The Intruder,” the 1962 movie directed by Roger Corman, based on the novel by his friend Charles Beaumont. Both appear in the movie along with William F. Nolan.

His script “The Man Trap” was the basis for the first “Star Trek” episode, which aired on Sept. 8, 1966. It centered on salt-hungry creature who terrorized the crew of the USS Enterprise.

Johnson was a longtime advocate for the legalization of marijuana and in his later years wrote comic books and was a frequent guest at sci-fi and comics conventions. He co-created the comic book series “Deepest Dimension Terror Anthology” with cartoonist and author Jay Allen Sanford.

“He had a special place in his heart for all of his fans, who sustained him and gave him a forum to share thoughts at a million miles a second,” his son said.

In a 2003 interview for the Archive of American Television, Johnson said, “I want to be remembered as a person who early on in his life took control of his life and set goals. When people gave me a lined paper, I wrote the other way. When people expect some certain behavior from me, I will frustrate their expectations.”

He is survived by his wife, Lola Johnson, a daughter, Judy Olive, a son, Paul B. Johnson and a half-sister.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this obituary gave the wrong date of death. Johnson died Dec. 25, 2015.

Some more to consider.

Did the 1914 Christmas Truce Really Happen?

How true are the stories of WWI soldiers laying aside their rifles on Christmas 1914?

by Brian Dunning
Skeptoid Podcast #498
.........The 1914 Christmas Truce was not a moment where soldiers laid their weapons aside and let their humanity triumph over their orders. Modern popular tellings of the tale giving it that characterization do it a disservice; they portray it merely as a heartwarming anecdote. It was much more. It was the peak of a great wave of native humanitarianism, a rejection of a war thrust upon men who had no part in it. It was what might have been, and what can always be, wherever men follow their hearts.........

But the event did happen. We all are aware that embellishments happen..such as some reporting a futball game..but the letters are clear and Dunning acknowledges that. The core story is true..
Its no small anecdote or just hearsay..while those with moral appeal clamored for at least a moment of of peace.
Compounding the British and German soldiers' already-existing proclivity for mutual non-aggression were a number of high-profile international calls for a truce, especially for a Christmas truce. None of these carried more weight than that of Pope Benedict XV, perhaps the world's most influential and most active opponent throughout the war he described as "the suicide of civilized Europe." In December, he made a special plea to all the nations involved "that the guns may fall silent at least upon the night the angels sang."

.their voices went unanswered..

save for the men in these trenches..who shared similar cultures...which.. the author states as one reason why it ever happened..and yet he falls back on the overriding message which these men..certainly understood..futility..meaningless of war ..a message lost on the next war which cemented the platform for all future wars..The author assumes we didn't get it..but indeed we did,
iMo he simply reinforced the story rather than took anything away..certainly a small miracle that may be one of many not reported or just downplayed..

case in point

it's proof to the rest of us that something great done now can change your life much, much later.

From 1990 to 2008, Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler became like brothers. Introduced by the bond of that first powerful meeting, their friendship was cemented over the years. The two men remained close throughout the rest of their lives, dying within several months of each other in 2008.

There are so many parts of that beautiful story that could have turned out differently. In any event, Stigler probably wouldn't have shot Brown's crippled plane. He was a veteran pilot with an iron sense of right and wrong; a man who would never kick another while he's down.

But what if Stigler had been executed for his disloyalty? What if Brown had landed in Germany or hadn't made it across the North Sea? What if Stigler had stayed in Germany and never learned how to speak English? Yes, things could have been different, but that chance encounter in 1943 was destined to become a chance encounter again in 1990. But more importantly, it's proof to the rest of us that something great done now can change your life much, much later.

MERRY MERRY HAPPY HAPPY!

Daily Mail

Did the assassin who killed the al-Hilli family strike before? Retired detective believes same gunman was behind murder of British couple 26 years earlier.

27 December 2015

French police investigating the al-Hilli murders have been asked to look into the whereabouts and alibi of a man suspected to have carried out a near-identical crime 26 years earlier.

Retired detective Pascale Huche claims the killing of Britons Lorraine Glasby, 28, and Paul Bellion, 29, in Brittany in 1986, bears remarkable similarity to that of Saad al-Hilli, 50, and his family.

The Iraqi businessman, who lived in Surrey, was killed alongside his wife Iqbal and mother-in-law Suhaila when they were gunned down in their car in the French Alps in September 2012.

His two young daughters survived, while cyclist Sylvain Mollier, 45, was also found dead nearby, prompting speculation the rider had been killed after stumbling across the execution-style killings.

The Daily Telegraph reports Mr Huche has passed on the name of the 1986 double-murder suspect to French investigators working the al-Hilli case.
