Could Some “Ghost Lights” be Linked to Mystery Booms?

March 31, 2016
by Micah Hanks

This year, like many previous years, has seen much ado about the so-called “mystery boom” phenomenon, with reports of loud bangs and crashes stemming from areas that, for those who keep up with this sort of thing, might be considered “the usual suspects.” Particularly, the Northeastern United States has been home to much of the recent spattering of boom reports, while areas of southern California also remain tried and true favorites.

One might note here, of course, that Mother Lode, in the heart of California’s “Gold Country”, had been the location where seismic scientists managed to determine last year that many of the “booms” are the result of refraction of explosions carried out at a munitions site several miles away, which bounce off the atmosphere and are carried a great distance. Hence, in addition to the geological theories about the cause of “mystery booms”, there are some instances where meteorological, and other causes are the principle underlying factors.

To my great intrigue, the latest of the so-called “mystery boom” reports occurred right in my own home county in Western North Carolina. Due to the location from which most of the reports are coming, which had been the North Asheville and Weaverville areas of Buncombe County, NC, my preliminary guess had been that this “booming” sound was of seismic origin. A number of years ago, a mild tremor in this exact same area had made local headlines, and while few reports of tremors seem to exist this time around, some shallow earthquakes can result in loud booms, even in the absence of noticeable seismic activity like tremors.

Of equal intrigue, just two years ago researchers Robert Theriault and John Derr noted the presence of “earthquake lights” in conjunction with some seismic activity; namely, that reports of illuminations in the Linville Gorge wilderness and the adjacent Brown Mountain area, popularly known as the “Brown Mountain Lights”, are prone to appear in conjunction with seismic activity along the Brevard fault zone.

However, some in the scientific community (as well as this writer and devoted amateur) have looked at this possible connection with a degree of skepticism, in that reports of the Linville illuminations (possibly natural plasmas or “earth light” phenomenon similar to ball lightning) sometimes occur weeks, or even months before or after the seismic activities that researchers like Theriault and Derr have attempted to draw correlations between. Although strange illuminative phenomena does occur in conjunction with some earthquakes, it seems difficult to determine whether any conclusive link between the so-called Brown Mountain Lights, and minor earthquakes along the Brevard fault zone, have any distinct relationship.

Then again, on the outside chance that anything correlative in nature does “come to light” (pun intended), perhaps it would be wise to keep an ear to the ground after all. It very well may be that there could be some correlations yet to emerge between various earthlight phenomena — some of which may already be supported by scientific literature — and the seemingly mysterious “booms” that are possibly seismic in origin.

Ex-law student's alleged illegal maneuver could land him in prison

Published March 31, 2016

A Massachusetts law student whose future career went up in smoke after he stole a laptop made things far worse with an illegal maneuver that could land him in prison for 20 years, according to prosecutors.

Daniel Scher, 33, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to perjury and tampering with a court document after being charged with swapping out his “guilty” verdict slip in his case file, according to a news release from Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley.

Scher was convicted of larceny in 2014 after stealing the computer from Suffolk University Law School. He got three months in jail and a suspended sentence, but the school refused to grant him a law degree, according to a statement issued by Conley’s office.

Scher later went to the Boston Municipal Court clerk’s office, asked to see his case file, and then swapped a “not guilty” verdict slip in for the one that pronounced him guilty, according to Assistant Suffolk District Attorney Greer Spatz.

The verdict slip provided to the jury in Scher’s larceny case had two spaces, one for “guilty” and one for “not guilty.” Following jury deliberations, the jury foreperson marked the box for guilty, and the trial judge and clerk reviewed it and it was read into the record.

Following the conviction, Scher allegedly returned to the court clerk’s office on several occasions. During one of those visits, prosecutors say, he removed the verdict slip from his file and made a copy that he altered to reflect a verdict of not guilty. He later used the forged verdict slip in various proceedings, according to Conley.

On July 22, 2014, Scher was arraigned in Brighton Municipal Court on charges of operating a motor vehicle without insurance and leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage, prompting a hearing to determine whether he had violated the terms of his suspended sentence for the larceny conviction.

Scher’s attorney for that hearing presented the forged jury slip to cast doubt on the larceny conviction. Five months later, Scher allegedly filed a complaint with the state Department of Criminal Justice Information Services in which he claimed that the verdict at his trial was not guilty and that he had notified the court of the alleged error.

And last year, an attorney retained by Scher emailed Suffolk University Law School, which had denied Scher a diploma and status in light of the theft and conviction pending a final hearing.

“I am attaching a copy of the verdict form that indicates ‘Not Guilty,’” the attorney wrote in the email, which was accompanied by a scanned copy of the forged slip.

Not a new idea and some have been working on this model for many years now including Persinger who focused on balls of light related to tectonic plate strain as being sources of some ufo lights....there have been other studies but I'm too lazy to look them up.

White House Scrubs Translation of French President Saying ‘Islamist Terrorism’
White House staffers appear to have scrubbed the mention of “Islamist terrorism” from a video of a speech delivered by French President Francois Hollande at a bilateral meeting with President Obama.

According to the White House translation of Francois’ speech, he said the following:

We are also making sure that between Europe and the United States there can be a very high level coordination. But we’re also well aware that the roots of terrorism, Islamist terrorism, is in Syria and in Iraq. We, therefore, have to act both in Syria and in Iraq, and this is what we’re doing within the framework of the coalition. And we note that Daesh is losing ground, thanks to the strikes we’ve been able to launch with the coalition.

But in the White House video, the translated portion of his remarks about Islamist terrorism is muted, starting at 4:48 in this video, according to a report posted by the

Immigration Activists Force Library Of Congress To Delete Illegal Alien in Searches
The decision comes on the heels of a year and a half of lobbying efforts which originated here in the Dartmouth College Library. Research and Instruction Services librarians Amy Witzel and Jill Baron had worked closely with the campus student group CoFIRED (Coalition for Immigration Reform, Equality, and DREAMers), who expressed strong concerns about the use of the term “Illegal aliens” in library catalogs and other discovery tools. Amy, Jill and I prepared the necessary documentation to make a formal petition (through our Library’s membership in the SACO program) to the Library of Congress to change the subject heading. After months of deliberation, the Library of Congress denied our petition on the grounds that Dartmouth’s proposed replacement heading (Undocumented immigrants) was problematic in the context of their internal terminology.

At the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting in Boston in January of this year, one of my colleagues on ALA’s Subject Analysis Committee continued to pursue the issue of removing the subject heading Illegal aliens within various components of ALA and succeeded in bringing the matter before ALA Council as a resolution. ALA Council overwhelmingly passed this resolution, urging the Library of Congress to replace this subject heading.

In February of this year, the Library of Congress again considered the request, this time at a much higher administrative level, and agreed to remove the heading Illegal aliens and replace it with two new headings: Noncitizens and Unauthorized immigration. It should be noted that it is extremely rare for the Library of Congress to make changes to its subject headings based on community pressure.

This decision represents a great victory not only for the Dartmouth students who initiated the process, but for all undocumented library users in the United States and those who champion their rights and dignity.
