UK's Agent Mulder examines The Telegraph's X files

A former MOD expert looks over four recent films claiming to show UFOs. Examine the video evidence yourself too.

6:00AM BST 29 Jun 2011

Nick Pope was employed by the Ministry of Defence to investigate alien abduction and sightings as part of their now defunct UFO Project.

Over more than 20 years, he had to analyse hundreds of possible sightings and encounters to decide whether they had any merit or were a threat to Britain's "territorial integrity".

Now he is casting his expert eye over some of the most intriguing films featured on telegraph.co.uk to test their authenticity.

You can watch the videos too, by clicking the relevant square at the bottom of the screen.

As part of his tour to promote the Hollywood film Battle:Los Angeles, which is released in the UK on DVD and Blue-ray on the 11th July, he examined filmed evidence of visitations from other worlds from London, Sao Paulo, Jerusalem and Moscow. The truth, as they say, is out there.

MYSTERY: Symbol of an Alien Sky, Man-Made or Natural Phenomena - UFO, Star Gate, Ballistic Missile, Exploding Ball Seen Over Hawaii?!

User Image

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCfW1vNjZp8&feature=player_embedded

Footage of this incredible bubble-like burst of light in the night sky was captured by cameras at an astronomical observatory in Hawaii. Sky watchers have been flooding internet forums with speculation about the burst, filmed by a webcam mounted on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea.

Captured in time-lapse footage, the glowing sphere takes several minutes to expand until it virtually fills the frame - then it vanishes as mysteriously as it appeared.

Theories as to the cause of the mysterious luminous sphere have ranged from the opening of an inter-dimensional portal to the future to a battle between two alien starships. But the most likely explanation is that is shows a U.S. Minuteman III inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM), ejecting fuel as it enters the upper reaches of the Earth's atmosphere.

The time-lapse footage shows the night horizon filled with stars, when suddenly an ethereal arc pops into view. It rapidly expands, forming a circular shell which grows as it travels across the horizon, then fades as it fills the view. According to Discover Magazine's Bad Astronomy blog, the soap bubble-like characteristics of the light burst indicate that it has been caused by a 'sudden impulse of energy and rapid expansion of material'.

Citing online astronomy forums, Bad Astronomy reveals that a Minuteman III ICBM had been scheduled to launch from Vandenburg Air Force Base, California, three minutes before the burst was observed, at about 3:35am Hawaii time. The stars of the Cassiopeia constellation are visible in the horizon behind the burst, indicating that the webcam was pointed north-east - towards the base and the missile's probable flight path.

Again citing internet forums, the blog speculates the burst could have caused by charges in the missile's third stage detonating to kill its thrust as it arcs across the Earth. At a pre-determined moment, ports in the side of this section of the missile are blown open by explosive charges, allowing remaining fuel to be dumped fast. This rapid fuel dump cuts the missile's thrust at precisely the right time allowing the warhead to be targeted with devastating accuracy at the right spot back on the surface of the Earth.

As the missile is above most of the Earth's atmosphere at this point, when the fuel gas is suddenly ejected it blows away from the missile in a perfect sphere - which could explain the bubble-like characteristics of the light. For this explanation, the timing seems to be right. However, it is only a theory and there has not yet been any official confirmation of the claims.

U.S. military sees Iran behind rising troop deaths in Iraq

By Tim Craig and Ed O’Keefe, Published: June 29

BAGHDAD — Three U.S. soldiers were killed this week in a rocket attack at a U.S. base near the Iranian border, the military said Thursday, bringing June’s death toll to 15 and marking the bloodiest month for U.S. troops in Iraq in two years.

U.S. military commanders have said in recent months that they feared such an increase in violence would accompany the planned withdrawal of most American troops by the end of the year. Military officials in Baghdad and at the Pentagon blamed the mounting death toll on the growing sophistication of weapons that insurgents and Iranian-backed militia groups are using, including powerful rockets, armor-piercing grenades and jam-resistant roadside bombs suspected of coming from Iran.

The heightened danger underscores the volatile security situation in Iraq, amid ongoing debate here and in Washington about whether any U.S. troops should remain in the country.

June’s death toll was the highest since 15 troops died here in June 2009, according to iCasualties.org, a Web site that tracks U.S. military deaths. Fourteen of the deaths were combat-related, the highest since 23 soldiers and Marines were killed in action in June 2008, the site said.

During much of the insurgency that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, U.S. military commanders blamed Sunni-dominated terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda in Iraq for many of the attacks against American troops. But as the U.S. military has adjusted its tactics, largely withdrawing from cities and improving its technological capacity to combat deadly roadside bombs and suicide attacks, officials say it has become far harder for loosely organized Sunni militias to strike out against the roughly 46,000 U.S. troops in the country.

Now, according to Maj. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, chief spokesman for the U.S. military in Iraq, the primary threat to the Americans comes from three Shiite militia groups operating in Iraq, which officials said they believe are being trained and equipped by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps special forces.

“All of them receive at least indirect support from elements in Iran,” Buchanan said in an interview this week.

In early June, what U.S. officials believe was a sophisticated rocket slammed into a joint Iraqi-U.S. military base in eastern Baghdad, killing six American soldiers in the deadliest single attack on forces here in more than two years. In addition, three U.S. troops were killed by roadside bombs in June.

Last week, an American contractor for the U.S. Agency for International Development was killed when suspected Shiite militants attached a bomb to a car he was riding in near a Baghdad university. And Sunday, two U.S. troops were killed when an apparent armor-piercing grenade was lobbed at their vehicle.

Although the U.S. military did not release specifics on Wednesday’s attack pending notification of next of kin, officials familiar with the incident said the rocket was so powerful that it also wounded more than a dozen soldiers, several critically.

There was no immediate assertion of responsibility for that attack. However, Kataib Hezbollah, one of the Shiite militia groups mentioned by Buchanan, said earlier last month that it was responsible for the attack that killed six soldiers.

Buchanan said there is “no doubt” that Kataib Hezbollah “follows orders” from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’s Quds Force, a highly specialized unit responsible for operations outside Iran. “Their leadership lives in Iran, they are directly trained by the Quds Force and they are supplied by them,” Buchanan said.

In an interview with Bloomberg News, outgoing Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates expressed similar frustration with Iran’s ties to the Shiite militias operating in Iraq. Iran is “facilitating weapons, they’re facilitating training, there’s new technology that they are providing,” Gates said. “They’re stepping this up, and it’s a concern.”

Buchanan said efforts to protect U.S. forces in Iraq are further complicated by rival Shiite militias that are vying to emerge as the dominant Shiite insurgency group in Iraq.

LA Times

Case against Strauss-Kahn may be crumbling

Questions arise about the credibility of the New York hotel maid who accuses the former IMF chief of sexual assault.

Times Staff and Wire Reports
July 1, 2011

The sexual assault case in New York against former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was in trouble Thursday night after questions surfaced about the believability of his alleged victim.

Strauss-Kahn's 32-year-old accuser was said to have lied repeatedly and prosecutors have come to question her credibility, even though forensic tests found evidence of a sexual encounter, the New York Times reported, quoting what it said were two well-placed law enforcement officials.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers met with prosecutors Thursday to discuss whether to dismiss the felony charges stemming from the French politician's May 14 encounter with the Guinea-born housekeeper at the Sofitel Hotel in Manhattan, the newspaper said. It described the case as being "on the verge of collapse."

Strauss-Kahn's bail is expected to be substantially reduced at a hearing Friday because of the issue of the accuser's credibility, the Associated Press reported, citing an unnamed person familiar with the case.

The issue was not necessarily about the attempted rape accusation itself, but about questions surrounding the woman's background that could damage her credibility on the witness stand, the Associated Press reported, citing a separate, unnamed law enforcement official who refused to elaborate.

Strauss-Kahn lawyer William W. Taylor would say only that the hearing was to review the bail plan. The Manhattan district attorney's office declined to comment.

A collapse of the case would mark a stunning turnabout for Strauss-Kahn, 62, who has long been a key player in the French Socialist Party and was expected to challenge French President Nicolas Sarkozy in next May's election. Polls suggested he would win. He resigned his IMF post after the arrest.

The woman told police that Strauss-Kahn chased her down a hallway in his $3,000-a-night suite, tried to pull down her pantyhose and forced her to perform oral sex before she broke free.

Strauss-Kahn denies the allegations. His lawyers have said the encounter wasn't forcible, and that they have unreleased information that could "gravely undermine the credibility" of the housekeeper. Her lawyer has said she is prepared to testify despite a "smear campaign" against her.

Strauss-Kahn has been under armed guard in a Manhattan townhouse after posting a total of $6 million in cash bail and bond. His wife, Anne Sinclair, a wealthy heiress and former French television star, declared from the beginning that she would stand by him and "did not believe for one minute" the accusations against him.

French newspapers swiftly picked up the New York Times report Friday morning. The news agency Agence France-Presse described the development as a coup de theatre — a dramatic turn.

Special correspondent Kim Willsher in Paris contributed to this report.

Jeff Ellis, who lives in Oregon, tells KPTV he was trying to sleep on an overnight Alaska Airlines flight June 17 when he felt something in his sleeve and tried to brush it away.

He says he felt the crawling again, looked down and saw the culprit. "I picked my hand up and said, 'Oh, my God. That's a scorpion."'

Ellis says he grabbed the scorpion with a napkin, but not before it stung him on the elbow. He says it caused a burning sensation.

Ellis was checked by two doctors on board and medics on the ground.

The flight originated from Austin, Texas, where Alaska Airlines officials believe the scorpion got on board. Ellis says the airline offered him some frequent-flyer miles and two round-trip tickets.

Megafires May Change the Southwest Forever

The plants and animals of the southwestern United States are adapted to fire, but not to the sort of super-sized, super-intense fires now raging in Arizona.

The product of drought and human mismanagement, these so-called megafires may change the southwest’s ecology. Mountainside Ponderosa forests could be erased, possibly forever. Fire may become the latest way in which people are profoundly altering modern landscapes.

“If a few acres burn, a forest can recover. But at really large scales, the opportunity to recover is limited,” said forest ecologist Dan Binkley of Colorado State University. “The large-scale devastation has taken away the ecological future.”

Fire itself is not rare in the southwest. It’s a constant feature, not at all distressing, a fact obscured by the tendency of local news stations to seize upon dramatic footage of every flame-encroached house.

But fires like the ongoing Wallow fire, already the largest in Arizona’s recorded history, and the record fires seen in Texas in April, are fairly unusual. They used to happen every few centuries, but now seem to happen every few years.

That’s partly because of a severe ongoing drought, but also because people have spent the last century trying to protect settled areas by putting out every small fire. That allows shrubs to grow, needles and twigs to gather on the ground, and low-hanging branches to spread. The southwestern region known as the Sky Islands, where tree-covered mountain ranges rise from desert valleys, has become a series of tinderboxes.

To show how fire traditionally behaved, fire ecologist Don Falk of the University of Arizona pointed to the Miller fire, a blaze that started in May in the Gila National Forest. Because the region is so sparsely settled, forest managers have historically allowed burns to run their course. The latest fire covered 90,000 acres, but it wasn’t intense. Animals could escape and completely defoliated areas were small.

“Ecologically, this is the way fire almost always used to behave in the U.S. southwest,” said Falk. “It never looked like Horseshoe.”

The Horseshoe fire also started in May, in the Coronado National Forest. With more people living nearby, forest managers there have historically contained and prevented fires. This time it couldn’t be controlled. The character of the fire was evident not just in size, but intensity: Burn maps show many areas of bright red severity.

At very high elevations, that’s not a problem, said Falk. Because a cooler, wetter climate makes it hard for small fires to start in those areas, history shows that rare but serious fires are the norm. At lower and middle elevations, however, large areas of severe burning are an aberration.

“We can use old tree ring analyses to see when fires started. We don’t see tens or hundreds of thousands of acres of high-severity burns,” said Falk. “The patches are bigger now. And patch size matters because large patches are immediately prone to erosion.”

A small burned patch will soon regrow, as seeds arrive via breeze and bird. But if severely burned patch is thousands of acres across, it can take years for seeds to reach the center, said Falk. In the meantime, soil will blow away. Drought conditions also affect the type of plants that will regrow.

“The sorts of plants that thrive during droughts are different than those that survive in normal times,” said Falk. For at least the next few centuries, if not millenniums, towering Ponderosa forests will not come back. Instead there will be pine and Gambel oak and New Mexico locust trees. “It will convert to a more shrubby ecosystem. The system will have gone past the tipping point.”

To prevent all this, people need to strike a balance with fire, said Falk. “We have to let fire back into the system. Right now, we’re excluding an essential part of how these ecosystems work,” he said. “Fire is not something that happens to ecosystems. It’s not like a hurricane or tornado or earthquake. It’s something they do. When you exclude it from the system, you’ll pay the price later.”

Francis Ford Coppola Headed To Comic-Con
By THE DEADLINE TEAM
Thursday June 30, 2011 @ 4:47pm PDT
Tags: Comic-Con, Comic-Con Panel, Comic-Con Schedule, Francis Ford Coppola, Twixt

Francis Ford Coppola, who last participated in Comic-Con to tout his 1992 film Bram Stoker's Dracula, is returning to the annual convention next month to discuss another horror project -- his new film Twixt. The director will present portions of the experimental film he calls “one part Gothic romance, one part personal film, and one part the kind of horror film that began my career" on Saturday, July 23 in Hall H. (Of course, that career-beginning film was Dementia 13.)

The film, which stars Val Kilmer, Elle Fanning and Ben Chaplin, incorporates live music by performance artist Dan Deacon, who will attend the panel to help demonstrate the viewing experience.

Planes Make Rain That Wets Airport Terrain

Published July 01, 2011
| Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Airplanes flying through super-cooled clouds around airports can cause condensation that results in more snow and rain nearby, according to a new study.

The correct conditions for this inadvertent weather modification occur about 5 percent of the time -- but 10-to-15 percent in winter -- according to Andrew J. Heymsfield of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., lead author of the study appearing in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

Aircraft take off into the wind, he noted, so if they are generating extra ice particles upwind of an airport, the result can be snow right on the airport. That might mean planes will require more de-icing, he said, though other researchers weren't so sure.

The team was investigating holes or canals that are sometimes seen drilled in clouds after an airplane has passed through.

Studying six commercial airports, they found that increased snow and rainfall occurs in areas where the unusual cloud holes appear, usually within 60 miles of the airport. Places farther away from an airport are more likely to be at higher altitudes, above the clouds.

The added rain or snowfall occurred when conditions in the clouds were super-cooled. That means the clouds were made up of water droplets that were colder than freezing, but which had not yet frozen.

Water in the atmosphere can remain liquid at temperatures below freezing if it doesn't have any type of nucleus to freeze onto, such as bits of dust or salt. It will freeze without a nucleus when it gets very cold, however -- about minus 40 degrees.

It turns out, when an airplane passes through one of these clouds the movement of air around the tips of the propeller, or over the wings of a jet, causes a sudden cooling of the air, sometimes down to the critical point where the droplets freeze. They then can fall to earth as snow or rain, depending on whether or not the air is warm enough to melt them on the way down.

But that still did not explain why the holes and canals can be so wide, much larger than the narrow airplane passing through the clouds.

So they used a computer model to study what was happening, and found that heat released when the water freezes warms the air around it, causing the air to move upward at the center of the hole and spreading out to move downward at the edges.

Airports studied by Heymsfield's team were London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris Charles De Gaulle, Seattle-Tacoma, Chicago O'Hare and Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada; plus Byrd Station in Antarctica.

'White House press briefing' on Roswell: National security, public safety, scientific understanding

Steve Hammons
June 23, 2011

(This article appears on the Transcendent TV & Media site. A previous version of this article originally appeared on the Joint Recon Study Group site.)

The recently-published book about Area 51 brings the so-called Roswell incident to the public mind once again.

It's a fascinating tale: A post-World War II U.S. Army Air Forces air field in Roswell, New Mexico, is alerted to something unusual in the summer of 1947. A local rancher far outside of town found his land littered with very odd materials.

The county sheriff and possibly the local fire department are also aware of this general situation. A local radio station also gets wind of it.

The base intelligence officer and possibly other intelligence personnel go out to the rural area where the material has been found.

They find something very surprising.

COMPLEX AND SENSITIVE

It is undoubtedly a complex and sensitive matter. According to some reports, past U.S. presidents have received only limited briefings on the subject. Presidents don't always have a "need to know."

Likewise, there is a view that the general public does not have a need to know. In fact, some elements of the situation could be troubling for the public. In addition, there is probably much that the U.S. government and other governments internationally do not know or do not fully understand.

As a result, there may be a legitimate view that it is best if a formal statement on the status of the UFO situation does not occur and that people inquire and discover information about this subject on their own.

Of course, movies and TV, books and articles, and other kinds of media platforms often serve to inform us and get us thinking about the possibilities involved.

This "grassroots" kind of emerging awareness might have significant advantages over a "top-down" announcement from government officials. That said, recent releases of reports and documents by various international governments have been interesting and informative.

When dealing with such an unconventional situation, maybe the standard kinds of governmental public statements are not the most effective and appropriate means to communicate with the public. It might be very challenging for any president or his administration to handle such a delicate, complex and important task.

WHITE HOUSE MEDIA BRIEFING 2011

Wouldn't it be interesting if the White House made the following announcement? The White House press secretary starts what seems to be a routine briefing:

"Good morning. You know, we get inquiries from Americans on many kinds of topics, and we try to be as responsive and open as possible."

"As you are aware, this administration is interested in government transparency and being as straightforward with the American people as we can be, while respecting the need for discretion at times."

"One of the interesting subjects that some Americans ask about is the topic of UFOs and what the U.S. government might know about them. We want to try to address this question to the best of our ability, but you should consider my comments today as a preliminary introduction, with more follow-up at a later time."

"In the summer of 1947, something crashed in the region near Roswell, New Mexico. Local public safety officials and U.S. Army Air Forces personnel from the nearby base responded to the scene. It was quickly determined that this was an aircraft or spacecraft of some kind that was piloted or occupied by apparently intelligent beings who were not humans."

"At the time – immediately following the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War – it was decided that it was very important to maintain the secrecy of this event, as scientists and others tried to determine what was going on and how to handle it."

"In the years and decades since the so-called 'Roswell incident,' much more has been learned. However, our knowledge and understanding of the situation is still incomplete, and we are learning more all the time."

"There are some details of the history and current status of this subject that we will be able to brief you on in the coming months. However, some aspects must and will remain classified until such time as it is determined that releasing such information is in the best interests of the American people and the United States of America."

"I can say that maintaining the safety and security of the United States and all Americans continues to be a top priority for this administration, whether we are talking about terrorists, natural disasters or any other kinds of scenarios that might present themselves."

"We encourage Americans to maintain open minds, and also maintain a healthy skepticism, about various reports, claims, rumors and perceptions on this interesting and complicated subject. There is a lot of material and information out there about this subject – some of it reliable and some of it inaccurate."
