UFO detection just got easier, thanks to well, this UFO Detector.

Should you or your loved ones be preoccupied with the little green men of the cosmos, it could make the perfect Christmas gift.

For sale on Amazon.com, the UFO Detector “continually monitors its surrounding area for any magnetic and electromagnetic anomalies.”

Should the UFO Detector encounter any electromagnetic disturbances, it will beep and 16 (yes, SIXTEEN) LED lights will simultaneously flash, signalling the certain arrival of extraterrestrials.

The product description reads:

“More than 1/3 of Americans believe in UFO's and one in 10 Americans believe that they have seen a UFO according to a study by National Geographic Channel. UFO sightings are reported all over the planet by thousands of people. The real question is whether UFO's are interstellar vehicles visiting Earth? Most UFO sightings can be classified as misidentified aircraft, planets or other aerial phenomena, but not all of them. There is a small percentage of UFO sightings that can't be explained by any known aircraft or natural phenomena. It is this small percentage of UFO sightings that create an exciting possibility. Over the years real UFO sightings have reported simultaneous electromagnetic disturbances.”

But there’s more – not only is it useful, but it comes in an “elegantly designed transparent plastic case” which doubles as a “handsome sculptured conversation piece.”

The 100 online customer reviews are a mixed bag it must be said, with R.J Reid writing: “This little gizmo is a bargain at twice the price and much more accurate than the voices in my head.”

However “Cyphis” was left distinctly unimpressed: “I don’t know if this is a scam or if mine was broken, but it doesn’t work and I am still getting abducted by UFOs on a regular basis.”

The price has been slashed from $74.95 to $48.54, (around £30) making this the ultimate Christmas bargain – but hurry… at time of press there were only two left…

Soldier controls bionic arm using power of thought

Andrew Garthwaite, wounded fighting Taliban in Afghanistan, masters prosthesis after two years of therapy

by Ian Sample
Wednesday 11 December 2013 13.46 EST

A soldier whose arm was blown off by a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan has become the first person in the UK to master a prosthetic limb controlled by thought.

Corporal Andrew Garthwaite, 26, has spent two years learning how to move the arm and grip objects after a six-hour operation to have the limb wired into his body at a medical facility in Vienna.

The operation involved rewiring some of Garthwaite's nerves so that nerve fibres that once controlled his arm and hand movements instead hooked up to his chest muscles. Electrodes placed on his chest pick up the muscle movements and convert them into signals that direct the prosthetic limb.

Garthwaite, from South Shields, lost the whole of his right arm in a firefight with the Taliban in Helmand in September 2010. He became the first Briton to have the surgery, known as targeted muscle reinnervation.

The revolutionary approach has been hailed as a breakthrough in bionics and rehabilitation because it gives people natural control over their artificial limb. To grip, a unit in the prosthetic hand drives the thumb, index and middle fingers together, with the ring and little fingers following.

On the completion of his rehabilitation, the soldier said: "It has been a really long journey, enjoyable in some places but frustrating in others. I'm going to have a nice Christmas with the family and my wife. I'd like to go into TV presenting in the future. Whatever doors open, I'm looking forward to what is out there."

At the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, at Headley Court in Epsom, Surrey, Garthwaite demonstrated that he could carry out simple tasks using the arm such as potting a plant and making a jam sandwich. In the past year, he has driven a car and got back on his motorbike.

"When I first got told about the operation, I thought it was some sort of fairytale, that someone was taking the mickey," he said. "But here I am today with this arm that is fitted and works off my mind. It's unbelievable.

"It was definitely a risk. I wasn't worried at all because I had nothing to lose, so it was a risk that I was willing to take."

Doctors who perform the surgery advise patients that they will need time, patience and stamina to learn how to use the limb because it takes up to three years for the nerve to grow into the chest muscle. Garthwaite's artificial limb cost £60,000, and was paid for by the Ministry of Defence.

The defence minister Anna Soubry met Garthwaite on Wednesday. "I never thought I'd see something like this in my life time," she said. "I think you have to pinch yourself and think: he is doing this with his mind, with his brain. It is quite uncanny."

Gillian Conway, a prosthetist at Headley Court who has treated Garthwaite for the past two years, said: "It is a big step forward in prosthetics to be able to give someone intuitive control.

"You've always got to select the patient carefully. There is a lot of trauma that the patient has to go through. You need a lot of power and patience."

Her colleague, Tim Jones, a rehabilitation consultant who treated Garthwaite, said: "He's shown incredible resilience to get to today. You have to rewire your whole brain. There is no reason why this shouldn't be allowed on the NHS, too."

Soubry said the technology could eventually help people across the country who had suffered accidents, not only those who had been injured while serving in the armed forces.

The Google Clones That Power NSA Surveillance

By Klint Finley
12.12.13
6:30 AM

Google. Amazon. Facebook. These giants of the web have a knack for juggling enormous amounts of data across tens of thousands of computer servers. And they’ve been kind enough to share their “big data” methods with the world at large. Many open source software projects now let anyone build similarly enormous operations capable of juggling similarly enormous amounts of data — including the National Security Agency.

The NSA has an estimated budget of approximately $10 billion a year, but in building its massive online operation — an operation that helps the agency track the behavior of people across the U.S. and beyond — it too has opted for free software inspired by the likes of Google and Amazon.

The agency’s Googleness was on full display this week, when the Washington Post published another leaked document from NSA analyst Edward Snowden: a white paper detailing how it uses mobile location data to track the people. The paper confirms once again that the agency is using Hadoop — an open source clone of technology developed at Google — to store and analyze data collected as part of its surveillance efforts.

The agency first presented some details about its use of Hadoop at a cloud computing conference back in 2009, Information Week reported at the time. But the new story pinpoints the agency’s use of Hadoop. And it shows that open source knows no morality. Anyone can use it, for any purpose.

Hadoop was created by Doug Cutting and Mike Cafarella in 2005. They were inspired by a research paper Google published a year before detailing a system called MapReduce. MapReduce stores data across hundreds or even thousands of computing servers, and then these machines can collectively process and analyze the data. Originally funded by Yahoo, Hadoop was soon adopted by Facebook and Twitter, but it’s not just for web companies anymore. In recent years, many businesses — as well as government agencies — have adopted it.

The NSA doesn’t use Hadoop to save money. The agency uses Hadoop to process data at an unprecedented scale. “The object is to do things that were essentially impossible before,” Randy Garrett, a director of technology for NSA’s integrated intelligence program, reportedly said in 2009.

Separately, the NSA uses OpenStack, an open source cloud computer system originally developed by NASA and Rackspace. OpenStack mimics Amazon’s ability to build countless virtual servers spread across thousands of servers. Earlier this year, NSA computer scientist Nathanael Burton explained how the agency is using the system to speed the deployment of IT projects at the OpenStack Summit in Portland, Oregon.

What’s more, the agency has built its own Google clone: a massively distributed databased called Accumulo. Like Hadoop, Accumulo was based on a research paper published by Google, a paper describing a sweeping database called BigTable. There are several other BigTable clones out there, such as Cassandra and Hbase, and the NSA’s decision to build its own tool rather than use something that already existed got the agency into some hot water with Congress, as we reported last year. But it had good reason: It wanted tighter security controls.

“Back in 2008 when the project was started there just wasn’t a viable project to latch on to,” Oren J. Falkowitz, who worked on Accumulo for the NSA, told us earlier this year. “HBase existed, but it was a very different project.” He also explained that Hbase and Cassandra would have to be re-written from the ground-up to include the security tools offered by Accumulo.

The NSA isn’t just using open source technology. It’s also using stuff like IBM’s Netezza data analytics tool, for example. But it’s the open source software that gives the agency a certain power it didn’t have before the rise of Google and Amazon.

The likes of Google have publicly criticized the NSA’s online surveillance programs. But Tte irony is that they’ve helped to fuel them — in at least one way.

European Parliament: Snowden Will Make Video Appearance

By Gregor Peter Schmitz
December 12, 2013 – 05:09 PM

Parliamentary leaders of the European Parliament voted Thursday to allow the planned video appearance of the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to take place despite an attempt by conservative members of the European People's Party (EPP) to block it.

The American former intelligence contractor will answer questions that had been submitted by members of the parliament in a pre-recorded video message that will be shown at a sitting of the interior and justice committees.

"We now have a clear mandate to send written questions to Snowden, and I hope that he can answer this with a video message by mid-January," said Jan Philipp Albrecht, who, as a representative of the German Green Party in the European Parliament, is coordinating the body's NSA investigation. Snowden's video message was originally planned for Dec. 18, but the dispute over his questioning necessitated a postponement.

Snowden is expected to answer the questions on pre-recorded video because he would risk arrest by US authorities if he were to leave Russia, where he is living under temporary asylum. A live video feed could also enable the Americans to pinpoint his whereabouts.

Different Take

Axel Voss, a European Parliament representative from Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), who has maintained that such a questioning could damage trans-Atlantic relations, sees the decision differently.

"The parliamentary group leaders and the president decided that an appearance by Edward Snowden should be live or interactive," he said. "The responsible representatives from the parliamentary groups will decide on the details in January."

The parliamentary groups have been tasked with checking to see if direct or interactive testimony would be possible. But Albrecht, the Green Party representative, says: "Both options have long been rejected for being impractical. Therefore, this will be quickly resolved and we can move on."

Representatives from different groups in the European Parliament have already compiled more than 20 questions for Snowden. These range from "How are you?" and "Can we help you?" to a detailed exploration of whether and how European intelligence agencies also collect private data.

Snowden already addressed the European Parliament once in September, but only in writing, and his statement was read aloud by a confidante. "These are not decisions that should be made for the people, but only by the people after full informed and fearless debate," the statement read, referring to discussions over civil rights within a democracy.

Washington, too, has been closely following the ongoing debate. Influential US Senator Dianne Feinstein of California wrote a letter to European Parliament representatives Elmar Brok and Claude Moraes, assuring them that the US is taking Europe's data-protection concerns seriously. It has been announced that a delegation of members of the US Congress will go to Brussels on Dec. 17 to discuss how to restore trust after the revelations of NSA surveillance of EU citizens.

Green lightning may be caused by positive charges, or by camera lens

Physicist offers possible explanations for stunning photograph

by Meghan Rosen
4:30pm, December 12, 2013

User Image

SAN FRANCISCO — A zigzag of green lightning that flashed above a volcano in 2008 could have gotten its color from a cluster of positive charges.

The freak bolt, snapped by a photographer during an eruption of Chile’s Chaitén volcano, may be a different type of lightning than the kind sent down from thunderclouds, suggested atmospheric physicist Arthur Few of Rice University in Houston at the American Geophysical Union’s fall meeting on December 9.

In thunderstorms, negative charges jump from clouds to the ground in a white-hot streak. But a green color could emerge if the bolt formed from positive charges in the volcano’s ash plume, Few said. Positive charges would attract electrons that could excite nearby oxygen molecules. When oxygen molecules calm down, they emit green light.

But there may be a simpler explanation. Since Few reported his idea, several photographers have suggested to him that the color might be a trick played by the camera lens. Flip the photograph’s largest white lightning bolt upside down and take its mirror image, they say, and the result looks just like the green streak.

The camera, Few said, could somehow have recorded a green ghost of the brighter white flash.

GOOD MORNING CRYSTAL,

THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION!
INITIALLY MY OPINION SEEMED (UPON REVIEW)...SOMEWHAT OF A KNEE JERK OBSERVATION. THE UNUSUAL NATURE OF THIS PARTICULAR BOLT OF LIGHTNING COMPELLED ME TO TAKE AN ADDTIONAL ASSESSMENT.
NOW...MY THOUGHTS CENTER AROUND THE COLOR SPECTRUM...THINK BACK TO BASIC COLOR COMBINATION...YELLOW...COMBINED WITH...BLUE...ONE GETS GREEN...COLOR OF AN EMERALD.
WHEN ONE LOOKS A TAD CLOSER...ONE CAN SEE ADDTIONAL BOLTS OF LIGHTNING WHICH ARE IN A LIGHT LAVENDER COLOR SPECTRUM WITH A RELATIVELY LIGHT BLUE SKY BACKGROUND...THERE IS A COLOR SPECTRUM OVERLAY...MOREOVER...WHEN ONE LOOKS AT THE DISTINCT COLOR OF THE ONE PARTICULAR.LIGHTNING BOLT...IT TOO SEEMS TO HAVE A COLOR SPECTRUM OVERLAY...AND DUE TO THE DARK GREY SMOKE...THE COLOR IS MORE PRONOUNCED...THEY MAY EQUALLY HAVE THE SAME COLOR SPECTRUM DISPLAYED...BUT.DIFFERING BACKGROUNDS HEIGHTEN THE COLORS PERCEIVED...IMHO cool
