French soldier wears Nazi slogan on uniform in Central African Republic

Soldier, said to be in an elite parachute regiment, photographed with patch carrying the words 'Meine Ehre heisst Treue'

by Kim Willsher in Paris
Sunday 22 December 2013 09.19 EST

French military chiefs have launched an investigation to after a soldier serving in the Central African Republic was pictured wearing a Nazi slogan on his uniform.

The man, reportedly from an elite parachute regiment, was photographed in fatigues carrying his rifle. On the right sleeve of his uniform was sewn a round patch carrying the number 32 on a French flag and the words "Meine Ehre heisst Treue" ("my honour is loyalty"). The motto was used by Nazi Waffen-SS soldiers during the second world war and is banned in a number of countries including Germany and Austria.

Embarrassingly, the photograph was part of a series posted on the French army's official external operations Facebook page before it was taken down.

According to La Dépêche du Midi newspaper, the soldier is from the 8th Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment, an elite unit based in Castres in south-west France.

Philippe Folliot the local MP, said he believed it was a "childish prank … and an isolated incident".

He said the soldier, who has not been named, was "a young sergeant, who doesn't even know the Nazi reference".

"The motto in itself isn't shocking if you don't know that reference," Folliot told La Dépêche du Midi.

"The insignia is not official and he will be sanctioned, but we should make this an affair of state and certainly this tiny incident should not stain the very difficult mission the 8th Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment are carrying out in an exemplary manner in the CAR."

France has sent about 1,600 troops to the Central African Republic to disarm rebels from rival Christian and Muslim militias who have reportedly massacred more than 1,000 civilians and threaten to drag the country into civil war.

"This is an unacceptable attitude that doesn't reflect the reality of the armed forces," army spokesman Colonel Gilles Jaron said.

"The soldier will be immediately suspended as soon as we have identified him," he added and confirmed that the patch is not part of the army's uniform.

The controversy follows a similar row in November, when a French soldier in Mali was photographed wearing a scarf printed with a death mask. In 2008, three French soldiers from another parachute regiment, also based in south-west France, were photographed making a Hitler salute while wrapped in a Nazi flag bearing a swastika.

Terrified airline pilot DUCKS as he sees UFO heading straight to cockpit

Dec 22, 2013 12:05
By Ben Glaze

A terrified airline pilot ducked to avoid a UFO he feared was going to smash into his plane at 34,000ft.

The captain of the packed Airbus A320 spotted the silver object heading straight for the cockpit as his plane flew above Berkshire.

He was looking out of the left window a split second before the bizarre incident.

A safety report said: “As he turned to look ahead, he perceived an object travelling towards them at what appeared to be the same level, slightly above the flight deck windscreen.

“Having very little time to focus, he was under the apprehension that they were on a collision course with no time to react.

“His immediate reaction was to duck to the right and reach over to alert the first officer; there was no time to talk to alert him.”

The stunned captain blurted out: “Did you see that?”

But his bemused deputy had not seen the UFO and replied: “See what?”

The pilot’s behaviour made him fear there was a fault with their plane.

“The first officer turned and looked at him thinking some was wrong with the aircraft,” the report revealed.

The captain was so spooked by the incident in July that he reported the sighting to safety watchdogs at the UK Airprox Board , which investigates near-misses in British airspace.

He told experts he saw a flying object shaped like a cigar or rugby ball, which was “bright silver, metallic”.

The “near-miss” happened 20 miles west of Heathrow Airport, according to a report published last week.

An official probe said: “The pilot was subjected to a powerful impression of immediate danger caused by his perception of an object closing rapidly on his aircraft.”

But investigators, who did not reveal which airline was involved, failed to find any unidentified aircraft in the area at the time.

They added: “It wasn’t possible to trace the object or determine the likely cause of the sighting.”

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

User Image

“A Different Christmas Poem"

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,
Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts...
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "It’s really all right.
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night. "

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers. "
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

" So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right. "

"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son. "

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.

For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us. "

Fukushima cleanup to take three extra years

Kyodo
Dec 23, 2013

Decontamination work stemming from the 2011 crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant will take up to three years longer than originally planned, government officials say.

The Environment Ministry will shortly release a new schedule for radiation cleanup work at the plant, which was scheduled to be completed by March 31 under the initial plan, the officials said Sunday.

Instead, the government will try to complete the work by fiscal 2017, when areas around the crippled plant, currently divided into three zones based on radiation levels, are reorganized.

Of the 11 municipalities undergoing cleanup in Fukushima Prefecture, work has only been completed in the city of Tamura. Three other areas are heading for completion by March 31, which marks the end of the current fiscal year.

The ministry believes that a three-year extension would be enough to complete the decontamination work in most of the municipalities.

An exception is Futaba, one of the towns hosting the crippled plant, where many of the areas are classified as “difficult to return to for a long time,” the officials said.

On Dec. 14, the government announced plans to acquire 19 sq. km of land, chiefly around the Fukushima No. 1 plant, to build facilities for the long-term storage of radioactive and other waste piling up in the decontamination process.

The government aims to start using the planned facilities in January 2015.

The ministry has earmarked a total of ¥1.5 trillion for radioactive decontamination through fiscal 2013, ending next March, and has asked plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. to pay back ¥40 billion of the funds it has so far used. But the utility has only returned ¥6.7 billion, citing delays in clerical work and tough business conditions.

This Harvard Prof’s Printed Batteries Could Revolutionize Our Gadgets

By Joseph Flaherty
12.23.13
9:30 AM

If 3-D printers are ever going to live up to their promise as the factories of the future, they’ll need to do more than just pop out plastic doodads. MakerBots can churn out plastic Yoda heads all day long, but even relatively simple electromechanical constructions are still far beyond the capabilities of even the most advanced 3-D printers.

It turns out the challenge isn’t so much the machines, but rather what’s put into them. Professor Jennifer Lewis is the head of the Lewis Lab at Harvard and has spent the last couple decades working on a series of smart “inks” that allow designers to create bespoke batteries and electrical contacts using entry-level 3-D printers. “We’re focusing on expanding 3-D printing from form into function,” she says. With enough time and a little luck, designers will be able to 3-D print a robot and watch it walk itself out of the printer.

Ink doesn’t really do justice to the technical sophistication of Lewis’ materials. The battery material is solid under normal conditions, but liquifies under pressure before returning to its solid state. This novel property allows the batteries to be deposited on a plastic substrate at room temperature and opens up a world of design flexibility not available with traditional high-temperature manufacturing processes. In theory, instead of dedicating a prime piece of circuit board real estate to an off-the-shelf battery, Lewis’ liquid power source could be deposited in-between other components to help reduce the size of the gadgets.

One might expect these miraculous materials to be fabricated in some futuristic clean room, but they’re easily manufactured in Lewis’ relatively ordinary academic environment. The battery materials are produced by suspending nano-particles of lithium titanium oxide in a mixture of deionized water and ethylene glycol. Ceramic balls are added to the container holding the charged concoction and serve as agitators, breaking down the metal. The bottle is spun for 24 hours after which the balls are removed, the battery material is separated in a centrifuge, and designers are left with a fresh cartridge of wonder ink.

ISS astronauts conducting scheduled Christmas Eve spacewalk to finish repairs

By Kwame Opam
December 24, 2013 09:47 am

NASA astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Michael Hopkins are once again floating outside the International Space Station, in the second scheduled effort to repair the station's malfunctioning coolant system and only the second Christmas Eve spacewalk in NASA history.

The need for repairs was brought about by one of the ISS' two coolant loops unexpectedly shutting down on December 11th. Since then, the crew has had to turn off nonessential equipment to conserve power. Today's effort follows Saturday's successful mission, during which the engineers managed to remove a failing ammonia pump. The live feed of the repairs can be viewed below:

Watch the Army zap apart mortar rounds, drones with new laser system

By W.J. Hennigan
December 24, 2013, 7:15 a.m.

The U.S. Army successfully tested a high-energy laser beam to zap apart mortar rounds and drones while they were in mid-flight.

The solid state laser was mounted to a tactical military vehicle and carried out multiple tests between Nov. 18 and Dec. 10 at the Army’s White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

It was an important milestone for the Army toward its goal of using large lasers as a protection capability at military installations against incoming rockets, artillery and cruise missiles.

The weapon, called the High Energy Laser Mobile Demonstrator, involves a 10-kilowatt laser beam fired from a eight-wheeled vehicle that resembles a garbage truck.

A dome-shaped turret called the beam director rotates 360 degrees and contains a set of mirrors that point and focus the beam on a target, so the solid state laser can engage it.

In the video of the test, football-sized mortar rounds are fired in high-arching trajectories and traveling at low velocities before being blasted apart. Drones are seen coasting along in flight before their tails catch on fire and nose-dive to the ground.

In all, the Army targeted and destroyed more than 90 incoming mortar rounds and several drones.

The targets were chosen because they are representative of the likely threats that are encountered by forces on the battlefield, the Army said.

The Army’s testing involved a 10-kilowatt laser, which will be brought to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida for more rigorous testing, including in inclement weather.

The Army hopes to increase the laser's power to 50 kilowatts, then again to 100 kilowatts in subsequent demonstrations.

In 2011, the Navy had success with another laser system mounted on a warship when it fired and set fire to an empty motorboat as it bobbed in the Pacific Ocean. It was the first time the Navy pulled off such a feat.
