They chase them, set an ambush, catch them, and tear them apart': Sir David Attenborough reveals his most distressing moment

Sir David Attenborough has seen some horrific sights over the course of his 60-year career.

None so terrible, however, than watching monkeys brutally murdered by chimpanzees.

The Octogenarian naturalist, who released his latest film Natural History Museum Alive on New Year’s Eve, was answering questions from fans during an hour-long Q&A session on social media site Reddit yesterday.
Sir David Attenborough sounds population warning: 'Things are going to get worse' if humans have large families

Asked by one member what he felt his distressing moment was, he said:

“Seeing chimpanzees kill monkeys, they do this to eat them.

“They chase them, set an ambush, catch them, and tear them apart,” he added.

But, he went on to add, chimpanzees were also responsible for the most human act he’d witnessed in the wild: lying.

“Also, when some Colobus monkeys find a very precious piece of food, it calls the alarm call that it would make if a snake were to arrive, and all the other monkeys run away and it gets the food,” he continued.

Perhaps even more distressing was his answer to whether he thinks the world is on the brink of a new era of mass extinction.

“Yes, I’m afraid we are,” he wrote. “It’s not possible to reverse the damage we’ve done. We are undoubtedly exterminating species at a speed which has never been known before.”

“People should realise that waste of anything is something that we cannot afford in this overcrowded world,” he went on to say, before praising the Worldwide Fund for Nature as an organisation everyone needs to know about.

In more trivial news, Attenborough said that his next project, a 3D film on the evolution of flight, is slated for release around Christmas this year.

His childhood inspiration was the naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton, and, most importantly, he revealed his favourite biscuit.

It’s chocolate, if you must know.

We Pick the 10 Best Gadgets at CES

By Gadget Lab Staff

Of all the consumer electronics (and other products of varying origin) we saw at CES 2014, these are our picks for the most interesting, the most important, and the most awesome.

Above:

Oculus Rift

For the second year in a row, the Oculus Rift was one of the coolest things we saw at CES. The company's new Crystal Cove prototype has unbelievable head tracking, letting you lean in and out and look at objects from multiple angles. For example, you can now lean forward, angle your head and peer around a wall. They've also come very close to licking the immersion-quashing latency issues (lag time) of the previous prototype with some innovative new tricks. There's basically no discernible motion blur.

This year, nearly every member of our CES team got a demo, and we all had the same post-Oculus reaction: giddy, wide-eyed amazement. It's one of those rare products you know will change everything when it finally gets a consumer release.

UFO Causes German Airport To Divert Flights

By Melissa Locker
Jan. 08, 2014

While flights across the US have been cancelled due to the deep freeze of the polar vortex, flights in Bremen, Germany were cancelled for an entirely different reason: a UFO.

On Monday night, an unidentified flying object showed up on Bremen Airport’s radar several times over three hours from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, causing one flight to be cancelled, one diverted and other delayed as police and airport officials investigated the UFO activity.

According to the Local.DE, Bremen police were alerted to potential UFO activity when a patrol car apparently saw the object around 6:30 p.m. Witnesses report that “It looked like a plane. It had lights but was a lot louder.”

A spokesman for German Air Traffic Control told the Weser Kurier: “It had normal lights, red and green and an approach light on both sides,” adding that whatever the UFO was, it could be seen through binoculars from the airport’s traffic control tower.

A police helicopter was sent off in pursuit, but was unable to track down the UFO. A Bremen police spokesman told the Local,“We still don’t know what it was, but it was there.” The hunt for the UFO is still on as officers investigate the case on grounds of unauthorized intrusion into controlled air space. Possible explanations include that it was a drone, a balloon-like aircraft or aliens attempting to turn Earth into a breeding colony.

No word on whether Steven Spielberg has purchased the movie rights to this event yet.

Fate of Ark of the Covenant Revealed in Hebrew Text
A newly translated Hebrew text claims to reveal where treasures from King Solomon's temple were hidden and discusses the fate of the Ark of the Covenant itself.

User Image

But unlike the Indiana Jones movie "Raiders of the Lost Ark," the text leaves the exact location of the Ark unclear and states that it, and the other treasures, "shall not be revealed until the day of the coming of the Messiah son of David …" putting it out of reach of any would-be treasure seeker.

King Solomon's Temple, also called the First Temple, was plundered and torched by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II in the sixth century B.C., according to the Hebrew Bible. The Ark of the Covenant is a chest that, when originally built, was said to have held tablets containing the 10 commandments. It was housed in Solomon's Temple, a place that contained many different treasures. [Religious Mysteries: 8 Alleged Relics of Jesus]

The newly translated text, called "Treatise of the Vessels" (Massekhet Kelim in Hebrew), says the "treasures were concealed by a number of Levites and prophets," writes James Davila, a professor at the University of St. Andrews, in an article in the book "Old Testament Pseudepigrapha More Noncanonical Scriptures Volume 1" (William B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2013).

"Some of these (treasures) were hidden in various locations in the Land of Israel and in Babylonia, while others were delivered into the hands of the angels Shamshiel, Michael, Gabriel and perhaps Sariel …" writes Davila in his article.

The treatise is similar in some ways to the metallic "Copper Scroll," one of the Dead Sea Scrolls found near the site of Qumran in the West Bank. The Copper Scroll also discusses the location of hidden treasure, although not from Solomon's Temple.

The treatise describes the treasures in an imaginative way. One part refers to "seventy-seven tables of gold, and their gold was from the walls of the Garden of Eden that was revealed to Solomon, and they radiated like the radiance of the sun and moon, which radiate at the height of the world."

The oldest confirmed example of the treatise, which survives to present day, is from a book published in Amsterdam in 1648 called "Emek Halachah." In 1876, a scholar named Adolph Jellinek published another copy of the text, which was virtually identical to the 1648 version. Davila is the first to translate the text fully into

Surprising New Class of 'Hypervelocity Stars' Discovered Escaping the Galaxy

Jan. 9, 2014 — An international team of astronomers has discovered a surprising new class of "hypervelocity stars" -- solitary stars moving fast enough to escape the gravitational grasp of the Milky Way galaxy.

The discovery of this new set of "hypervelocity" stars was described at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society this week in Washington, D.C., and is published in the Jan. 1 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.

"These new hypervelocity stars are very different from the ones that have been discovered previously," said Vanderbilt University graduate student Lauren Palladino, lead author on the study. "The original hypervelocity stars are large blue stars and appear to have originated from the galactic center. Our new stars are relatively small -- about the size of the sun -- and the surprising part is that none of them appear to come from the galactic core."

The discovery came as Palladino, working under the supervision of Kelly Holley-Bockelmann, assistant professor of astronomy at Vanderbilt was mapping the Milky Way by calculating the orbits of Sun-like stars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a massive census of the stars and galaxies in a region covering nearly one quarter of the sky.

"It's very hard to kick a star out of the galaxy," said Holley-Bockelmann. "The most commonly accepted mechanism for doing so involves interacting with the supermassive black hole at the galactic core. That means when you trace the star back to its birthplace, it comes from the center of our galaxy. None of these hypervelocity stars come from the center, which implies that there is an unexpected new class of hypervelocity star, one with a different ejection mechanism."

Astrophysicists calculate that a star must get a million-plus mile-per-hour kick relative to the motion of the galaxy to reach escape velocity. They also estimate that the Milky Way's central black hole has a mass equivalent to four million suns, large enough to produce a gravitational force strong enough to accelerate stars to hyper velocities. The typical scenario involves a binary pair of stars that get caught in the black hole's grip. As one of the stars spirals in toward the black hole, its companion is flung outward at a tremendous velocity. So far, 18 giant blue hypervelocity stars have been found that could have been produced by such a mechanism.

Now Palladino and her colleagues have discovered an additional 20 sun-sized stars that they characterize as possible hypervelocity stars. "One caveat concerns the known errors in measuring stellar motions," she said. "To get the speed of a star, you have to measure the position really accurately over decades. If the position is measured badly a few times over that long time interval, it can seem to move a lot faster than it really does. We did several statistical tests to increase the accuracy of our estimates. So we think that, although some of our candidates may be flukes, the majority are real."

The astronomers are following up with additional observations. The new rogues appear to have the same composition as normal disk stars, so the astronomers do not think that their birthplace was in the galaxy's central bulge, the halo that surrounds it, or in some other exotic place outside the galaxy. "The big question is: what boosted these stars up to such extreme velocities? We are working on that now," said Holley-Bockelmann.

Katharine Schlesinger from the Australian National University, Carlos Allende Prieto from the Universidad de La Laguna in Spain, Timothy Beers from the National Optical Astronomy Observatory in Tucson, Young Sun Lee from New Mexico State University and Donald Schneider from Pennsylvania State University also contributed to the discovery.

Reuters

U.S. warns of possible terrorism at Sochi, but no specific threat

WASHINGTON
Fri Jan 10, 2014 6:12pm EST

(Reuters) - The U.S. State Department warned Americans on Friday of the potential for terrorism at the Sochi Olympics but said it was not aware of any specific threat to U.S. citizens.

In a "travel warning," the department urged Americans to be vigilant about personal security at the February 7 to March 14 Olympic Games, and flagged the possibility of petty crime, inadequate medical care and hotel shortages.

It also highlighted a Russian law, much criticized by rights groups, that would make it a crime to publicly promote the equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

"Large-scale public events such as the Olympics present an attractive target for terrorists," the State Department wrote in the travel warning, saying that Russian authorities have said they are taking appropriate security measures.

However, the department noted what it described as "acts of terrorism" in Russia during the final three months of last year, including three suicide bombings that targeted public transportation in city of Volgograd, 600 miles from Sochi.

"There is no indication of a specific threat to U.S. institutions or citizens, but U.S. citizens should be aware of their personal surroundings and follow good security practices," it said.

The warning also highlighted the danger of petty crime and the possibility that political demonstrations - which the Olympic charter bars at the site of the Games, but which Russian authorities say may take place seven miles from Sochi in the village of Khost - could unexpectedly turn violent.

It also noted that Russia's State Duma lower house of parliament passed a law in June banning the "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" to minors which, in the U.S. government's view, applies to Russian citizens and foreigners.

"Russian citizens found guilty of violating the law could face a fine of up to 100,000 rubles ($3,100). Foreign citizens face similar fines, up to 14 days in jail, and deportation," it said.
