The Telegraph Australia

UFO expert will bring insights to Campbelltown meeting

January 23, 2014 12:00AM

ONE of the world's pre-eminent voices on unidentified flying objects will be the guest speaker at the UFO and Paranormal Society of Australia's meeting on February 5.

Gary Haseltine will speak to residents about UFO sightings reported by the police at Campbelltown Arts Centre from 7pm.

Mr Haseltine is a retired British police detective who served for 22 years and founded the Police Reporting UFO Sightings in 2002. He also founded UFO Truth Magazine and formerly edited UFOMonthly.com and UFO Data Magazine.

In the past 10 years he has amassed 425 cases involving more than 900 British police officers. In the past four years he has worked on Britain's most famous UFO case, the Rendlesham Forest incident from 1980.

UFO society secretary Dominic McNamara encouraged residents to attend. "It's an opportunity for people to hear from someone who is an authority on UFOs," he said.

Tickets cost $20 for UFO society members, $25 non-members, sold at the door. Details: ufosociety.net.au.

Science Daily

E-Whiskers: Highly Sensitive Tactile Sensors Developed for Robotics and Other Applications

Jan. 21, 2014 — From the world of nanotechnology we've gotten electronic skin, or e-skin, and electronic eye implants or e-eyes. Now we're on the verge of electronic whiskers. Researchers with Berkeley Lab and the University of California (UC) Berkeley have created tactile sensors from composite films of carbon nanotubes and silver nanoparticles similar to the highly sensitive whiskers of cats and rats. These new e-whiskers respond to pressure as slight as a single Pascal, about the pressure exerted on a table surface by a dollar bill. Among their many potential applications is giving robots new abilities to "see" and "feel" their surrounding environment.

"Whiskers are hair-like tactile sensors used by certain mammals and insects to monitor wind and navigate around obstacles in tight spaces," says the leader of this research Ali Javey, a faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and a UC Berkeley professor of electrical engineering and computer science. "Our electronic whiskers consist of high-aspect-ratio elastic fibers coated with conductive composite films of nanotubes and nanoparticles. In tests, these whiskers were 10 times more sensitive to pressure than all previously reported capacitive or resistive pressure sensors."

Javey and his research group have been leaders in the development of e-skin and other flexible electronic devices that can interface with the environment. In this latest effort, they used a carbon nanotube paste to form an electrically conductive network matrix with excellent bendability. To this carbon nanotube matrix they loaded a thin film of silver nanoparticles that endowed the matrix with high sensitivity to mechanical strain.

"The strain sensitivity and electrical resistivity of our composite film is readily tuned by changing the composition ratio of the carbon nanotubes and the silver nanoparticles," Javey says. "The composite can then be painted or printed onto high-aspect-ratio elastic fibers to form e-whiskers that can be integrated with different user-interactive systems."

Javey notes that the use of elastic fibers with a small spring constant as the structural component of the whiskers provides large deflection and therefore high strain in response to the smallest applied pressures. As proof-of-concept, he and his research group successfully used their e-whiskers to demonstrate highly accurate 2D and 3D mapping of wind flow. In the future, e-whiskers could be used to mediate tactile sensing for the spatial mapping of nearby objects, and could also lead to wearable sensors for measuring heartbeat and pulse rate.

"Our e-whiskers represent a new type of highly responsive tactile sensor networks for real time monitoring of environmental effects," Javey says. "The ease of fabrication, light weight and excellent performance of our e-whiskers should have a wide range of applications for advanced robotics, human-machine user interfaces, and biological applications."

A paper describing this research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The paper is titled "Highly sensitive electronic whiskers based on patterned carbon nanotube and silver nanoparticle composite films." Javey is the corresponding author. Co-authors are Kuniharu Takei, Zhibin Yu, Maxwell Zheng, Hiroki Ota and Toshitake Takahashi.

This research was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Ibiza holiday jet in near miss with UFO over Reading

A Thomas Cook airliner flying holidaymakers home from Ibiza to Manchester passes "within feet" of a UFO.

By Jasper Copping
12:20PM GMT 23 Jan 2014

Any pilot flying holidaymakers between Manchester and Ibiza must be prepared for outlandish sights.

But perhaps nothing so apparently unworldly as this.

The captain of a Thomas Cook airliner flying tourists back from the Spanish holiday island to the north of England reported a "near miss" with a "rugby ball"-shaped UFO, which passed within feet of his jet.

The encounter, over Reading, Berks, was reported to the aviation authorities, who launched an investigation. But no earthly identity for the object could be established.

The encounter was disclosed earlier this month by the Telegraph, following the publication of a report into the inquiry. The document did not identify the aircraft involved.

However, following an analysis of flight data recorded on the internet, the Telegraph has established it was a Thomas Cook plane, with the flight number TCX24HX. It was an A320, with the registration G-KKAZ, which was made in 2003.

The jet was flying to Manchester International airport, from Ibiza, on July 19th 2013. For years, the island has enjoyed a hedonistic reputation, attracting thousands of tourists each summer, many attracted to its vibrant nightlife. In recent years, it has attracted an increasingly upmarket clientele, among them David and Samantha Cameron.

The aircraft was flying at 516mph, at an altitude of 34,000ft, when it was passed by the UFO.

The encounter occurred in daylight, at around 6.35pm. It only emerged following publication of the report, which concluded it was “not possible to trace the object or determine the likely cause of the sighting”.

The captain said he spotted the object travelling towards the jet out of a left hand side, cockpit window, apparently heading directly for it. He said there was no time to for the aircrew to take evasive action.

He told investigators he was certain the object was going to crash into his aircraft and ducked as it headed towards him.

The incident was investigated by the UK Airprox Board, which studies “near misses” involving aircraft in British airspace.

The report states: “(The captain) was under the apprehension that they were on collision course with no time to react. His immediate reaction was to duck to the right and reach over to alert the FO (First Officer); there was no time to talk to alert him.”

It adds: “The Captain was fully expecting to experience some kind of impact with a conflicting aircraft.”

He told investigators he believes the object passes “within a few feet” above the jet.

He described it as being “cigar/rugby ball like” in shape, bright silver and apparently “metallic” in construction.

Once it had passed, the captain checked the aircraft’s instruments and contacted air traffic controllers to report the incident. However, there was no sign of the mystery craft.

As part of the inquiry, data recordings were checked to establish what other aircraft were in the area at the time. However, all were eliminated. The investigation also ruled out meteorological balloons, after checking none were released in the vicinity. Toy balloons were also discounted, as they are not large enough to reach such heights. Military radar operators were contacted but were unable to trace the reported object.

A spokesman for Thomas Cook Airlines said, “All our pilots are trained and required to report any unexpected events that occur during the flight to the aviation authorities.”

The Ministry of Defence closed its UFO desk in December 2009, along with its hotline for reporting such sightings. Following that change, the Civil Aviation Authority took the decision that it would continue to look into such reports, from aircrew and air traffic controllers, because they could have implications for “flight safety”.

In 2012, the head of the National Air Traffic Control Services admitted staff detected around one unexplained flying object every month.

Bigfoot, sexy? Erotica author explains

Salon talks with Virginia Wade, author of highly popular sasquatch smut, about the appeal of "monster porn"

by Tracy Clark-Flory

Forget blood and fangs. Move over, ball gags and bullwhips. Now it’s all about Bigfoot’s big ****.

At least, that was the message last week amid a media frenzy over the discovery that sasquatch erotica is not only a thing that exists in the world, but a thing that has made Virginia Wade, a self-publishing “stay-at-home mother,” a whole lot of dough. The “Twilight” and “Fifty Shades” comparisons practically write themselves.

For some time, Wade, a New York Times bestseller, was bringing in $30,000 a month from sales of her e-book series “*** For Bigfoot,” which begins with teenage girls being kidnapped by “an ape-like creature” intent on “procreating with them.” Contrary to last week’s hype over sasquatch smut, though, Wade was in fact planning to end the series because Amazon’s crackdowns on erotica has killed sales. This recent media attention just might change her mind, though.

I called Wade, who is in her 40s, at her home in Colorado to talk about “monster porn,” the sexual appeal of dangerous men (and beasts) and what it was like having her father edit her erotica. But, more important, to ask her the pressing question: What kind of lover is Bigfoot, anyway?

So, tell me, how does one end up writing monster erotica?

I meant to put assorted in there to be politically correct..it was my bad.. cry cry

Another Global Moderator, speaking for BJ stated
For the record we at UCB disavow any prior knowledge of government involvement in this scandalous operation(s) as I run a family business with 18 thousand members worlwide..performing a vitally needed public service ranging from current events..historical archeology, photometric forensics, from the mundane to the bizarre, to get at the truth of whatever matter may be in the public eye. Its discovery at its finest.

If the reports are true..then whatever motivated them is not in line with our mission and goes against the grain of what ,the last time I checked, is a free and democratic society.

They have no business in these forums, no national security interest// It is our duty to assure we remain free of propaganda, scams and hoaxes foisted on our members to bait them into illegal acts or acts or behavior that will affect their livelihoods..and even freedom.
What happened to those agents named or unnamed only proves..That there is still a God in Heaven.
With that..stay out of our forums as I intend to file for injunctive relief at the earliest opportunity even if we have to sue the entire alphabet..
You can take that to the bank..
