Der Spiegel

It wasn't only Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile phone that was on the NSA's target list.
New German media reports claim the US spy agency also tapped Gerhard Schröder's phone calls in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq war.

5 February 2014

Edward Snowden appeared to come very close to announcing the news himself. During his recent interview with German public broadcaster NDR, he said: "I would suggest it seems unreasonable that if anyone was concerned about the intentions of German leadership that they would only watch Merkel and not her aides, not other prominent officials, not heads of ministries or even local government officials."

Now it appears that, in addition to eavesdropping German Chancellor Angela Merkel's mobile communications, the National Security Agency was also eavesdropping on Gerhard Schröder's phone while he was still chancellor. On Tuesday night, the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper and NDR reported that Schröder had appeared on the so-called National Sigint Requirement List, a list of people and institutions named for targetting by the intelligence agency whose telephone communications should be monitored. Schröder was reportedly assigned the number "388" in 2002, if not sooner.

The reports cite unnamed US government and NSA insider sources claiming that Schröder was declared a target for monitoring because of his critical position on US preparations for a war in Iraq. A person with knowledge of the action is quoted as saying that the US had reason to believe that Schröder would not help lead the alliance toward success.

Criticism from German Government

In Germany, the revelations appeared to create new tensions in German-American relations. Speaking to SPIEGEL ONLINE, German Justice Minister Heiko Maas, of Schröder's center-left Social Democratic Party, accused the NSA of conducting indiscriminate mass surveillance. "Protecting safety appears to be a guise for the NSA to collect unlimited data," he said. "Eavesdropping on a chancellor's mobile phone in no way contributes to protecting against terrorist attacks."

Maas called for Germany to continue to push for a no-spy agreement with the US, despite resistance from Washington. "Even if it won't be easy for the Americans, we still need to continue pushing for an international agreement, because we cannot spare any effort to ensure the the data of people in Germany is better protected."

Responding to questions about the allegation that the NSA spied on Schröder, agency spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden told SPIEGEL ONLINE the intelligence agency would not publicly comment on every alleged intelligence service activity.

Spying on World Leaders

When SPIEGEL reported in October 2013 that Angela Merkel's mobile phone had been tapped -- even as far back as 2002, when she headed the conservative Christian Democratic Union party before becoming German's leader -- the article prompted massive outrage in Berlin. Further stories showed that the US intelligence service had also been eavesdropping on numerous other world leaders. In a speech addressing the NSA scandal, US President Barack Obama pledged that his agencies would no longer eavesdrop on the leaders of allied countries in the future. However, he at the same time imposed conditions that still give the intelligence agencies plenty of room for maneuver.

In a report in the German weekly Bild am Sonntag published shortly after the revelations about Merkel, the newspaper cited unnamed sources claiming that Gerhard Schröder's calls had also been monitored since 2002. The paper also reported that the chancellor told confidants he was convinced the US intelligence services were eavesdropping on him. In the report published on Tuesday, however, Schröder told the Süddeutsche Zeitung, "At the time, I wouldn't have thought that the American services were eavesdropping on me, but now it doesn't surprise me." The newspaper cited government sources claiming that officials in Berlin have long assumed that Schröder's communications had also been tapped.

In their reports, Süddeutsche and NDR claim the NSA was tasked not only with collecting metadata, but also information about when and with whom each target was speaking. The contents of telephone calls and SMS messages were also captured. And this appears to have applied to both Merkel and Schröder.

The method the NSA uses to tap mobile phone calls is already publicly known. A mobile phone base station tricks a mobile phone into thinking it is a real mobile phone mast and intercepts the data before transmitting it on to the real one. Any communication intercepted by one of these base stations can be captured.

Am Ambivalent Relationship with Mobile Phones

It is already public knowledge that the NSA deploys these devices. SPIEGEL reported the contents at the end of December of an entire catalogue of spying and eavesdropping devices the NSA uses.

Daily Mail

Is this a UFO... or just a 4.3billion-year-old meteor plummeting towards Earth at 45 miles a second?

Amateur photographer captures image of mysterious light above Cornwall

He has been unable to work out the origins of the flash in the sky

Area is known as 'UFO Triangle' but the photo may just show a meteor

This eerie photograph showing a UFO flashing across the sky was captured by a grandfather who has been left baffled by the 'mysterious object'.

Amateur photographer Michael Potter took the image while photographing the cloud formations above the seaside resort of Mount's Bay in Cornwall.

He was about to delete the picture when he noticed the unexplained flash of light streaking across the sky.

'I uploaded the photos to my laptop and had decided to delete the picture because of the apparent sunspot over part of the image,' he said.

'But just as I was about to press delete I noticed the image on the left of the photograph of what I thought was either an aircraft or the sun shining through the clouds.

What makes us human? Unique brain area linked to higher cognitive powers

February 5, 2014

Source: University of Oxford

Oxford University researchers have identified an area of the human brain that appears unlike anything in the brains of some of our closest relatives.

The brain area pinpointed is known to be intimately involved in some of the most advanced planning and decision-making processes that we think of as being especially human.

'We tend to think that being able to plan into the future, be flexible in our approach and learn from others are things that are particularly impressive about humans. We've identified an area of the brain that appears to be uniquely human and is likely to have something to do with these cognitive powers,' says senior researcher Professor Matthew Rushworth of Oxford University's Department of Experimental Psychology.

MRI imaging of 25 adult volunteers was used to identify key components in the ventrolateral frontal cortex area of the human brain, and how these components were connected up with other brain areas. The results were then compared to equivalent MRI data from 25 macaque monkeys.

This ventrolateral frontal cortex area of the brain is involved in many of the highest aspects of cognition and language, and is only present in humans and other primates. Some parts are implicated in psychiatric conditions like ADHD, drug addiction or compulsive behaviour disorders. Language is affected when other parts are damaged after stroke or neurodegenerative disease. A better understanding of the neural connections and networks involved should help the understanding of changes in the brain that go along with these conditions.

The Oxford University researchers report their findings in the science journal Neuron.

Professor Rushworth explains: 'The brain is a mosaic of interlinked areas. We wanted to look at this very important region of the frontal part of the brain and see how many tiles there are and where they are placed.

'We also looked at the connections of each tile -- how they are wired up to the rest of the brain -- as it is these connections that determine the information that can reach that component part and the influence that part can have on other brain regions.'

From the MRI data, the researchers were able to divide the human ventrolateral frontal cortex into 12 areas that were consistent across all the individuals.

'Each of these 12 areas has its own pattern of connections with the rest of the brain, a sort of "neural fingerprint," telling us it is doing something unique,' says Professor Rushworth.

The researchers were then able to compare the 12 areas in the human brain region with the organisation of the monkey prefrontal cortex.

Overall, they were very similar with 11 of the 12 areas being found in both species and being connected up to other brain areas in very similar ways.

However, one area of the human ventrolateral frontal cortex had no equivalent in the macaque -- an area called the lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex.

'We have established an area in human frontal cortex which does not seem to have an equivalent in the monkey at all,' says first author Franz-Xaver Neubert of Oxford University. 'This area has been identified with strategic planning and decision making as well as "multi-tasking." '

The Oxford research group also found that the auditory parts of the brain were very well connected with the human prefrontal cortex, but much less so in the macaque. The researchers suggest this may be critical for our ability to understand and generate speech.

The researchers were funded by the UK Medical Research Council.
