By the way, at the moment (20:48 UK time,) there is on the BBC (Horizon)a documentary called 'Which universe are we in ?'

It will be on the BBC iplayer from tomorrow. Hopefully on BBC catch up later tonight.

Maybe you folk who are not fortunate enough to live in our green and pleasant land can get it via the web.

I'd be watching it myself now except it clashes with my wife's programs.

Should be interesting. Deals with the concept of the multiverse.

mk quite simple if you see or feel someone fizzing on your back and he/she and calls it rain then you know.

@ Hal I have no way of knowing if they were aware of me or not. And I was only watching them grow, not trying to engage them in philosophical discussion.
I limit my conversation with them to a courteous 'Good Morning; plants'. After all, it would be bad manners not to greet them in the morning.

that's a very sensible thing to do before you give the grass a haircut with the lawn mower..they ordinarily don't appreciate it and release chemicals that are associated with allergies. Some tribes of native American Indians were known to speak to a tree before they felled it for their use.

I know that works. That is why the ufo phenomena is so interesting to me.

I vote for the multivers; well, for now, anyway.

And if what they claim is true, which is going to be very hard to demonstrate, and everything that can happen will happen then maybe there is an explanation for dimension hopping aliens; and (Heaven forbid) Carolnistri's demons.

ESP ? Oh yes.

Folks, I am tired of listening to all of the anti-gun rhetoric. It is high time we start attacking the REAL issue, which is finding out why our society is so full of evil violence. Take a look at the two examples below.

Is it an entitlement issue? Is it the deterioration of the family unit? Is it the reduced impact of religion? Is it a failure of the education system? Is it a lack of leadership by government? Is it our entertainment culture, our movies, our television, our electronic games?

As the violence continues, the government may well get the guns, but anyone who is convinced that will solve the problem is in for a bitter disappointment.

Okay, those are my thoughts. I would be interested in the thoughts of folks from other countries, such as Britain. What is the thinking about America's easy access to guns and their apparent propensity for violence?

Police arrest brothers in knife attack against parents

September 06, 2015

A Georgia mother called 911 early Saturday morning and told the dispatcher her sons were trying to kill her and her husband.
Then the line went silent.

When police arrived to Yvonne and Zachary Ervin’s home in Gwinnett County, Ga., at 7:50 a.m., they found the couple seriously injured with stab wounds and the house’s gas line meddled with, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Police arrested Christopher Ervin, 22, and Cameron Ervin, 17, on two counts each of aggravated assault in the alleged knife attack against their parents. They’ve also been charged with first-degree arson. Police suspect the brothers tampered with the gas line in an effort to blow up the house and said there is evidence that they “tried to start a fire.” Cops say they have “several theories” after interviewing the pair, but police have yet to reveal a motive.

Yvonne Ervin was able to call 911 because, she said, Zachary was distracting the couple’s sons, Sgt. Rich Long told the AJC.

"You would never even expect that," neighbor Clint Miller told WSB-TV. "They're just an everyday normal family in the neighborhood."

Police find toddler's head in Chicago park lagoon

September 07, 2015

A child’s head was found Sunday in a Chicago park as police were searching for the remains of a toddler whose dismembered body parts were uncovered a day earlier in a lagoon.

Authorities told the Chicago Tribune that the head in Garfield Park was located near where a foot and hands were found.

Police started making the gruesome discoveries after they were called to the park on the city’s west side on Saturday afternoon, MyFoxChicago reported.

“We are searching the lagoon for human remains,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said late Saturday. “No word yet on how any of this happened.”

The limbs found in the water were in an advanced state of decomposition and were not clothed, authorities told the Chicago Tribune.

Dozens of officers could be seen wading through cattail reeds and waist-high water on Sunday, feeling the bottom with their hands. Elsewhere, an officer was walking the perimeter of the lagoon and picking up items to put in a paper bag.

Guglielmi said Sunday that depending on what searchers find, the lagoon might be drained to make sure there are no more remains in it.

Someone called 911 Saturday to report a small foot floating in the lagoon, the Chicago Tribune reported. It turned out to be the left foot of a toddler.

Police later found a right foot, right hand and left hand on the north side of the lagoon, the paper said. Also found nearby was a 20-pound weight.

The neighborhood's alderman, Jason Ervin, told reporters Sunday that investigators told him the child was likely between the ages of 2 and 4 years old.

Swamp'

Difficult for us outside the USA to give an opinion. But as you ask, I think the problem stems from the early days, wild west and all that, where guns were the norm. It just carried on.
And because it was written into your constitution it is considered 'un-American' to even suggest repealing the clause.

But there is a simple experiment you could try.

Ask any of your friends who normally carry guns on their person and who travel abroad to countries where this isn't allowed, how they feel when they are there.

Do they feel secure ?

Do they feel, well, naked, without their weapon,. Even when they know no one else around them is likely to be armed ?

And if they say they feel ok and it doesn't bother them, ask them why they feel the need to carry one at home.

I'll be very interested in the result.

Actually, I don't know if anyone I know who travels overseas has a concealed carry permit here. It is something most folks keep private.

There are some cities in the States that have much tougher gun laws than others, but it doesn't seem to make much difference in the level of violence.

Unless you have a total ban then it's hard to tell how it would effect the outcome.
But we all know that isn't going to happen.

At the moment I am having a problem with rats appearing in the garden. I considered applying for a shotgun license and buying a so called 'garden gun. A small 3 bore shotgun.
But no doubt the first time I send a rat to rat heaven I will have a swat team dropping in on me.

Not worth the trouble.

They are eating my shed. building empires in the cavity wall and using the glass fibre insulation to prepare for the winter.

I'm sure the plants have a hand in this scheme. They have been strangely silent when I greet them.

However, I am nothing if not generous and have been supplying the rebellious rodents with dishes of that blue grain that they find so enticing.

Soon the scurry of tiny feet will fall silent.

Now, time to kill the treacherous tomatoes.

To Swamp. I think the murder rate in the US (which at least is PRESENTED as exceptionally high) is due to not taking the 2nd amendment to its logical conclusion. Guns, owning and carrying, imo should be made mandatory for every adult citizen of sound mind, any exclusions from this civil duty to made individually (for instance because you lack both upper limbs etc.).

Logical, because then if you try your hand at let's say burglary, street robbing or go ahead and murder your cheating spouse there's a true deterrent: you most likely will have to dodge bullets yourself. (Which kinda takes the fun out of crime.)

I think US murder rates are elevated in areas where criminals by virtue of using firearms get an unfair advantage over law abiding citizens who do not own/carry a legal gun, and/or who lack the required skill and discipline in using this type of weapons to safeguard homes and family.

Caveat: one wasteful aspect of gun deaths in America imo comes from the culture of legal gun ownership itself. Some gun owners appear (to Dutch eyes and ears) too entitled, making the 2nd Amendment like holy writ, and its constitutional right as an absolute. I think it a good adaptation to modern times (and the increased power of guns) to make licences provisory on gun owners using gun safes and being trained at a national proficiency standard. A bit of a bother. But useful to keep your 3 year old from accidentally shooting the head off your 4 yr old, and irresponsible gun deaths in general.

cheesy So my solution to firearm murder rates is more guns. Though used with greater responsibility.
