Google’s Larry Page’s Search for a Flying Car is Over

April 25, 2017

by Paul Seaburn

Do a Google search on “flying car” today and up will pop a picture of a vehicle that is indeed flying but looks more like a cross between a pontoon boat and a drone than a car. That’s not surprising since Google founder and Alphabet (Google’s parent company) CEO Larry Page just unveiled the Kitty Hawk Flyer, an auspiciously named vehicle he claims will be available for sale in 2017. What will the first buyers get, Larry?

"We’ve all had dreams of flying effortlessly. I’m excited that one day very soon I’ll be able to climb onto my Kitty Hawk Flyer for a quick and easy personal flight."

“Personal flight” is a code phrase that usually means “one-seater.” A tweet this week by Kitty Hawk President and future technology guru Sebastian Thrun included a link to Kitty Hawk’s website showing the first video of a prototype of an electric Kitty Hawk Flyer flying. The lightweight (100 kg/220 lb) vehicle starts with a drone-like platform where eight electric-powered rotors are mounted. Those rotors will noisily lift the Flyer 10 meters (32 feet) off the ground and help reach its top speed of 25 mph (40 kmph). The “seat” looks like a motorcycle or jet-ski frame with handlebar controls for power and steering. Underneath are pontoons that give you a hint this is not a flying “car” for lifting you over urban potholes.

CERN Researchers Apologize For Destruction Of 5 Parallel Universes In Recent Experiment

GENEVA—Expressing deep regret over the catastrophic incident that occurred within the Large Hadron Collider, officials from the European Organization for Nuclear Research, also known as CERN, held a press conference Monday to apologize for the destruction of five parallel universes in a recent experiment. “We are sorry to report that in conducting research involving high-powered proton-proton collisions, we inadvertently caused the implosion of five universes nearly identical to our own,” said CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti, adding that billions of people worldwide might have experienced momentary vertigo around 9:45 a.m. as a result of several of their alternate identities being wiped from existence. “I’d like to emphasize that there is no need to worry, as we were able to contain the damage before our own time stream disintegrated into oblivion like the others. Furthermore, in order to perform an investigation, the LHC will be shut down for the remainder of the afternoon.” At press time, a team of CERN researchers in a parallel universe was preparing to perform the exact same experiment.

Wow! I did not know about the ILC! shocked

International Linear Collider

User Image
An overview graphic of the planned ILC based on the accelerator design of the Technical Design Report

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is a proposed linear particle accelerator. It is planned to have a collision energy of 500 GeV initially, with the possibility for a later upgrade to 1000 GeV (1 TeV). Although early proposed locations for the ILC were Japan, Europe (CERN) and the USA (Fermilab), the Kitakami highland, in the Iwate prefecture of northern Japan, has been the focus of ILC design efforts since 2013. The Japanese government is willing to contribute half of the costs, according to the coordinator of study for detectors at the ILC.

The ILC would collide electrons with positrons. It will be between 30 km and 50 km (19–31 mi) long, more than 10 times as long as the 50 GeV Stanford Linear Accelerator, the longest existing linear particle accelerator. The proposal is based on previous similar proposals from Europe, the U.S., and Japan.

Studies for an alternative project, the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) are also underway, which would operate at higher energies (up to 3 TeV) in a machine of length similar to the ILC. These two projects, CLIC and the ILC, have been unified under the Linear Collider Collaboration.

Cyber attack aimed at over 120 Israeli targets thwarted

By Anna Ahronheim

April 26, 2017 12:16

The attack behaved in the same manner as a previous cyber attack carried out by OILRIG, one of the most active hacking organizations sponsored by the Iranian government.

Israel has thwarted a large scale cyber attack targeting over 120 Israeli organizations in recent days, the National Authority for Cyber Defense announced on Wednesday.

The attacks, which ran between April 19th to April 23rd, came in the form of malicious emails originating from both the servers of an academic institution as well as a private commercial company and targeted various companies in the economy sector, government ministries, public institutions and private individuals in academia and research.

The bug (CVE-2017-0199) exploited a weakness in Microsoft systems, specifically Microsoft Word, and the company has worked to patch vulnerabilities identified by the attack. “Microsoft has released a security update that prevents the attacker from exploiting this vulnerability, and we recommend that you install it,” the agency said in a statement.

Simon the giant rabbit, destined to be world's biggest, dies on United Airlines flight

By Stephen Moyes and Nick Pisa
Published April 25, 2017

Scandal-hit United Airlines is facing a new PR disaster — after a valuable giant rabbit died mysteriously on one of its planes.

Three-foot Simon, destined to be the world’s biggest bunny, died in the cargo section of a Boeing 767 after flying out of Heathrow to a new celebrity owner in the US.

Breeder Annette Edwards, of Stoulton, Worcs, said: “He was fit as a fiddle. I’ve sent rabbits round the world, nothing like this happened.” United’s reputation is at rock bottom after film of a doctor being dragged from a jet went viral.

Edwards, 65, said 3ft Simon, expected to grow to be the world’s biggest rabbit, and was healthy when placed in the cargo hold.

But Simon, heading to a new celebrity owner in the US, was found dead after the Boeing 767-300 landed at O’Hare — the airport where a doctor was violently dragged off a UA plane.

Annette said: “Simon had a vet’s check-up three hours before the flight and was fit as a fiddle.

“Something very strange has happened and I want to know what. I’ve sent rabbits all around the world and nothing like this has happened before."

Annette, of Stoulton, Worcs, added: “The client who bought Simon is very famous. He’s upset.”

An airport source said news of Simon’s demise sparked a panic among UA staff, adding: “After the viral video no-one wanted responsibility for killing what was to be the world’s biggest rabbit.”

The airline now faces a legal claim from the Simon’s new owner and former Playboy model Annette, who once had plastic surgery to look like cartoon character Jessica Rabbit.

Simon, a continental giant rabbit, was 10 months old. He was on track to out-grow 4ft 4in dad Darius, the world’s biggest rabbit.

Continental giants cost £5,000 a year to keep. Annette’s rabbits are hired out at £500 a time.

United Airlines said: “We are reviewing this matter.”

Just imagine, you're sitting in a parking lot having mc breakfast with your gf and you look over and see one with no ears, glaring red eyes, and it hops like a rabbit.....sort've. Your (former/still good friend) gf throws food at it and it cautiously moves towards it but then stops and hisses. It then turns around, hops off towards the corner of the dark parking lot towards a black suv you didn't notice before. The suv then turns it's lights on and drives off.

Here kitty kitty. Yeah, it happened. undecided

Continued :

We got home and within a short amount of time were sitting there talking about it and a high pitched frequency hit us both at the same time. It felt like our ears were about to explode. After about 10 seconds, it went away.

I love animals, they love me. This was different. It was sort've mechanical.

Edit to add :

I shared an article similar to this with her not too long ago. No surprise to either of us.

New slogans for United Airlines

We have First Class, Business Class, and No Class.
Our prices can’t be beaten ... but our passengers can.
We put the hospital in hospitality.
We beat our passengers, not the competition.
We have an offer you can’t refuse. No, really.
Board as a doctor, leave as a patient.
Not enough seating? Prepare for a beating.
And you thought legroom was an issue.
If our staff needs a seat, we’ll drag you out by your feet.
We treat you like we treat your luggage.
Fight or flight.
You may have patients, but we don’t have patience.
We have red-eye and black-eye flights available.
Now serving free punch.

UFO sightings abound in California: 16K reports from 2001-2015 tops all states

Author: ‘Most people were very sincere about what they reported’

By Douglas Ernst - The Washington Times - Wednesday, April 26, 2017

The truth is out there — in California — if UFO aficionados are to be believed.

A new book by co-authors Cheryl Costa and Linda Miller Costa includes a list of all documented UFO sightings across the United States. The pair tallied nearly 16,000 sightings in The Golden State from 2001 through 2015 — the most in the nation — for “UFO Sightings Desk Reference.”

“We found that UFOs were sighted in every county in the United States,” Ms. Costa told a CBS affiliate in San Francisco on Tuesday. “Every county had at least one sighting sometime in the past 15 years.”

The authors gleaned their data from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), and the National UFO Reporting Center.

“Most people were very sincere about what they reported, about what they think they saw,” she told the station. “They weren’t jerking us around. But we understand the only proof some people are going to accept is a spaceship cracked up in the mall parking lot.”

The two women surmise that California’s weather allows people to be outdoors more often, which results in more eyes on the sky.

Santa Clara County in Northern California had the most sightings with 569, the station reported. San Franciscans reported 327 UFOs during the same period.
