On Saturday, a North Korean mid-range ballistic missile apparently failed shortly after launch, South Korea and the United States said, the third test-fire flop just this month but a clear message of defiance as a U.S. supercarrier conducts drills in nearby waters.

North Korea didn't immediately comment on the launch, though its state media on Saturday reiterated the country's goal of being able to strike the continental U.S.
The timing of the North's test was striking: Only hours earlier the U.N. Security Council held a ministerial meeting on Pyongyang's escalating weapons program. North Korean officials boycotted the meeting, which was chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

GOOD MORNING LOVELY UFOCASEBOOKERS

Syracuse New Times

The Monthly Pattern of UFOs

By Cheryl Costa 
Posted on April 28, 2017

People have been asking if my wife and co-author, Linda Miller Costa, and I had made any discoveries when we were researching our book, UFO Sightings Desk Reference: United States of America 2001-2015. We actually made a number of previously unknown discoveries about the observation of UFOs, including a significant one called the “month pattern.”

Since I started writing the New York Skies blog, I have found that New York experiences a high season for UFO sightings, June through September, peaking in July and August. My assumption, and the conjecture from many readers, suggested that this was a fair weather pattern. Nicer weather gave a better opportunity for more observers to be outside for a chance to see a UFO. We also took for granted that the every place would have a pattern like this.

Long-time Iowa farm cartoonist fired after creating this cartoon

Rick Friday has been giving farmers a voice and a laugh every Friday for two decades through his cartoons in Farm News.

Now the long-time Iowa farm cartoonist tells KCCI that he has been fired.

Friday announced Sunday that his job was over after 21 years in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.

FACEBOOK POST:
"Again, I fall hard in the best interest of large corporations. I am no longer the Editorial Cartoonist for Farm News due to the attached cartoon which was published yesterday. Apparently a large company affiliated with one of the corporations mentioned in the cartoon was insulted and cancelled their advertisement with the paper, thus, resulting in the reprimand of my editor and cancellation of its Friday cartoons after 21 years of service and over 1,090 published cartoons to over 24,000 households per week in 33 counties of Iowa.

"I did my research and only submitted the facts in my cartoon.

"That's okay, hopefully my children and my grandchildren will see that this last cartoon published by Farm News out of Fort Dodge, Iowa, will shine light on how fragile our rights to free speech and free press really are in the county."

Hello Swamprat,

Doesn't take much anymore does it? Poor man. To fire him for such a thing.

HAPPY MAY DAY LOVELY PEOPLE cheesy

Wired

Reality is not what it seems: the science behind why optical illusions mess with our minds

#TheDress and other optical illusions revealed that 'truth' is not always what we believe it to be

In February 2015, a photo posted on Tumblr went viral on a global scale and inadvertently spoke to the issue of the subjectivity of perception - and spoke loudly. The questions it raised about what we see generated thousands more questions across social media and on TV, as well as in the minds of people who kept their astonishment private. You may or may not have encountered the photo, but if you did you'll remember the image itself gave the phenomenon its name - The Dress.

It started with a wedding in Scotland. The mother of the bride had sent a photo of the dress she was going to wear to her daughter: a straightforward blue gown with stripes of black lace. Yet the photo itself was anything but straightforward for perception. The bride and groom couldn't agree on whether it was white with gold stripes or blue with black stripes. Baffled by their disagreement, they sent the image to people they knew, including their friend Caitlin McNeill, a musician who was performing at the wedding. She nearly missed her stage call because she and her bandmates were arguing about the image. After the wedding, McNeill posted the slightly washed-out photo on her Tumblr page with this caption: "Guys please help me - is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can't agree and we are freaking the fuck out." Not long after she published this, the post hit viral critical mass and the photo "broke the internet".

Over the following week The Dress ran its course as most viral phenomena do, with the out-of-nowhere virality becoming as much the story as the item that instigated it. Celebrities tweeted and feuded about it, Reddit threads proliferated and news organisations covered it. Those of us who research colour were suddenly inundated with requests for interviews, as it seemed everyone wanted to know why they saw the colours differently. Even the usually sober Washington Post published
a story headlined: "The inside story of the 'white dress, blue dress' drama that divided a planet." Yet in spite of the overheated excitement and debate, people were having an important conversation about science - to be precise, perceptual neuroscience.
