Today's Trivia

May Day!

May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on May 1. It is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival. It is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures. Dances, singing, and cake are usually part of the celebrations that the day includes.

Mayday! Mayday! Mayday!

The Mayday procedure word was originated in 1923, by a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport in London. The officer, Frederick Stanley Mockford, was asked to think of a word that would indicate distress and would easily be understood by all pilots and ground staff in an emergency. Since much of the traffic at the time was between Croydon and Le Bourget Airport in Paris, he proposed the word "Mayday" from the French "m'aider", a shortened version of "venez m'aider" (meaning "come and help me")

Before the voice call "Mayday", SOS was the Morse code equivalent of the Mayday call. In 1927, the International Radiotelegraph Convention of Washington adopted the voice call Mayday as the radiotelephone distress call in place of the SOS radiotelegraph (Morse code) call.

Question: What is there about the VA funding method and/or the mind-set of the VA hierarchy that would stimulate such behavior?

VA fires embattled La. director amid scandal, secret wait lists

By Tori Richards
Published May 02, 2017

The director of the beleaguered Shreveport VA hospital in Louisiana has been fired following a three-year tenure filled with scandal including accusations of covering up a secret wait-list, creating severe staffing shortages and refusing to buy essentials like vital signs machines, linens or mattresses.

Toby Mathew, who became director of Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in June 2014, was fired on April 13 due to “charges related to general misconduct, and failure to follow policy and provide effective oversight of the Center's credentialing and privileging program,” said an internal VA memo obtained by Fox News.

Overton Brooks started taking hits following an October 2014 report that patients routinely went days without sheets, pajamas or proper toiletries while the hospital spent millions on new furniture, TVs and solar panels. Next came the story of social worker Shea Wilkes, who discovered a secret wait-list in 2013 that had 2,700 names including 37 people who had died awaiting care. He pushed the VA inspector general to investigate, but instead the agency made Wilkes the target of a criminal investigation that lasted a year. It ended only after the Office of Special Counsel became involved. Mathew, who was director during that time, denied that a wait-list existed.

Wilkes went on to become a high-profile advocate for whistleblowers and has testified on Capitol Hill.

Spurred on by Wilkes' example, a high-ranking doctor wrote an exhaustive 16-page report dated Sept. 2, 2016 addressed to then-secretary Bob McDonald, the VA inspector general and two members of Congress. The report, reviewed by Fox News, said Mathew severely impacted the careers of 55 employees and specifically alleged that Mathew had “a constant pattern of bullying, intimidation, discrimination, harassment and retaliation” against staff, which violated policies and affecting patient health.

“Nursing service has had critical positions vacant during the 2-year tenure of Toby Mathew with vacancy rates as high as 50% for nurse assistants and constant 30% for registered nurses,” the report said. “He refused to ... fill the vacancies as requested. Toby Mathew brought in consultants paying as much as $10,500/month (more than most of our physicians make) for projects that did not help us.”

A lack of nurses had repercussions in the operating rooms, where unsterile items allegedly were found on a daily basis.

“The surgical teams are outraged by the absolute failure of leadership to address and improve the conditions ... Surgeries are being delayed or canceled or surgeons are forced to use alternate instrument sets,” the report said.

Elsewhere in the hospital, nurses lacked enough vital signs machines for every patient and mattresses allegedly were so worn out that patients were lying on bed frames. They allegedly were only replaced when bedsores erupted. Despite this, Mathew bought new flat-screen TV's for the director's conference room, the report said.

The doctor who wrote the report had asked for Mathew's removal while the investigation was underway. This didn't happen and on Jan. 4, a letter was sent to Secretary McDonald demanding to know why Mathew was still at work.

"You will be held responsible, whether in the Legislature, the courts or the media, for all that has happened here," the letter said. "YOU are responsible for all the failures, the misconduct, the lack of leadership and the mismanagement -- WHICH HAS CONTINUED TO THIS DAY."

A month later, Mathew was reassigned to a VA division office to await the outcome of an investigation. He worked there until he was fired.

Euthanasia drug found in dog food

From WebMD (4/28/17): “Party Animal is recalling dog food that tested positive for a pet euthanasia drug…The voluntary recall affects the company’s Cocolicious dog food brand…The affected products include 13-ounce cans of Cocolicious Beef & Turkey dog food (Lot #0136E15204 04, best by July 2019) and 13-ounce cans of Cocolicious Chicken & Beef dog food (Lot #0134E15 237 13, best by August 2019)… Party Animal is working with distributors and retailers to find out if any other beef-flavored foods are still being sold, and if so, to recall them immediately, the company said.”

https://jonrappoport.wordpress.com/2017/05/02/euthanasia-drug-found-in-dog-food/

“However what started to tip the scales was that the veterinarians who performed the euthanasias at the animal shelters started noticing it was taking more and more drugs to put these animals to sleep. They realized that somehow pets in animal shelters were building up an immunity to the medications used to end their lives. Typically veterinarians are called to shelters every week to euthanize between 10 and 200 animals (or more in larger centers) so this was where they saw the problems develop quite easily.”

User Image

“As such several investigations were launched to see how pets were building up immunities to the drugs. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) launched an investigation. They found that sodium pentobarbital (the drug often used to euthanize pets) passed through the rendering process and ended up in pet food. They admitted finding the drug in some pet foods and stated ‘several retail feeds were confirmed for the presence of phentobarbital which could only have come from euthanized animals.’ Most of these investigations were exposed by television news groups such as Seattle’s King 5, and KMOV in St. Louis, Missouri.”

i've been thinking about this for some time..this is a massive scale as well..It's not a stretch that this could go farther up the consumption ladder..I don't consume any hot dogs, ground beef or other processed meats..It takes a lot of organization which includes cooperation..don't buy meats from trucks either..God help us..when the whole truth comes out
;(

Thanx for the article and I am borrowing that gif..I'm short on imagination lately

GOOD MORNING ALL cheesy

StrangeCo
3 May 2017

This curious little Welsh tale was first published in 1892.

This reprint is from the magazine "Bye-Gones," for December 14 of that year.

The Rev. John S. Simon tells the following story in the Christmas number of the Methodist Recorder. The story was told to him by his father, the late Rev. John Simon, who was born at Rhewl, and was a well-known preacher in the Vale of Llangollen :—

"One morning, many years ago, an excited group of villagers assembled under the yew trees in the churchyard. An extraordinary event had occurred. During the night a man who lived in a neighbouring village had been aroused from his sleep by a mysterious person who had entered his room. Following a beckoning finger, he had risen from his bed and hastened to Llantysilio church. To his surprise the church was open. Through the windows beamed ghostly light. He listened. He heard them denounce the then possessor of the Hall. He should not die a natural death; when he died the Hall would be seized by a stranger who had no legal right to it. These words the terror-stricken man distinctly heard, and then he retreated and fled to his village,

The news was soon whispered abroad, and my father used to describe the solemn conclave under the yew trees, and the profound discussions of the rustic sages. Time rolled on. The owner of the Hall did not seem ‘one penny the worse’ for ghostly denunciation. One day, however, he was in his cellar decanting wine, when he cut his hand severely with a broken bottle. The wound was obstinate and would not heal. He went away from home, but the hand grew worse. Finally he died. On the day of the funeral a gentleman of military appearance presented himself at the Hall to take part in the ceremony. He was not known. The funeral cortege set out. A keen eye might have noticed that the stranger did not Join the procession. When the mourners returned to the Hall they found that they could not enter. The place was shut. The military man had taken possession. It was subsequently understood that he claimed the Hall in a stake he had won when gambling with the late proprietor. We believe that the estate was thrown into Chancery, remaining there for many long years. To the best of my recollection, I have given facts which sceptics, having purged their souls by repentance, may ponder.”

There is a footnote to this story. In 1821 Thomas Jones, the owner of Llangollen Hall, died. Although it was believed he had made out a will, this document could not be found. The following year, an old woman named Catherine Jones (who was better-known by the delightful name of "Kitty Taerty,") dreamed that Jones' will had been placed in his coffin, under the deceased's head. Locals found her story credible enough for a group of men to turn resurrectionist. One night, they excavated Jones' grave, but a search of the coffin found nothing. While undertaking this ghoulish task, the nervous men saw a...something...moving in the churchyard.

They did not bother to investigate. The would-be grave-robbers reburied the coffin as quickly as possible and made a hasty exit.

Jones had no near relatives, so the estate wound up in Chancery, and was eventually sold.

Mystery 'shipwreck graveyard' spotted on Google Earth by UFO hunter

AN avid UFO hunter looking for signs of alien activity on Google Earth believes he has discovered three new shipwrecks.

By Jon Austin
PUBLISHED: 14:40, Thu, May 4, 2017

Scott C Waring posted his discovery on website ufosightingsdaily.com which usually features details of alleged UFO or alien sightings.

The alien chaser highlighted three dark, boat-shaped objects in a shallow area off the coast of Costa Verde, Mexico.

He posted today: "You know me... always searchings for the hidden mysteries of life.

"Well today I stumbled upon something thats not a UFO, but is still absolutely amazing due to its size."

The first alleged wreck was 138 metres long, according to Mr Waring - more than half the length of the Titanic which was 269 metres in length.
