GOOD MORNING Z, CLIFF, SYS, SWAMPRAT, PURR & ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL MEMBERS.

Mysterious Universe

The Cursed Devil’s Pool of Australia

May 30, 2017

by Brent Swancer

Are there evil places in this world, ones that have an insidious yearning to pull in victims to their doom? Can there be some sort of energy that permeates a place to make it a cursed place inhospitable to outsiders? There are locations upon this planet of ours that ask these questions, imploring us to ponder such things with the web of strangeness and death they weave. One such locale is a rather famous tourist location, which under the veneer of its natural beauty and intoxicating natural splendor holds tales of ancient evil and modern horror.

Out along the Bruce Highway, 60km south of Cairns, in northern Queensland, Australia, three streams rush down from atop Mt. Bartle Frere, meander through untouched rainforest wilderness, and converge among some large boulders near a nondescript town called Babinda. What has come to be known as the Babinda Boulders are well-known for the inviting, crystal clear waters of the streams and the idyllic, picturesque natural beauty to be found all around, which have served to attract droves of tourists to the spot every year. However, what many of the photographers, campers, and hikers at this peaceful spot, as well as the swimmers wading through calmer portions of the pool might not be aware of is that the site goes by another, far more ominous nickname of “The Devil’s Pool,” and has been feared by the Aborigines of the area for centuries, perhaps with good reason, as this is a place long steeped with death, foreboding, and a dark reputation.

The native people of the area have long shunned the deceptively quiet pool, and one Aboriginal legend is particularly tragic. According to the dark tale, there was once a young, beautiful woman from the Yidinji tribe named Oolana, and this maiden married a respected tribal elder named Waroonoo. When she met a handsome younger man from another tribe she set forth into a torrid affair, running off away into the wilderness with her newfound lover. Unfortunately for her, Oolana’s husband was a powerful man within her tribe, and he sent out search parties to hunt the pair down to put an end to their adulterous tryst. When they were finally surrounded and separated at the Babinda Boulders, Oolana is then said to have thrown herself into the water and drowned rather than face a bleak life without her true love. According to the Aboriginal tales, she has never really left, and still prowls these waters, looking to lure young men to a watery grave.

This legend has become notable in light of the fact that over the years a large number of young men have mysteriously met their deaths here, and since 1959 at least 17 people, and more still in old newspaper clippings, have drowned here under decidedly strange circumstances. In many cases the victims are said to be forcefully pulled and held under as if by unseen hands. The site is said to be particularly aggressive towards men and those that disrespect the pool in any way. In one story a young man visiting the area took a kick at one of the signs there, after which he slipped, fell into a deep pool, and drowned. Other mysterious deaths here are not as clear, such as that of 24-year-old Peter McGann, who in 1979 was climbing up a boulder, jumped a small gap, and slipped to go tumbling into the water below, after which he simply vanished without a trace. It would take teams of divers over 5 weeks to finally find his body lodged down in the murk at the bottom of the pool. One rescue worker who helped in the search, police diver Peter Tibbs, explained the scene thus:

I’ve been called on four times to try and find bodies down there but one of the most interesting of the cases was a young fella called, Patrick McGann. We thought we knew he was in there, but we couldn’t get to the body because the water is so cold, it’s so deep and it flows so fast. And so eight or ten times we went down and we eventually cut the logs out of the place underwater and on the last day after we’d almost given up, we cut the last log that was in the chute and the body floated freely. And that was five weeks and five days from the time he’d gone missing, so it wasn’t a pretty sight, but it was a great relief to get the body out and satisfy the family.

There was also the case of a young couple that was swept away by a freak flash flood at the site as they were taking in the view, with the woman surviving but the man never heard from again. Perhaps the most recent and dramatic account of a mysterious death at the Devil’s Pool is that of 23-year-old Tasmanian naval seaman James Bennett, who had been out for a day exploring the area with some friends in 2010. The group had jumped over a safety railing to sit in a natural tub of churning water known locally as the “Washing Machine.” According to one of James’ friends, he had been swimming in a calm area nearby when he was suddenly and violently yanked backwards, as if by “an invisible hand,” which seemed to be dragging him back towards a section of churning white water at the back of the pool. James then allegedly reached up to grab a branch, which snapped, after which his head went under water and he just struggled there suspended helplessly in the water for no apparent reason, with just the tips of his fingers protruding from the surface as he struggled to come up for air.

He would remain like this while his friends tried to reach out to him and offer their extended legs, before sinking down into the depths to his fate. It would not be until 3 days later that the body of James Bennett would be found floating about in a calmer section of the stream, and a plaque would be erected in the aftermath, eerily reading “He came for a visit and stayed forever.” Most of the area is now closed off, although the inviting locale constantly draws visitors in.

Such tragic incidents are so plentiful that the area has had numerous railings and warning signs set up over the years to denote the places that are safe for swimming. Why so many have suddenly drowned in the mostly calm pools here depends largely on who you ask. Officials will tell you that it is all due to fast running water, freak flash floods, or untamed currents stirred up by the natural lay of the stream and the boulders dotting it. This could in turn pull people under and pin them against the rocks or wedge them under sunken logs, drowning them in a fashion that could quite possibly be witnesses s some sort of mysterious, unseen force. The high oxygenation of the water here also does swimmers no favors, and all of this is said to make the conditions in the off-limits areas difficult for even the most experienced swimmers to navigate. Indeed, even the divers that have entered the pool to look for bodies have been met with harrowing water conditions at times, despite typically being solidly tethered to the land by rope. One local official said of the dangers of the pool thus:

They call it the Washing Machine where he went in because it goes around and around. It’s all bubbles so there is no buoyancy. It’s dangerous water. It sucks you under. You always see people swimming in the dangerous holes. You don’t know when a flood could come down from up top.

Somerset Live

UFO spotted hovering over Cley Hill near Frome

The video, taken by a Frome resident, shows a streak of light circling over the National Trust owned land in Corsley.

ByJames Wood,
30 MAY 2017

Located at the edge of the Longleat Estate in Warminster, Cley Hill has long been thought of as a hot spot for UFOs.

The resident who took this video believes this streak of light could be one such UFO – although he is a little sceptical.

Speaking to Somerset Live, he said: “I took this video from my house in Frome last night. It was over the Cley Hill area I think, which is always a hotspot for UFOs”

“Probably a drone with a fancy flame effect tail or something. It's been spotted a few times locally.”

For more than 40 years, this lofty hilltop has been a meeting place for UFO spotters, all drawn by talk of lights, flying objects and what have been described as ‘other unidentifiable oddities’.

Nigel Vile, a local rambler, regularly goes on walks around the area.

Speaking of the hill, he said: “Some experts have gone as far as to describe the nearby town of Warminster as Britain’s UFO capital on account of a phenomena first encountered in the mid-1960s that became known as the ‘Warminster Thing’.

“Strange noises were heard in the skies above the town, and an equally strange shimmering light was observed in the vicinity.”

It’s not just in Warminster that these UFOs are spotted, however. There are many towns around Frome that have similar experiences.

'The Great Deal maker' ?

Pres trump is always letting us know that he is a great deal maker.

Perhaps my colleagues across the pond can explain the logic of the following.

Trump is considering selling off half of America's oils reserve.

America is still importing oil from a variety of sources including the OPEC countries.

Oil is at it's lowest price per barrel it has been for a long time.

Does selling off one's reserve at this time seem like a 'great deal' to anyone here ?

He also keeps prattling on about NATO countries 'not paying their dues'.

The real question, and one that you guys should be asking, is 'Mr president, we have one million three hundred thousand plus in our military. We spend money on defense than the next seven countries added together. You are asking for billions of dollars for further expansion of the military. As the next (first) attack on the American mainland will come out of a clear blue sky, why do you think it is necessary to spend so much on weapons that will not be of any use to us in a nuclear attack ?

America is never going to be attacked by conventional forces. Due to it's geographical location it would not be practical to do so.

Can't you think of better ways to spend half a triillion Dollars ?

If you'd bothered to investigate this further, the oil he wants to sell off is from the strategic reserves that are now overflowing.

We have no place to store the amount that is designated to be taken from all sources by statute. We are pumping oil at the same rate we did in the 60's. (this is from life long friends who work in the oil patch) It would help undermine OPEC and give a boost to the problem of our debt.

As far as what we spend on weaponry, it's none of your damned business. We've had save your bacon twice in the past because you weren't willing to see what level of protection you needed and got caught with your pants around your ankles!

When Germany and a few other Muzzie countries start really kicking your ass, make sure you remember who it is that has to save your bacon!

Besides you folks have enough of your own problems to solve:

Lone,

You are missing my point, why carry on paying to import oil from outside when you have all this oil in reserve ?

Why not stop paying for imports and use it yourself ?

...As far as what we spend on weaponry, it's none of your damned business. We've had save your bacon twice in the past because you weren't willing to see what level of protection you needed and got caught with your pants around your ankles!...

You don't change much.

Look at it this way, if Germany had won and taken over the whole of Europe, Russia and Africa, then America would have been next on Hitler's hit list. Had to be.

And there would have been no one around to help you out.

Hitler would have blockaded the USA and gradually forced a foothold and that would have been the end of you.

Think not ?

Those thousands of miles of ocean would not protect you . As they did then and do now.

Your President is relying on all that water protecting you if he makes a move on North Korea. And what happens to Japan, South Korea , China and the Philippines doesn't really interest him.

Even Pres Duertte pointed that out.

We have problems ? what problems ?

All in a days work for us. Who ever gets into power things will roll on. And we can always have another election if deemed necessary.

Oh yes, almost forgot to ask.

Trump wanted to ban people from eight predominately Muslim countries from entering America without 'extreme vetting'. on the pretext that someone from them may cause problems in the USA. No one from those countries has.

Yet he does he not include Saudi Arabia, home of Bin laden and fifteen of the nineteen people who carried out the most heinous crime in American history, in fact he goes there on his first foreign visit and sings their praises. And praises Islam. Not quite what he was saying on the campaign trail.

A country which still beheads criminals, flogs women if caught driving and flogs and jails people who are caught having a beer.

Now, why do you think he would be so keen on buddying up to such a regime ?

Just follow the money.

Hal,
No you missed the point. 9 of the major oil companies in the Mideast are mostly owned by US corporate interests. If you haven't figured out that using everybody elses oil now makes ours more valuable later your economics needs to be relearned. Also the different types and classifications of oil ( Light Crud mostly there) make refining oil from certain Mid East countries an easier process due to quality.

If you haven't noticed there ain't too many nuclear wars going on. It's ALL conventional weapons and will continue to be that way. The only real nuclear threats in the world now are N. Korea and Iran.! No one else is stupid enough to cause mutual nuclear destruction. How we handle that is a whole 'nuther question I'm not going into here!

The only countries that pay there full share of NATO (2% GDP) are the US, Estonia, Poland, UK and Greece.

Also 76% of every NATO move ends up on our dime!

Germany didn't win so you're roasting a red herring!

When you stop the crap Muslims are pulling in your country maybe I might listen to comments on why we still have Saudi ties. Could it be that they actually pay for what they buy from us? Maybe! Hell, you folks can't even state your opposition to this carnage out loud without going to jail for "oppressive behavior on a minority'! That minority part will soon be a thing of the past quicker than you realize!

Your whole country is backwards!! You prosecute citizens who are disgruntled and coddle your enemy when they commit crimes so don't tell me we're wrong here! When judges release vicious rapists because it's part of their culture your ass is in a large sling about to be gutted!

Lone

PS forgot to add. Nice Mayor of London you got there! People who ain't Muzzie must be real comfortable huh??

GOOD MORNING LOVELY ROBOTS grin

International Business Times

Is Artificial Intelligence Dangerous? Device Warns It's Wearer When Robots Impersonate Humans

By Juliana Rose Pignataro @julie_pignataro
On 05/30/17 AT 3:47 PM

Just in case artificial intelligence turns on humankind, researchers have engineered a warning sign. Australian technology agency DT created a device that cautions its wearer when artificial intelligence is impersonating a human – just by sending a chill down the person’s back.

“The post-truth era is just getting started,” DT wrote in a blog post introducing the technology. “Near the end of 2017 we’ll be consuming content synthesized to mimic real people. Leaving us in a sea of disinformation powered by AI and machine learning. The media, giant tech corporations and citizens already struggle to discern fact from fiction. And as this technology is democratized it will be even more prevalent.”

The company’s answer to that? The “Anti-AI AI.” The small device, situated behind the ear, is designed to alert its wearer when the voice they are hearing is artificial intelligence.

“We wanted the device to give the wearer a unique sensation that matched what they were experiencing when a synthetic voice is detected,” DT said in the blog post. “By using a 4x4 mm thermoelectric Peltier plate, we were able to create a noticeable chill on the skin near the back of the neck without drawing too much current.”

Artificial intelligence as a whole is fraught with complications, so much so that experts often argue about the ethics and safety of the industry. Many scientists and engineers have cautioned about the future of artificial intelligence, including John McAfee, a computer programmer who developed the first ever commercial anti-virus software.

“The goal of AI – a self-conscious entity – contains within it the necessary destruction of its creator,” McAfee wrote in an April opinion piece. “With self-consciousness comes a necessary self-interest. The self-interest of any AI created by the human mind, will instantly recognize the conflict between that self-interest and the continuation of the human species.”

Elon Musk, the founder of private space venture SpaceX, also argued that artificial intelligence could turn malignant. Musk has said that the technology is humanity’s “biggest existential threat” his Mars colonization would essentially serve as an escape hatch should artificial intelligence betray humanity. Musk also created a nonprofit called OpenAI, a group that aimed to “advance digital intelligence in the way that it is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole."

The future of artificial intelligence is so uncertain that in January, a team of tech billionaires created a $27 million fund to research AI’s safety and ethics.

“There’s an urgency to ensure that AI benefits society and minimizes harm,” LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman said in a statement at the time. “AI decision making can influence many aspects of our world – education, transportation, health care, criminal justice and the economy – yet data and code behind those decisions can largely be invisible.”

Supplemental material to our paper "Trajectory Planning for Quadrotor Swarms" by Wolfgang Hönig, James A. Preiss, T.K. Satish Kumar, Gaurav S. Sukhatme, and Nora Ayanian; submitted to IEEE Transactions on Robotics Special Issue on Aerial Swarm Robotics.

We describe a method for multi-robot trajectory planning in
known, obstacle-rich environments. We demonstrate our approach on a quadrotor swarm navigating in a warehouse setting. Our method consists of three stages: 1) roadmap generation which generates sparse roadmaps annotated with possible inter-robot collisions; 2) discrete planning which resolves ordering conflicts between robots; and 3) continuous refinement that creates smooth trajectories. We account for the downwash effect of quadrotors, allowing safe flight in dense formations. We demonstrate computational
efficiency in simulation with up to 200 robots and physical
plausibility with an experiment on 32 nano-quadrotors. To our knowledge, our approach is the first solution which can compute safe and smooth trajectories for hundreds of quadrotors in dense environments with obstacles in a few minutes.
