New Tory MEP for the East Midlands is an expert in UFO sightings and poltergeists

As well as his work with the International Metaphysical University, he is best known for a range of parapsychology books including titles such as Paranormal Surrey and A History of Alien Activity from Sightings to Abductions to Global Threat

by Caroline Mortimer
5 July 2017

A paranormal expert who has written several books on poltergeists and UFO sightings has become the Conservatives’ newest MEP.

Rupert Matthews, who until the end of last month was a lecturer for an online-only university which focuses on the paranormal, was appointed to fill a vacant seat representing the East Midlands after Andrew Lewer became an MP.

As well as his work with the International Metaphysical University, he is best known as the author of a range of parapsychology books including titles such as Paranormal Surrey and A History of Alien Activity from Sightings to Abductions to Global Threat.

He has said he himself does not have a “generalised belief in the paranormal” and instead is merely “presenting the evidence” in his books. He also writes popular history books.

But these are not the only controversial views the politician appears to hold – he once claimed European Commission had the power to send troops to the streets of Britain to prevent it leaving the EU, The Times reported.

Earlier this year, he also claimed the EU was using the blanket term “Nazis” to avoid “confronting the reality” that Germans did “unspeakable things to their fellow humans”.

The former Tory councillor originally stood to be a Conservative MEP in 2009 – then again in 2014 – and was placed third on the party’s list of candidates for the East Midlands.

The party only won enough votes to get their top two candidates into parliament, so Mr Matthews missed out until 2011 when then Tory MEP Roger Helmer announced he was stepping down.

Under European Parliament rules, an MEP is normally replaced by the next person down on the list but the party said they wanted to re interview Mr Matthews’ to assess his suitability.

This annoyed Mr Helmer, who promptly cancelled his resignation and defected to Ukip.

Mr Helmer gave his full support to Mr Matthews’ appointment, telling The Times: “He makes a thing of being the great British eccentric.

“I go to the ballet, he dresses up in medieval armour. Good luck to him.”

Putin Warns Trump: 'Expose Elite Pedophiles or I Will Begin Naming Names'

http://www.neonnettle.com/news/2349-putin-warns-trump-expose-elite-pedophiles-or-i-will-begin-naming-names-

Ahead of this historic rendezvous, Russian President Putin has made one thing clear; that Trump must "expose pedophiles in Washington D.C." otherwise Russia will begin "naming names".According to Maxim Suchkov, a member of the Moscow-based Russian International Affairs Council, no specific agenda has been set for the meeting, however, a list of "deliverables" is due to be discussed including regional issues such as Ukraine and Syria, establishing military channels of communication, and economic relations, and the "child sex trafficking problem" in the US.Suchkov added that these matters would be discussed to determine "what world would the US and Russia want to live in peacefully".

Scientists Have Uncovered The Atomic Structure of a Key Alzheimer's Protein For The First Time

This is huge.

by PETER DOCKRILL
6 JUL 2017

For the first time, scientists have revealed the chemical structure of one of the key markers of Alzheimer's disease, capturing high-resolution images of the abnormal tau protein deposits suspected to be behind Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative conditions.

The results will now give scientists an unprecedented glimpse at how these harmful deposits function at a molecular level, and could lead to a number of new treatments to prevent them from forming – and in doing so, help to combat Alzheimer's and dementia.

"This is a tremendous step forward," says one of the team, Bernardino Ghetti from Indiana University.

"It's clear that tau is extremely important to the progression of Alzheimer's disease and certain forms of dementia. In terms of designing therapeutic agents, the possibilities are now enormous."

In the new study, researchers led by the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in the UK extracted tau protein filaments from the brain of a deceased patient with a confirmed diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, and imaged them using a technique called called cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM).

Hacked by ISIS?!

Leon County, Florida is the home of Tallahassee, the state capital.

ISIS-linked group claims hack of Leon County website

No important data was compromised in a hack Thursday of Leon County’s government website by an ISIS-linked group.

Up for only minutes on the Leon County homepage, the message accompanied by a photo of North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un and audio of a 1964 Ronald Reagan speech was gone as quickly as it appeared.

Leon County Administrator Vince Long said no information was compromised and the hack appears to be a random, surface-level breach of the website.

Important data is hidden behind a separate firewall. Internal and contract digital security workers are addressing the hack.

“It appears that it was a defacement of the website, which in the realm of hacking is a bit more superficial in terms of the integrity of the information on our website,” Long said.

The message said the website was “hacked by Moroccan Islamic Union-Mail. The time of the monopoly of nuclear weapons is over. If North Korea is bombed, Washington will be bombed too. It is stupid for America to be ruled by an idiot like Trump and remember the North Korean it is ruled by Kim, the wise man who is not afraid of anyone.”

A link at the bottom of the text leads to a Facebook page supposedly run by the Moroccan group claiming the hack. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the Moroccan Islamic Union-Mail is a group that actively hacks for ISIS.

The group has been working on breaching websites, particularly government ones, around the world for years. Its Facebook page includes links to previous hacking mirrors of the sites it has invaded.

A post written in Arabic Wednesday talks about how the group is undergoing secret cyber-attacks over the next two days, directing messages to the American government. In the post, the group claims the hacks are only for “entertainment and experiments,” and to make an index of the “most important sites in the world.”

A post on Thursday indicates the hack was an “overthrowing of the Leon Consulate of Florida.”

Stearns County, Minnesota’s website was hacked similarly earlier this week at about 2:30 a.m., according to the St. Cloud Times.

Officials there confirmed a similar message from the Moroccan group with the message “this is not an attack we are just testing some tricks.”

The Large Hadron Collider Just Detected a New Particle That's Heavier Than a Proton

It's a big one.

by MIKE MCRAE
7 JUL 2017

The Large Hadron Collider has once again done what it does best – smash bits of matter together and find new particles in the carnage.

This time physicists have come across a real charmer. It's four times heavier than a proton and could help challenge some ideas about how this kind of matter sticks together.

We've seen a lot of interesting new particles from CERN's Large Hadron Collider "beauty" (LHCb) collaboration, which is a little sister to the ATLAS and CMS experiments that brought us the famous Higgs boson a few years back.

The experiments run in CERN's colliders all involve accelerating matter and then bringing it to a quick stop. The resulting burst of energy results in a shower of particles with different properties, most of which we're pretty familiar with.

Running these experiments over and over again and doing the maths on the sizes and behaviours of the particles as they form and interact with one another can occasionally provide something different.

We can now officially add a new kind of baryon to the zoo of particles, one that was already predicted to exist but never before seen.

The two baryons you're no doubt most familiar with are the ones that make up an atom's nucleus, called protons and neutrons.

Baryons are effectively triplets of smaller particles called quarks, which are elementary particles meaning they aren't made up of anything smaller themselves.

Quarks come in a variety of flavours, oddly called up, down, top, bottom, charm, and strange. It's combinations of these that give us different bosons. Current models predict there are a bunch of ways quarks can make baryons, with some more common than others.

Protons consist of two ups and a down quark, while neutrons are two downs and an up. These quarks stick together under what's called the strong nuclear force, which is caused by the swapping of particles called gluons. Never let it be said that physicists lack a sense of humour.

This new baryon – made when two charm quarks and a single up bound together – was given the less whimsical name Xi cc++, so they can't all be winners.

Quarks have different masses, and charm is a beefy one. That makes this baryon a touch on the heavy side, which is good news for particle physicists.

"Finding a doubly heavy-quark baryon is of great interest as it will provide a unique tool to further probe quantum chromodynamics, the theory that describes the strong interaction, one of the four fundamental forces," said Giovanni Passaleva, the spokesperson for the LHCb collaboration.

Seeing how this particle keeps itself together compared to the predictions made by current models will help give the going theories a good shake.

Being made of two heavy quarks should give Xi cc++ a slightly different structure to protons and neutrons.

"In contrast to other baryons, in which the three quarks perform an elaborate dance around each other, a doubly heavy baryon is expected to act like a planetary system, where the two heavy quarks play the role of heavy stars orbiting one around the other, with the lighter quark orbiting around this binary system," says former collaboration spokesperson Guy Wilkinson.

If you're wondering where this baryon has been hiding all this time, like many particles it doesn't hang around very long. It wasn't seen directly, but was recognised by the particles it broke into.

The LHCb experiment is a champion at spotting these kinds of decay products, as well as making heavy quarks.

The discovery has a high statistical significance at 7 sigma. Physicists break out the champagne at 5 sigma, so we can be pretty confident Xi cc++ was produced.

If you're playing Standard Model bingo, that's one more to cross off your list.

This research has been submitted to Physical Review Letters.

Skeletons of 5,000-year-old Chinese ‘giants’ discovered by archaeologists

The people are thought to have been unusually tall and strong

by Loulla-Mae Eleftheriou-Smith
6 July 2017

Archaeologists in eastern China have found 5,000-year-old skeletons of people experts say would have been unusually tall and strong.

According to the measurements of bones in the graves at the site in Shandong province, a number of the people would have measured at 1.8m or taller, with one man estimated to have been 1.9m, Xinhua news agency reported.

Although not particularly unusual by 21st-century Western standards, it is thought their height would have seen them tower over many of their contemporaries.

“This is just based on bone structure. If he was a living person, his height would certainly exceed 1.9m,” Fang Hui, head of Shandong University’s school of history and culture, told the agency.

Locals in Shandong see their height as a defining characteristic. A study conducted in 2015 found the average height of 18 men to be 1.753m, compared to the country’s national average of 1.72m.

Confucius, who was born in what is now the Shandong province, was reportedly 1.9m tall.

The excavation site in the village of Jiaojia, near Jinan City, has been found to hold 104 houses, 205 graves and 20 sacrificial pits. A number of colourful pots and jade articles were also recovered.

Archaeologists have been uncovering artefacts and bones from the late Neolithic people since last year, who are understood to have lived mostly off pigs and millet.

The people living in the region 5,000 years ago are believed to have had relatively comfortable lives; the rows of houses that have been excavated suggested their living quarters had separate bedrooms and kitchens, according to China Daily. (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2017-07/04/content_29985498.htm)

The area is also believed to have been the political, cultural and economic centre of the Chinese region.

Taller men were found buried in larger graves, which could be due to them having a higher status and having access to better food.
