GOOD MORNING ALL!

Payson Roundup

Box Canyon rescue

by Alexis Bechman roundup staff reporter
Jul 25, 2017

It is not everyone’s dream to rappel out of a helicopter as it hovers over a narrow canyon, a storm brewing in the distance.

But Darrell Floyd, who is in his 70s, has trained for just that crisis for years — but never got to put that training into practice.

So Thursday afternoon, when the call came out that a man had injured his back while hiking through Box Canyon east of Payson, Tonto Rim Search and Rescue Commander Bill Pitterle sent Floyd in to get him out.

“He is one of my toughest members,” Pitterle said of Floyd.

Floyd is one of four technical request technicians (TRT) with TRSAR, meaning every few months he practices with the Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter crew out at Shoofly Ruins. As the copter hovers over the parking lot, Floyd hooks into a harness and rappels a hundred feet or so down a climbing rope.

Floyd, who lost the lower part of one leg while serving in the Vietnam War, is one of the oldest active members of TRSAR.

If he is around, Floyd responds to nearly every call out for volunteer help.

“It is always a good day when Darrell shows up,” Pitterle said. “He maintains the rope equipment trailer and often tows it to missions.”

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, one of TRSAR’s own volunteers needed help.

Larry Johnston had taken his family down Box Canyon, a picturesque narrow canyon dotted with waterfalls that is popular with experienced anglers and canyoneering groups.

The group had dropped in and was rappelling down the falls, swimming through the pools and hiking. Somewhere between the R Bar C Ranch and Camp Tontozona, Johnston’s brother slammed his back against a rock while rappelling, Pitterle said.

From a mission in the same area several years ago, Pitterle knew it would take hours to set up ropes and pull the man 300 feet out of the canyon.

The DPS Ranger helicopter crew said they could lift the man out. They flew in, picked up Floyd and dropped him off in the canyon. He packed the man up in a litter and hooked a 100-foot rope to the litter and DPS carried both out to a parking lot.

And with 100C being the boiling point of water, things must be getting quite uncomfortable.

Why ids the average number of legs on a human being 1.999 ?

But never 2.001.

ZETAR,

I did. Just thought I'd throw it in anyway.

Anyone doubting the rise in temperatures need only look around the Mediterranean and the Middle East.

Wild fires everywhere.

I hear airlines are becoming a bit concerned by this rise.

And I do recall from my early air travel days in hot places, that they used to have to wait until the cool evening air before departing due to the loss of power uncured by very warm air.

Of course, the deniers will point to the average figures and say 'no noticeable increase'.

Because more people lose legs from disease, war, and accidents than people who are born with more than two or grow an extra one.....
