GOOD MORNING FELLOW LOONIE BIRDS grin

The Gazette

Watching the skies for mysterious UFOs
27 July 2017

Blackpool is now a growing hub for those who want to believe, as a network for reported UFO sightings opens in the resort.

Tim Bartrop, 52, founded the Lancashire UFO Sightings Network in his youth, and now hopes to revive the club to provide the people of Blackpool with a viable alternative to the Ministry Of Defence’s UFO desk, which closed down in 2009.

He said: “The Ministry of Defence closed down its UFO service in 2009 and since then nobody has had anything to report UFO sightings to.

“That’s why I have opened this up in Blackpool.”

Tim, who lives off Central Drive, was inspired to form a group for believers to report their findings after his first and only encounter with the unexplained while growing up in Darnall, Sheffield.

He said: “I decided to call for my best friend at the time , who lived three doors up from me.

“As we were both star gazers we decided to go to the bottom of the street where the park is to get a better view of the sky above Darnall.

“We both had noticed this bright light in the sky, as well as other stars moving towards us.

“They were rectangle in shape and three of them joined up. It was very bright, with no sound. They must have been about 500 yards above the houses.”

He now hopes to encourage the people of Blackpool to come forward with stories of their own UFO sightings.

He said: “Blackpool and Lancashire is a hotspot for UFO sightings.”

Two UFOs were said to have been spotted in the sky over Fleetwood in 2015, and one over Lytham and St Annes the year before.

People who wish to report a UFO sighting to the Lancashire UFO Sighting Network (LUFOS) can email report.lufos@gmail.com.

Robots, Start Your Engines!

Roborace is creating a new motorsport to accelerate the arrival of self-driving cars

By Jesse Dunietz, Larry Greenemeier on July 28, 2017

There’s nothing like a throw-down to push new technologies out to the masses. A team of high-tech gearheads is applying that age-old adage to self-driving cars, with plans to launch a new motorsport that will pit robotic cars head-to-head on long, winding racetracks.

Roborace—which refers both to the sport and its organizer—wants to create an autonomous version of Formula 1 racing, where the superstars are computer programmers whose code unleashes the speed, precision and efficiency needed to take the checkered flag. A key by-product of those victories: innovations that accelerate the path of driverless passenger cars to market.

Roborace’s plan to be the first championship for autonomous cars has a lot going for it, although also plenty of speed bumps to negotiate. On the plus side, the sight of a pack of driverless speed demons successfully tearing up the track at over 320 kilometers per hour could inspire greater confidence in self-driving technology. Likewise intriguing is the idea that such an event would be as much a coding competition as a car race. The biggest questions, though, surround the engineering challenges of flawless autonomous driving at high speed. Also, it is not a given that success on the track will translate to self-driving passenger vehicles, which must contend with pedestrians, traffic signals and severe weather.

A self-driving car relies on a network of sensors placed throughout the vehicle to gather data about its location and surroundings. Artificial intelligence algorithms use this data to note objects in the immediate vicinity, plan a course to avoid them and ultimately convert that plan into the actions of steering, accelerating and braking. The vehicles that Roborace is developing feature five light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors, which use pulsed lasers to measure distance; two radars that bounce high-frequency electromagnetic waves off objects; 18 ultrasonic sensors that rely on sound waves; two optical speed sensors; six cameras; and GPS. Roborace’s machines—called Robocars—rely on high-end onboard computers capable of performing up to 24 trillion operations per second to make split-second decisions based on the sensor data.

The southern heat wave finally broke, 83 degrees forecasted for Saturday 29th.

That is one for Zetar's and ghostofed's weather map prediction.

How A Cairo-Based Startup Leverages Messenger To Reach The Forefront Of Artificial Intelligence

30 July 2017
Elizabeth MacBride

Cairo cab drivers are not aggressive, but they are crazy. When I go to that great city, I hold on to the side of the taxicabs and pray.

The fact that I didn’t have to ride in the typical Cairo taxis was one reason my visit there last December was a pleasure. I went to the RiseUp Summit, which is a gathering of entrepreneurs from across the world at the GrEEK Campus. On call instead of the cabs: a company called London Cabs, which had clean and comfortable cars.

Cairo-based Elves, a personal concierge app, had arranged the cabs. The company, one of many in the crowded personal concierge space, has already come a long way since December. Founded by an Egyptian couple, Karim Elsahy and his wife, Abeer Elsisi, Elves has become a featured app on Messenger. Facebook generates about 30,000 hits a month for 40-employee Elves, which allows people to ask human agents for anything from travel, to hotel bookings to help find my luggage, or schedule a meeting for me. (By far most of the requests are related to travel). The human agents rely on bots to search for information and perform transactions.

Elves is interesting for three reasons. It’s a sign of how fast the Egyptian ecosystem is evolving; it offers a window into how Facebook’s Messenger is evolving as a platform for third-party software, and it offers a (somewhat disturbing) window into the way artificial intelligence is evolving.
