GOOD MORNING LOVELY

Japanese researchers use wood to make cellulose nanofiber auto parts stronger and lighter than metal

by Naomi Tajitsu and Maki Shiraki
15 August 2017

KYOTO – The global push among carmakers to make ever lighter vehicles is leading some auto suppliers in Japan to turn to what seems like an unlikely substitute for steel — wood.

Japanese researchers and auto component makers say a material made from wood pulp weighs just one fifth the weight of steel, and can be five times stronger.

The material — known as cellulose nanofiber — could become a viable alternative to steel in the decades ahead, they say, although it faces competition from carbon-based materials and remains a long way from being commercially viable.

Reducing the weight of a vehicle will be critical as manufacturers move to bring electric cars into the mainstream. Batteries are an expensive but vital component, and a reduction in car weight means fewer batteries are needed to power the vehicle and running costs can be reduced.

“Lightweighting is a constant issue for us,” said Masanori Matsushiro, a project manager overseeing body design at Toyota Motor Corp.

“But we also have to resolve the issue of high manufacturing costs before we see an increased use of new, lighter-weight materials in mass-volume cars.”

Together with major parts suppliers such as Denso Corp. (Toyota’s biggest supplier) and Daikyo-Nishikawa Corp., researchers at Kyoto University are working on plastics with incorporated cellulose nanofibers — which are made by breaking down wood pulp fibers into fragments several hundredths of a micron (one-thousandth of a millimeter) in size.

Cellulose nanofibers have been used in a variety of products, ranging from ink to transparent displays, but their potential use in cars has been enabled by the “Kyoto process,” under which chemically treated wood fibers are kneaded into plastics while they are simultaneously being broken down into the nanofibers. The method slashes the cost of production to roughly one-fifth that of other processes.

“This is the lowest-cost, highest-performance application for cellulose nanofibers, and that’s why we’re focusing on its use in auto and aircraft parts,” said Kyoto University professor Hiroaki Yano, who is leading the research, during an interview.

The university is also currently working with auto parts suppliers to develop a prototype car using cellulose nanofiber-based parts, set to be completed in 2020.

“We’ve been using plastics as a replacement for steel, and we’re hoping that cellulose nanofibers will widen the possibilities toward that goal,” said Yukihiko Ishino, a spokesman at Daikyo-Nishikawa, which counts Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. among its customers.

Automakers are also using other lightweight substitutes. BMW uses carbon fiber reinforced polymers for its i3 compact electric car and for its 7 series, while high-tensile steel and aluminium alloys are currently the most widely used lightweight options because they are cheaper and recyclable.

Yano said he was inspired in his research by a photo of the “Spruce Goose,” a cargo plane made almost entirely of wood in 1947 by U.S. billionaire entrepreneur Howard Hughes. At the time, it was the world’s largest aircraft.

“I thought that if Howard Hughes could find a way to use wood to build a massive plane, why not use wood to make a material that was as strong as steel,” he said.

The cost of mass producing 1 kg of cellulose nanofiber is currently around ¥1,000.

Yano aims to halve that cost by 2030, which he says will make it an economically viable product since it will be combined with plastic. That will make it competitive against high tensile steel and aluminium alloys, which currently cost around $2 per (about ¥220) per 1 kg.

Industry experts anticipate that carbon fiber prices will fall to around $10 per kg by 2025.

Analysts still say high-tensile steel and aluminium will be the more popular alternative for many years to come, mindful that parts makers would need to overhaul production lines and figure out ways to fasten new materials like cellulose nanofiber onto other car parts.

Anthony Vicari, an applied materials analyst at Lux Research in Boston, said it “would be a big deal” if Yano’s projections prove to be correct.

For now, he said, it remains “a very big ‘if.’ “

Drone tech offers new ways to manage climate change

Date: August 10, 2017
Source: Cornell University

An innovation providing key clues to how humans might manage forests and cities to cool the planet is taking flight. Cornell researchers are using drone technology to more accurately measure surface reflectivity on the landscape, a technological advance that could offer a new way to manage climate change.

"When making predictions about climate change, it's critical that scientists understand how much energy Earth is absorbing and retaining," said Charlotte Levy, a doctoral candidate who presented a talk on her research at the annual Ecological Society of America meeting, in Portland, Oregon, Aug. 8.

When a surface reflects solar energy rather than absorbing it as heat, the result is major cooling, locally and globally. The scientific term for the measurement of surface reflectivity is albedo. "Albedo is important to understand because it's one of the main controls for Earth's overall energy budget," said Levy, whose research project is directed by Timothy Fahey, professor of natural resources. She is advised by Christine Goodale, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.

Using drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, Levy and others have developed a novel method of measuring albedo with more flexibility and accuracy than was possible before.

Climate scientists have long been able to get albedo measurements throughout the United States via satellites and sensors placed on research towers. However, there are relatively few of these, and they cannot be moved to compare the albedo of nearby locations. "The drones allow for measurements to be taken wherever they are needed," Levy said. "We can send one to hover above a forest and then have it fly across the road where the same forest was thinned five years earlier, and we can measure precisely what the difference is."

Past attempts by scientists to use drones to study albedo have failed because the sensors required to make the measurements are heavy and throw off the drones' balance.

Levy and her team halved both the weight and the engineering challenge by placing only the downward-facing sensor on the drone. The upward-facing sensor is placed in a nearby field.

Currently, they are validating the method, demonstrating that the drones' measurements compare favorably to those taken by satellite and tower.

"This is a big finding from a climate change perspective because we see a lot of potential applications," said Levy.

Now the researchers can look specifically at how management techniques affect forests' overall albedo, and can adjust forest planning to account for factors that influence climate change.

For years, climate researchers have known that planting forests results in a net positive effect on climate change. In certain conditions, however, such as locations blanketed with reflective snow cover for long portions of the year, planting trees can actually have a warming effect. As these cold-region trees grow, they create a dark surface that absorbs energy and, because they grow slowly, do not sequester as much carbon as trees in warmer regions that grow faster.

Levy focuses much of her research on determining where to plant forests in temperate regions with seasonal snow cover for maximum positive impact on the climate. She studies intricate problems like how thinning a forest compares to planting a particular mix of species.

Albedo measurements for any land surface are also vital to global climate models that scientists use as a basis for all of their climate predictions. The more accurate and numerous these are, the better those predictions will be. Architects and scientists interested in looking at the albedo of different building styles, which can be important for reducing the urban heat island effect, could benefit from the drone technology as well.

"What we did is very simple," Levy said. "But it really changed how you can take these measurements, and we expect that to have a major impact on the way scientists think about global climate change."

GOOD MORNING FELLOW UFOCASEBOOKERS grin

Russia Beyond The Headlines

Spaced-out in the Soviet Union: 3 UFO stories from Russia

August 16, 2017 Oleg Yegorov

People see - or think they see - UFOs all around the world, and naturally Russia has its fair share of unexplained events. Although there’s no solid proof of contact with extraterrestrials, dozens of people in the country and the former USSR are sure aliens exist.

All around the world people tend to believe that their own country’s special services have much to hide, including information about extraterrestrial civilizations. Russia is no different, nor was the USSR, where many people discussed the omnipotent KGB holding back data concerning alien secrets.

In 2005 Vladimir Kryuchkov, the last head of the KGB, denounced the rumors - firmly stating this in an interview: “There was no single case of receiving material confirming any UFO’s existence.”

According to Kryuchkov, the KGB scrutinized all events in the USSR thought to be connected to abnormal activity. Sadly, the largest country on Earth was found to be short on proven supernatural happenings, including flying saucers and bug-eyed, grey aliens.

However, the former KGB chief’s words did not sway the minds of Russians who were - and are - set on believing the contrary. People continue to discuss encounters with UFOs and space travelers on sites like ufology.ru. While chatting online they tend to agree on one thing: Civilisations on other planets exist and some have visited Earth.

The Petrozavodsk phenomenon

In both Russia and the USSR, most cases of UFO sightings were connected with military experiments mistaken for objects from space. However, there are some instances that can’t be dismissed so easily. Perhaps the most mysterious case occurred in 1977 in Petrozavodsk (696 km northwest of Moscow).

One September night, about 200 people from the Republic of Karelia saw a strange object in the night sky, surrounded by glowing white light. It looked like a cloud emitting bright rays and moved from east to west. There were also reports of similar sightings in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Helsinki, and other cities in the Leningrad Oblast and Finland (all these territories are situated close to each other).

The case later became known as “The Petrozavodsk phenomenon” and was initially attributed to a satellite launch from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome (788 km east of Moscow) that took place the same night. However, Lev Gindilis - a scientist who collected information and statements about the incident for the Soviet Academy of Science - concluded that it was not a satellite, given the direction of its movement, size, and speed. “It’s unfeasible to satisfactorily understand the observed phenomenon,” he wrote in his report. Almost 50 years after, his words are still true.

Stranger things in Voronezh and the Far East

In 1989, while the USSR was on the brink of collapse, an incredibly unusual incident was reported in Voronezh (466 km south of Moscow). A group of children claimed they saw not only a disc-shaped spaceship land in the park they were playing, but also a three-eyed alien who emerged from it. According to the youths, the alien was holding “a 50 cm-long pistol tube” and even attacked one of them before leaving.

Though the children were the only ones who apparently witnessed the alien, some adults confirmed they had seen the UFO that day so the case attracted great media attention. Nevertheless, since no alien traces were found (except for the relatively high level of radiation in the area of the reported contact) the hype soon dispelled.

The small city of Dalnegorsk in the Far East (6491 km east of Moscow) also received its 15 minutes of fame in January 1986 after a spherical object darted across the sky. It crashed into a hill where local ufologists later found samples of metals which, though not necessarily unearthly, were not typical for the soil in the area. Officials from the military base situated nearby denied they had anything to do with the incident, so the ufologists assumed that Dalnegorsk had witnessed the crash of an extraterrestrial spaceship or satellite. Still, scientists neither confirm nor deny this suggestion.

The UFO sighting account happened in the town of Waterloo, Ala., in Lauderdale County in late fall of 1930

https://www.syracusenewtimes.com/ufo-1930-an-alabama-family-account/

In 1930 the construction activity of the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide electrical power to rural areas made Lauderdale County and small towns like Waterloo grow substantially. The population of Waterloo in the 1930s was about 497; it peaked during WWII to about 524 and presently is only around 200.

Jesse, a present day adult grandchild of his ancestral observer, tells us that his now-deceased grandmother was a teenager in 1930.

“It was after dark, perhaps about 6:30 p.m., and my grandmother and three other school mates were waiting in a car before an evening play or musical type performance at her school,” Jesse said. “They were a bit early, so they waited for someone to come unlock the school’s door.”

It’s important to understand that at that time in rural Alabama there was no such thing as street lights in remote areas where schools were located.

“Shortly after pulling up by the school, the occupants of the car saw a bright light that looked like a ball of fire,” Jesse said. “My grandmother was in the back driver’s side of the car, and she said that the light was approaching the car from the rear passenger’s side. They all assumed it was a flash light or car headlight of someone to come open up the door to the school. The light got brighter and it filled the car interior with light. It was so bright, my grandmother said it was as bright as daylight.”

Over the years the woman shared her consistent description with her children and grandchildren. “It was a bright glowing ball about the size of a basketball. It floated by our car, about two or three feet away,” Jesse said she recounted. “It moved forward on the rear passenger side about four feet above the ground. It moved at the speed of a slow walk and was completely silent.”

Jesse said his grandmother and her friend were so terrified that neither of them would get out of the car. But, as the story goes, she related that the two boys in the car got out and followed the glowing ball of fire as it meandered into the woods. The boys came back after a few minutes and said it had disappeared.

EDIT TO ADD:

In early December of 1999, the Center of UFO Studies received a letter from the daughter of the Reverend Turner Hamilton Holt:

"Today I want to share some knowledge that has been, by request, kept secret in our family since sometime in World War II. This concerns something my father was shown by his cousin Cordell Hull, the Secretary of State under Franklin Roosevelt.

http://www.ufocasebook.com/hull.html

"Snip, my father, who was young, brilliant, and sound of mind, told us this story because he didn't want the information to be lost.

One day when my father was in D.C,. Cordell swore him to secrecy and took him to a sub-basement in the U.S. Capitol building, and showed him an amazing sight:

(1) Four large glass jars holding 4 creatures unknown to my father or Cordell [and],

(2) A wrecked round craft of some kind nearby.

"My father wanted my sister and I to make this information known long after he and Cordell were dead, because he felt it was a very important bit of information.

We have researched your group {MUFON} and feel it is the most reliable group in the country. We hope that you will research and search this information.

The jars with creatures in formaldehyde and the wrecked craft are somewhere! "Cordell said they were afraid they would start a panic if the public found out about it."

Sincerely, Lucile Andrew, Ashland, Ohio.

Cordell Hull was one of the greatest statesmen of the 20th Century with absolutely no apparent reason to tell this story unless it was true, especially at a time when stories of flying saucers and their alien drivers had not yet become part of our culture.

Direction & Altitude of the Sun and Planets during the Eclipse

http://www.nakedeyeplanets.com/usa-eclipse-2017.htm

The table below shows that, in a few states, pairs of planets have the same altitude in the sky at totality (i.e. they appear level with each other, in relation to the horizon). In central Nebraska, Venus and Mars appear almost level with each other, differing in altitude by 1° and being 26° apart horizontally. In central Missouri, Venus and Mercury appear level, having the same altitude and being 43° apart. In central South Carolina, Venus and Jupiter appear level, being 85° apart (almost one-quarter of the angular distance around the horizon). Finally, in central and Eastern South Carolina Mars and Mercury appear almost level (within 1° in altitude of each other), being separated horizontally by an angular distance of 18°.
