Commuters Horrified on Londen Rails
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/oct/02/doomsday-preacher-wimbledon-train-station-passengers-flee
User Image
Hundreds of thousands of commuters experienced major disruption during rush hour on Monday morning after passengers evacuated themselves from a train in London and spilled on to the track because they feared a fellow passenger was acting erratically.

The incident, which took place at about 8.30am just outside Wimbledon station on a South Western Railway train running from Shepperton to Waterloo, forced Network Rail to switch off power in the area, causing long delays.

Ian O’Sullivan, 42, who was in the same carriage as the passenger, said a man with a rucksack began reading what appeared to be extracts from the Old Testament, when the train stopped at a red light outside the south-west London rail station.

“He was quite well spoken and calm,” he said. “He said: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to talk to you about something and that something is the word of the Lord, Jesus Christ. He’s here to heal your sins. The Bible tells you that homosexuality is a sin and sex before marriage is a sin. You need to repent’.”

Other passengers said the man referred to “doomsday” and the afterlife.

O’Sullivan, a marketing consultant, said he did not find the man threatening, but people started pushing and shoving, with another passenger warning the man that he was scaring people.

“It suddenly became a Chinese whisper and [there was] panic,” he said. “It was quite a full train, but the area around him was suddenly quite empty.”

Some people prised open the doors and went on to the tracks.

O’Sullivan said the train’s guard came over the public address system asking people what they were doing on the tracks and warning them that they could die if they touched a rail.

“We could hear a woman [outside] saying there’s a man and he’s going to kill everybody,” he said. “But everybody in the carriage said he never said that.”

He said the guard came to the carriage, spoke to the now “sheepish” man and searched his bag, but found only a water flask and books.

“The guard did a brilliant job of trying to keep things under control,” O’Sullivan said. “He established pretty quickly that there wasn’t a threat.”

When the train eventually got to Wimbledon station, British Transport Police officers questioned the man, but he was not arrested. O’Sullivan said a number of passengers offered to vouch for the man, insisting that he had not threatened anyone.

A Network Rail spokesman said the incident caused significant delays. “Passengers self-evacuated off a train and on to the tracks at Wimbledon this morning after a passenger incident. British Transport Police are investigating and there were no injuries to passengers or staff,” he said.

The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, which is balloting South Western Railway members on whether to strike in a dispute over guards on trains, also praised the guard’s response.

The union’s general secretary, Mick Cash, said: “Panic could have broken out but for the guard’s calm and measured response. This was a packed passenger train at the height of the rush hour. It illustrates just why RMT members are fighting so hard to keep the guard on South Western Railway services.”

The incident was compounded by a points failure outside Waterloo, which caused platforms seven to 11 to be shut temporarily.

South Western Railway also reported delays due to overrunning engineering work between Castle Cary and Yeovil Junction.

Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink services were also delayed because of overrunning engineering work.

Did A Steel Plate Beat Sputnik Into Space?

Was the first man-made object propelled into space actually a 1 ton armor plate? On August 27th, 1957 — just two months prior to Sputnik 1 — an underground nuclear test was conducted in southern Nevada.
During the explosion, a steel plate cap was blasted off of a test shaft. The plate could be seen in the initial high-speed video frames, and it was estimated to have reached a speed six times the sufficient escape velocity to depart Earth. To this day, no one knows if this strange artifact of early Space Age folklore still roams the void of space, or simply vaporized due to atmospheric compression at “launch”.

Details:

During the Pascal-B nuclear test, a 900-kilogram (2,000 lb) steel plate cap (a piece of armor plate) was blasted off the top of a test shaft at a speed of more than 66 kilometres per second (41 mi/s).

Before the test, experimental designer Dr. Brownlee had performed a highly approximate calculation that suggested that the nuclear explosion, combined with the specific design of the shaft, would accelerate the plate to six times escape velocity The plate was never found, but Dr. Brownlee believes that the plate never left the atmosphere, as it may even have been vaporized by compression heating of the atmosphere due to its high speed.

User Image

The calculated velocity was sufficiently interesting that the crew trained a high-speed camera on the plate, which unfortunately only appeared in one frame, but this nevertheless gave a very high lower bound for the speed.

After the event, Dr. Robert R. Brownlee described the best estimate of the cover’s speed from the photographic evidence as “going like a bat out of hell!” The use of a subterranean shaft and nuclear device to propel an object to escape velocity has since been termed a “thunder well”.

This incident was reputedly used as part of the technical justification for the Orion project for possible use of nuclear blasts for outer-space propulsion.

1943 — The Navy Floatplane and The Invisible UFO

By Cheryl Costa 
Posted on October 2, 2017

This World War II UFO encounter story involves a United States Maritime cargo vessel, a Navy Cruiser and a Navy floatplane that hit an invisible UFO.

In 2004, a man named Frank in his mid-80s described himself as a World War II veteran. He tells us that during the war he was a U.S. Army infantry officer.

Frank explained that he was onboard the MS Sea Witch, a pre-war U.S. maritime cargo vessel that was anchored in the Fiji Islands. An accompanying navy vessel, a heavy cruiser, the USS Chicago CA-29, was among the ships in the anchorage.

The Chicago was equipped with four Curtiss SOC Seagull scout-observation floatplanes. Several times a day, the Chicago would launch one of its observation aircrafts to perform surveillance of the surrounding area. On the morning in question, Jan. 18, 1943, one of the observation floatplanes was lifted off the heavy cruiser and launched on its reconnaissance sortie.

About an hour later Frank and about 25 witnesses on the Sea Witch were watching the observation floatplane as it returned from its morning surveillance mission. The floatplane had descended to about 600 feet preparing to make its water landing. He said all the observers were stunned as the aircraft appeared to fly into an invisible object.

“That plane simply stopped flying for an instant and fell vertically into the ocean as a ball of tangled metal,” Frank said.

Frank explained it was obvious to everyone who witnessed the event that the pilot and observer were killed in the collision. The USS Chicago mounted no recovery effort. To this day, he remembers this odd event like it was yesterday and has wondered what it was that floatplane hit.

After the war, the MS Sea Witch was sold many times to numerous foreign owners until it was eventually scrapped in Sweden.

The USS Chicago met with a more dramatic fate just a few weeks later. On Jan. 27, 1943, she sailed from Nouméa to escort a Guadalcanal convoy. On the night of Jan. 29, the convoy came under attack by Japanese aircrafts during the Battle of Rennell Island.

Various fires caused the attack upon the convoy. This gave the Japanese torpedo bombers the light they needed to target and drop torpedoes toward the heavy cruiser. Two torpedoes hit the Chicago and caused severe flooding and loss of power. Despite valiant damage control efforts by Chicago’s experienced crew, the ship was lost. The Chicago had a complement of 1,130 officers and men and miraculously only 61 perished during the attack.

Interestingly, the loss of Chicago wasn’t reported to the general public for some time. It’s been said that Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander in chief of Allied Pacific forces, threatened to “shoot” any of his staff who leaked the ship’s loss to the press. Details of the horrendous battle started to emerge in U.S. newspapers in the middle of February 1943.

This weird UFO was filmed in Italy in September 2017. This is the description translated from Italian:
Mysterious globes moving back and forth or from right to left. It all lasted for a couple of minutes, maybe even less. Just the time though to allow the video but they do not show the nature of those bright spheres. Tall in the sky, this is safe. It's hard to believe that they could be electric torches, perhaps lit up some slopes. Although it is not a presumption to be discarded a priori.
It's hard to believe they could be airplane lights. It is in fact that they disappeared suddenly, as they appeared. Initially, three globes, then two, and finally one light that aroused some perplexity and above all fueled the mystery of the mysterious lights that this summer has invested all over the world.

NUMBERS

Well, kids' book or not, I still don't comprehend it. All I know is, there are a lot of stars.... Wait! Then that means the number of PLANETS might be....... Rats! Now I've gotta start over! 1, 2, 3, 4,.....

Number of raindrops in a rain storm? Obviously the author has never been to Florida!

New Kids' Book Puts the Mind-Bogglingly Numbers of the Universe into Perspective

"A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars" (Greenwillow Books, 2017) by Seth Fishman and illustrated by Isabel Greenberg. Credit: Greenwillow Books

Carl Sagan was only partly right. For while it's true that we're made of star stuff, it would perhaps be more accurate to say that the universe is composed of numbers. And not just any numbers, mind you, but enormous numbers. Gigantic, mind-bogglingly tremendous whoppers of numbers. Numbers that the human mind can scarcely comprehend.

In "A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars" (Greenwillow Books, 2017), a new picture book illustrated by Isabel Greenberg released today (Oct. 3), author Seth Fishman lobs the reader the biggest number of all: the quantity of stars in the night sky. That would be — maybe, possibly, probably — 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, including the sun Earth orbits, according to Fishman.

The tricky thing about statistics, however, is that they rarely stay put. From one moment to the next, populations grow and shrink, empires rise and fall, and even stars wink in and out of existence.
Such was the challenge Fishman faced while he compiled his list of scale-busting numbers, from the number of trees pumping out the oxygen we breathe (3,000,000,000,000) to the weight of the Earth itself (13,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 lbs.).

"It's a fear of mine that I'll go into a reading and someone will say, 'These numbers are all wrong,'" Fishman told Space.com. "These numbers are all accurate to the very best of my abilities. I know that over time, some things will change."

And accuracy isn't the point, Fishman said. As he notes in the afterward of the book, there's a reason why he didn't title the book "One Hundred Nineteen Sextillion Fifty-Seven Quintillion Seven Hundred Thirty-Seven Quadrillion One Hundred Eighty-Three Trillion Four Hundred Sixty-Two Billion Three Hundred Seven Million Four Hundred Ninety-One Thousand Six Hundred Nine Stars."

To quote an example, we may never know the exact number of ants crawling across the planet's surface, but we can extrapolate — which is to say, guess, but in a scientific way — how many there are based on per-acre counts. (It's somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000,000,000,000,000, if you're keeping score.)

Watch video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=18&v=JlDNzAMUnqg

Again, the precise total isn't what matters. What does matter is getting a handle on just how large these numbers are, and how they compare to the other numbers that permeate everything around us.

"I think what we're trying to do is make these large numbers accessible to kids," Fishman said.

To do so, Fishman doesn't just rattle off unfathomable figures like the number of seconds in a year (31,536,000), the distance between the Earth and the moon (240,000 miles), or how many people go shoulder to shoulder every day on our big blue marble (7,500,000,000), but he frames them in a way that provides perspective.

Who knew, for instance, that those 7,500,000,000 humans weigh about the same as the aforementioned 10,000,000,000,000,000 ants? Or that it'd take 420,000,000 kids (or "dogs or smallish snakes or baseball bats") lined up head to foot to encircle the globe? Or that — fun fact! — we might eat up to 70 lbs. of bugs, ants included, in our lifetimes?

"A child isn't necessarily going to get the number of raindrops in a thunderstorm (1,620, 000,000,000,000)," Fishman said, "but maybe it'll help them connect with what the word 'trillion' means because they know what a thunderstorm looks like."

In case these infinitesimal statistics begin to stir up feelings of existential panic among the 4-to-8 set, which is the book's intended age range, Fishman ends on a comforting, reality-tethering note, one that was inspired by his young son: "There's only one of you. Right here, right now, reading this book."

Wrapping up "right there, with the reader" was Fishman's plan from the beginning.

"I want [my son] to know that he's an important part of this universe, because I think every kid is, every thing is," Fishman said. "We're all grappling with what it means to be an individual. It was really important to make this not just a book about cool, big numbers, but an invitation to find your spot in that world."

Because somewhere among those hundred billion trillion stars, there you are.

Just my armchair opinion here Crystal.

I've seen a few interviews of someone saying they are experts on firearms and for the most part they probably couldn't load a magazine without help !

That supposed 'Operator' Crystal mentioned was blowing smoke!

I have used the 'bump fire' and I know where the term comes from and how this particular item was invented.
We have two in the shop. We have sold a few others in the past. They work but take practice to use correctly. Mostly they are just too expensive for the average person to use due to the cost of ammo to feed it ! This guy had plenty of cash so practice was not a problem. Specially in the Vegas area!

There where NO belt feds in the room. Every weapon they found was legal. I believe they are going to find out that the guns jammed as the reason he stopped shooting. The magazines they showed are known to be unreliable just because they are 'high capacity' ! Unfortunately they worked for a little too long !

The two shooters idea doesn't work. The people some witness's saw leave with weapons where Mandalay personnel and hotel guests!

Both blown out windows were to the same sweet in the Mandalay. Even in Vegas what's going on in the next room isn't that hard to figure out ! Specially when it's rather loud smashing of windows with a sledge hammer and gunfire!
Two cops and a Security guard where at the room in 17-20 seconds from reports of the jerks neighbors.
I believe the reason besides the firearm jamming is that he didn't believe the cops would get there and locate him as fast as they did!
The cops were there too quickly and no one left the room that they saw or reported so one shooter!

This guy planned this very carefully. Read a lot if books about sniping because he used every trick in the book to set this up!

It was one crazed guy with a terrible plan. No great conspiracy folks are trying to make it out to be.

Good morning Lone,

I have no expertise whatsoever with weapons. (Shooting beer cans doesn't count) I'm not afraid of them, I'm afraid of me around them because I'm not trained. I appreciate your opinion when I read things like this. All I know is NEVER point a weapon at a person.
