What We've Learned From 60 Years of U.S.-Funded UFO Probes

The newly revealed Pentagon program is certainly not the first federally funded project to hunt for signs of advanced intelligence in the galaxy.

By Nadia Drake
PUBLISHED December 19, 2017

A recently revealed, formerly secret U.S. government program that studied unexplained aerial phenomena—more colloquially referred to as UFOs—came as a surprise to many when stories describing it appeared almost simultaneously in the New York Times and Politico.

The Pentagon’s project, called the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, was reportedly established in 2007 to investigate unexplained aerial phenomena that appeared to be using novel propulsive, hovering, or otherwise advanced technologies. A 490-page report detailing the program’s findings supposedly exists, though it has not yet been released.

Some may think that the very existence of this project supports the idea that aliens are visiting us, but that’s not a logical conclusion. The undeniable truth is that observations of a puzzling nature certainly merit investigation, as long as it’s done scientifically. And this project is not even close to the first U.S. government-funded search for evidence of advanced intelligence—so far, to little effect.

Projects that began more than five decades ago and still continue to this day include efforts to evaluate bizarre sightings and exotic objects, scan the skies for signs of intelligent transmissions, and develop instruments capable of sniffing out signs of life on faraway worlds.

The fact that the government chose to spend some cash on a supposedly scientific look at UFOs—particularly as they could be crucially related to national security threats—really should be no surprise, says Seth Shostak, one of the SETI Institute’s senior alien hunters.

“The feds have long had an interest in UFOs, going back to the celebrity cases of the late 1940s—Roswell, anyone?” says Shostak. “Much of the motivation for this interest was the worry that the strange things being reported in the sky might be novel Soviet—or today, Russian or Chinese—aircraft.

“But even if you think that the interest had greater scope, that the government really wanted to know if our little planet was being visited by other beings, there’s little surprise in the fact that they’ve spent a modest amount of money investigating that possibility.” Indeed, roughly a third of the U.S. population believes that some of these bizarre phenomena are attributable to extraterrestrial visitors, he says.

The bigger problem, according to Shostak, is that the money shunted into the Pentagon program went primarily to a company founded by Robert Bigelow, a billionaire aerospace mogul whose company builds inflatable space modules and who has long believed in alien visitation. Initiated after conversations between Bigelow and then-Nevada senator Harry Reid, the program garnered at least $22 million in funding over five years (it’s not yet clear whether it survives under a different guise after its supposed termination in 2012).

Within the new stories are nuggets of curious information, including the supposed keeping of unearthly alloys at Bigelow’s facilities, and a video that reportedly shows an object spotted by two U.S. Navy pilots.

But the most that’s publicly known about the program’s findings is second-hand at best, coming from insiders relaying their impressions to reporters. Some, like Reid, claim there is compelling evidence that merits further investigation—but the details remain as elusive as the aliens.

“Objective description of any phenomena should be backed up by compelling evidence, and despite many decades of reports of various UFO and abduction phenomena, we don’t have such evidence,” says Andrew Siemion, director of the Berkeley SETI research center. “Moreover, astronomers spend their lives looking at the sky with a wide variety of telescopes and techniques, and we have never snapped a picture of [an unexplained] spaceship.”

Here are some of our previous and ongoing attempts to find out if, in fact, aliens are out there and whether we have been visited, starting with the heyday of such activities around the middle of the last century.

1947: Roswell (Project Mogul)

Easily the granddaddy of all UFO conspiracies, the Roswell incident is described by many as the catastrophic crash of an alien spaceship in the New Mexico desert, after which the U.S. government supposedly retrieved the spacecraft (and several aliens). In 1994, the Air Force released a report identifying the debris as belonging to “a once top-secret balloon operation, Project MOGUL, designed to monitor the atmosphere for evidence of Soviet nuclear tests.”

1948-1952: Projects Sign and Grudge

First Sign and then Grudge, these Air Force-funded projects were examinations of flying saucers and other reported unexplained phenomena, inspired both by the Cold War and a 1947 observation of nine “disk-shaped objects” over Washington state. According to the CIA, “GRUDGE officials found no evidence in UFO sightings of advanced foreign weapons design or development, and they concluded that UFOs did not threaten U.S. security. They recommended that the project be reduced in scope because the very existence of Air Force official interest encouraged people to believe in UFOs and contributed to a ’war hysteria’ atmosphere.”

1952-1969: Project Blue Book

A continuation of the previous two projects, Blue Book was the longest and most extensive known investigation of unexplained aerial happenings. Of the 12,618 reported sightings it investigated, most were ruled to be misidentified natural phenomena or aircraft (including early U-2 spy planes on test flights); 701 and remained unidentified. The report concluded that “No UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force has ever given any indication of threat to our national security; there has been no evidence submitted to or discovered by the Air Force that sightings categorized as ’unidentified’ represent technological developments or principles beyond the range of present-day scientific knowledge; there has been no evidence indicating the sightings categorized as ’unidentified’ are extraterrestrial vehicles.”

1960: Project Ozma

Funded by the National Science Foundation, a federal agency created in 1950, this $2,000 project was the first scientific search for signs of intelligent radio transmissions from other worlds. Using a telescope at the Green Bank Observatory, astronomer Frank Drake (yes, the reporter’s father) listened for radio transmissions coming from planets that could be orbiting the stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani, but the scans came up empty.

1966-1968: University of Colorado UFO Project/Condon Committee

Funded by the Air Force, this project produced 1968’s Condon Report, which concluded that there was no compelling evidence for extraterrestrial involvement in UFOs, and which recommended discontinuing Project Blue Book and any further investigations of UFOs. The report inspired the American Association of the Advancement for Science to convene a meeting on the topic, which Carl Sagan and Thornton Page then turned into a book called UFOs: A Scientific Debate.

1970s and ‘80s: CIA Investigations of Paranormal and Psychic Phenomena

The 1970s and 1980s saw the CIA investigating a bunch of phenomena associated with UFO sightings, such as parapsychology and psychic happenings. According to CIA report “Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90 (A Die-Hard Issue)”, “CIA officials also looked at the UFO problem to determine what UFO sightings might tell them about Soviet progress in rockets and missiles and reviewed its counterintelligence aspects.”

1976-1993: SETI/HRMS

The only time the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, has been written into a NASA budget line, this decade provided as much as $12 million a year for searches using the Arecibo and Goldstone antennas. Around 1990, the government’s SETI program—headquartered at NASA’s Ames Research Center—was renamed the High Resolution Microwave Survey in an attempt to avoid cancellation. Nevada senator Richard Bryan ended up cancelling the program anyway in 1993, right after actual observations had started.

1990s to now: NASA’s Astrobiology Institute

Founded in 1998, the NASA Astrobiology Institute is one of many projects within the space agency aimed at investigating the possibility that life exists elsewhere in the cosmos. Scientists under its umbrella are currently thinking about whether life once existed on Mars, if there might be organisms tucked beneath the icy shells of the moons Europa and Enceladus, and how we would even recognize what life beyond Earth looks like if and when we see it.

Now, and beyond

Ongoing work that continues to rely on federal funds include SETI searches conducted between 1970 and the present using money from national science agencies; funds for developing instruments capable of detecting alien biospheres; and work done using organisms and environments on Earth as extraterrestrial analogs.

The Local Sweden

This gingerbread UFO is taking Sweden by storm
20 December 2017

Two brothers in northern Sweden have wowed Swedish media with their magnificently detailed and original gingerbread houses.

Sverker Högbom, 37 and André Högbom, 33 from Östersund have been quietly creating gingerbread houses that exceed all expectations. These are no ordinary Hansel and Gretel cottages but beautifully executed and highly imaginative creations featuring cars, animals and UFOs.

This year they even built gingerbread cottage that appears to be suspended in the air by a gingerbread flying saucer.

The two brothers have been refining their gingerbread skills since childhood. "We were little. I was 4 years old," Sverker told TheLocal. "It's just a bit of fun really."

They haven't entered any competitions so far because they like to create "without any rules" or themes. Both brothers grew up and live in Östersund where Sverker works as a civil engineer and André combines work as an illustrator with truck driving.

As they're both very busy with work they usually take "evenings here and there" to work on a gingerbread house:

"We work on a gingerbread house probably from November onward. Evenings here and there. Then we bake it in December".

Do they eat their creations? "No, we don't eat baked goods that have been on the counter for a month," Sverkar laughs. But he did admit to tasting the dough during baking.

The brothers aim to take a top quality photo of each year's creation, in a bid to preserve each house for posterity and hopefully inspire others. "Maybe someone might like to put a book together?" Sverker wonders.

4chan Users Find Evidence Atlanta Airport Blackout Was Part Of Intentional Cover-Up

https://squawker.org/analysis/atlantacu/

User Image

Late last night a sudden power outage shut down the world’s busiest airport. With the outage leading to both the FAA and Atlanta’s mayor ordering the suspension and grounding of all flights going both in an out of the airport while work was done to restore power. However the internet detectives over at 4chan have noticed one interesting piece of the story that no one in the mainstream press seems to want to mention. That right in the middle of this over 12 hour supposedly complete air traffic shut down, a single plane was mysteriously allowed to leave the airport. Which leaves us with an obvious question. Just what was so special about this lone permitted flight?

User Image

The plane in question 4X-ICB, is a cargo plane that arrived in Atlanta from Mexico City at 1:00 PM, just literal minutes before the alleged power problems began to make the airport go dark. The plane would then go on to leave for its next destination at 6:27 PM, right in the middle of the blackout that ran from about one to midnight. With the official record indicating that the first flight post blackout was not allowed to take off from the airport until 12:56 AM the next day, how then how do we account for our mystery flight?

WE POST ~ YOU OPINE grin

The Dumbing Down Of America: "The Numbers Speak Volumes"

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-12-18/dumbing-down-america-numbers-speak-volumes

According to the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 68% of public school children in the U.S. do not read proficiently by the time they finish third grade. And the U.S. News & World reported that barely 50% of students are ready for college-level reading when they graduate:

BackGround

The winter solstice — also known as Yule, Midwinter, the Shortest Day of the Year and the Longest Night — occurs at 11:28 a.m. ET Thursday.

But this short, little day with the great many names also may be the worst day of the year, according to astrologers. The reason? Saturn.

Apparently, the sun will appear to pass in front of the constellation Capricorn hours after Saturn does likewise. This will cause both of these orbs to line up for the first time time since 1664, according to London astrologer Neil Spencer, who writes for The (London) Observer but first wrote about the alignment on his blog.

He insists that starting something new on this day is “ill advised” and will have long-term consequences. And anything you try to do Thursday will be more difficult than usual, take more time and be more frustrating.

► Tuesday: Thursday's winter solstice marks the longest night of the year
► December 2016: Winter solstice: It only gets better from here
► December 2015: Monday's winter solstice marks the longest night

Perhaps that's why the president probably won't sign the tax bill Thursday — that and Congress has its paperwork to process — even though Spencer said the establishment, patriarchy, big business and property will be front and center in the cosmos.

Toss in all that holiday traffic — it is a gridlock alert day just about everywhere, according to Inrix, a company that analyzes transportation data — and it may be a good idea just to stay home.

“Saturn in Capricorn is a very useful placement, denoting one tough individual, but on a macro level, it doesn’t promise much in the way of fruitful change.”
Neil Spencer, astrologer

“Patience will not be a priority, especially if we are told that we ‘have to’ (do something) by our superiors," Lunar Living astrology website says. "We may be perceived as (in)subordinate. Be ready to deal with the repercussions of the rebellion.”

Astrologers Recommend staying home
Yet you can take solace in the winter solstice celebration at Newgrange in County Meath, Ireland, which is being streamed live to the world from 3:30 to 4:15 a.m. ET Thursday.

The entrance to the monument, which has a retaining wall made of quartz cobblestones, is aligned with the rising sun on the winter solstice. As the sun comes up between 8:30 and 9:15 a.m. in Ireland, sunlight pours in through an opening in the roof (called a “roofbox”) and floods the chamber with light.

News shows likely will carry some of the footage. After you watch it, you might want to get back under the covers.

UFO sightings: Four UNEXPLAINED alien mysteries that show ‘something not from Earth’

FOUR unsolved alien mysteries that show “something not from Earth” have been detailed following the emergence of the US’ Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP).

By Joseph Carey
PUBLISHED: 00:07, Thu, Dec 21, 2017

From 2008 to 2011, the US government spent £16.4million ($22million) in the program that was funded by former Senate majority leader Harry Reid and was lead by military intelligence official Luis Elizondo.

The Defence Department acknowledged the existence of the program following a recent investigation – they claim the initiative was shut down in 2012.

Mr Reid recently expressed his pride in the creation of the program that was used to investigate reports of UFOs.
He said: “I’m not embarrassed or ashamed or sorry I got this thing going.”

“I think it’s one of the good things I did in my congressional service. I’ve done something that no one has done before.”

The recent reveal delivered the revelation that video and audio of UFO incidents were obtained by the US.

One particular instance details footage from a Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet, a twin-engined fighter, showing an unidentified aircraft surrounded by a glowing aura.
The object travelled at a high speed and rotated as it moved - the pilots onboard are captured as saying “there’s a whole fleet of them”.

Business Insider

An alien hunter explains why extraterrestrial visitors are unlikely — despite the US government's UFO evidence

by Dave Mosher
20 December 2017

On Saturday, The New York Times and Politico independently published stories confirming that the US government had quietly funded a program to study UFOs for years.

The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, as it's called, "collected video and audio recordings of reported U.F.O. incidents." That footage includes one of an undated encounter with "an aircraft surrounded by some kind of glowing aura traveling at high speed and rotating as it moves," the Times wrote.

AATIP reportedly started in 2007 to study potential unknown military threats, and was funded by nearly $22 million of Department of Defense "black money".

DoD officials told The Times and Politico that it shut down the program in 2012. But Luis Elizondo, a military intelligence official who ran the research effort, allegedly continued its efforts afterward.

Elizondo resigned in October, reportedly in protest of secrecy surrounding the program. He now helps run Stars Academy of Arts and Science, a startup company that researches UFOs.

"These aircraft ... are displaying characteristics that are not currently within the US inventory, nor in any foreign inventory that we're aware of," Elizondo told CNN on Monday. "My personal belief is that there's very compelling evidence that we may nto be alone. Whatever that means."

But Seth Shostak, a senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, is not convinced — despite making a bet that we'll detect aliens within 20 years.

"If you see something in the air that you don't understand, and you're the guy in charge of the Air Force, you want to know what that is. It doesn't have much to do with aliens, necessarily," Shostak told Business Insider of AATIP's purpose. "But despite more than a half-century of this, the really good evidence that we're being visited still has failed to surface."

Saudis detain Palestinian-Jordanian billionaire to compel Abbas’ instant presence in Riyadh

https://www.debka.com/saudis-detain-palestinian-jordanian-billionaire-compel-abbas-instant-presence-riyadh/

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas was ordered to fly from Paris to Riyadh without delay after the Saudis detained Sabih al-Masri, 80, head of the Arab Bank.
The order to the Palestinian leader came on Saturday, Dec. 16, from the two richest Arab rulers, Saudi crown prince Muhammed bin Salman (MbS) and the UAE emir Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed (MbZ). They told him to interrupt his business engagements in Paris and present himself in the Saudi capital at once. DEBKAfile’s exclusive sources report that the two leaders intended to confront Abu Mazen with an ultimatum – the first ever presented to a Palestinian leader from an Arab quarter – to desist from his public blasts against President Donald Trump’s peace plans, and end his collaboration in this campaign with King Abdullah of Jordan and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.

User Image

To “persuade” the Palestinian leader that he means business, Prince Muhammad had the Palestinian-Jordanian billionaire Sabih al-Masri, who is also a Saudi citizen, detained when he was on his way to Riyadh airport to fly to Amman. Al-Masri ranks among the most prominent and affluent Palestinian-Jordanian business tycoons. He is the chairman of the Arab Bank, with majority holdings in the Palestinian territories and large investments in the Saudi kingdom. He dominates the Palestinian stock exchange based in Nablus, a town traditionally ruled by the Masri clan. With a prominent role in the Jordanian economy, Sabih Masri is very close to both Mahmoud Abbas and King Abdullah. Their interests are so intertwined that Al-Masry’s deputy on the board of the Arab Bank in Amman is Dr. Bassem Awadallah, former head of the Jordanian royal court, who carries the title of “King Abdullah’s Special Emissary to Saudi Arabia.”
Al Masry’s arrest was intended to punish both Abu Mazen and the Jordanian king. Earlier this week, MbS is reported to have warned them both not to attend the meeting for the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, called by the Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan to organize a broad campaign against President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel. The meeting was poorly attended.
