Well, Sys, we humans have filled the Earth with trash, so I guess it's not surprising that we're trashing up space around us......

Iran warns against 'illegal gatherings' after protests

https://www.afp.com/en/news/23/iran-warns-against-illegal-gatherings-after-protests-doc-vh7ua1

The Iranian government warned people against further protests on Saturday after two days of demonstrations sparked by anger over an array of economic problems.

"We urge all those who receive these calls to protest not to participate in these illegal gatherings as they will create problems for themselves and other citizens," said Interior Minister Abdolrahman Rahmani Fazli.

State news channel IRINN said it had been banned from covering the protests that spread from second city Mashhad on Thursday to hit several towns and cities.

The protests initially targeted economic problems, but quickly turned against the Islamic regime as a whole.

US President Donald Trump warned "the world is watching" after dozens of demonstrators were arrested.

Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi dismissed Trump's comments as "irrelevant" and "opportunistic".

Media coverage inside Iran focused almost exclusively on pro-regime rallies held on Saturday to mark the defeat of the last major protest movement in 2009, which hardliners call "the sedition".

The timing was coincidental, since the rallies are held every year on this day, but offered a handy show of strength to the regime as huge crowds of black-clad supporters gathered across the country.

"The enemy wants once again to create a new plot and use social media and economic issues to foment a new sedition," Ayatollah Mohsen Araki told a crowd in Tehran, according to the conservative Fars news agency.

Video footage on social media showed hundreds marching through the holy city of Qom on Friday evening, with people chanting "Death to the dictator" and "Free political prisoners".

Crypto Exchange CEO Released After Paying $1 Million Ransom In Bitcoin

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-12-29/bitcoin-exchange-ceo-released-after-paying-1-million-ransom

Just yesterday we warned that the lives of the world's new "Bitcoin Billionaires" had just become a bit more complicated after reports surfaced that one such crypto investor, Pavel Lerner, was kidnapped by a group of armed men wearing ski masks as he left his office in the Obolon district of Kiev earlier this week.

While it may have seemed that his fate was sealed at the moment of his kidnapping, the Financial Times has just confirmed the Lerner has been released after paying his kidnappers a $1 million ransom in Bitcoin.

User Image

As we noted yesterday, Pavel, a Russian citizen, has a number of startups in Ukraine linked to cryptocurrency mining and blockchain technology. In addition, he is also the CEO of EXMO, a UK-based Bitcoin exchange.

According to prior reports from The Telegraph, Lerner (40) was pulled into a black Mercedes Benz by a group of armed men wearing ski masks as he left his office on December 26. Adding to the intrigue of the abduction, EXMO's website suffered a DDOS attack yesterday morning, which knocked trading temporarily offline, just as news of the kidnapping begin to draw public attention.

Following the news of Lerner's disappearance, EXMO issued a statement requesting "any information regarding his whereabouts" and assuring customers that he could not be 'convinced' to give up their Bitcoin or personal data stored on the exchange.

User Image

Of course, Lerner is not the first Bitcoin extortion target for the world's new breed of crypto terrorists. Earlier this month we reported that, Nice Hash, the largest crypto-mining marketplace, was hacked with over 4,700 bitcoins, worth over $62 million, stolen...

Conclusion: If you've made a small fortune trading Bitcoin over the past couple of quarters it may be best to keep that information to yourself...

Scientists thought this snake vanished 100 years ago. Then they found one

Joshua Bowling, The Republic
Published 6:00 a.m. MT Dec. 31, 2017

The year was 2015 and, as biologist Michael Lester recalls, he was walking a familiar trail near the Colorado River looking for birds when he saw a long object on the ground and thought, "There wasn’t a stick there before."
He was right — and it wasn't a stick.

It was a northern Mexican garter snake, which was designated as a threatened species the year before and hadn't been seen along the Colorado River for the past 111 years.

Lester was working as a seasonal technician for a bird research group at Beal Lake on the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge.

"When I got back to our shared housing, I mentioned to my field crew leader, 'Oh yeah, I saw a garter snake today,' pretty nonchalantly," he recalled in an interview. "She had this look on her face, and she was like, 'What are you talking about? There are no garter snakes in this area.' "

Lester showed her a photo he took of it, and they sent it to the Arizona Game and Fish Department and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for verification.

They verified it, he recalled, and they knew they had made an unlikely discovery.

The Colorado River, heavily dammed and in demand, is far from the river it once was.
Its water runs through seven states and Mexico and serves more than 25 million people.

The acts of delivering water and generating power have worn on the watercourse and its accompanying habitats.

Some endangered and threatened species call the river home, and in 2005, the Lower Colorado River Multi-Species Conservation Program was officially launched to protect those species.

Although the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is the program's implementing agency, the program itself is made up of more than 50 governmental and non-governmental agencies that use the river's water.

To quote a movie character, "I HATE snakes!"

but I'm glad the little guys are alive after all.

Happy New Year Crystal and to everyone else!

Here in the southern U.S. states one must eat certain foods for it to be a good year.

One must eat black eyed peas, leafy vegetables ( example mustard greens ), yellow corn bread, and meat.

Meat means wealth, and cornbread means gold.

Black eyed peas means good luck, and leafy vegetables means paper money.

Lobster is a no-no because they move backwards.

Chicken is a no-no because they scratch backwards.

One must move only forward.

I love these dramatic narrated videos. I hope the baffled witnesses can get their lives back in order. Lesson to be learned is not to be looking up at the night sky on or about major holidays. You may not be able to handle what you see. grin

Mysterious Universe

Earliest Known Practical Joke Discovered in Croatia

Paul Seaburn
January 3, 2018

A Roman walks into a bar, holds up two fingers and says, “Five beers, please.”

The ancient Romans may not have been known for their joke-telling skills (think Roman number V), but it seems they more than made up for this with their ability to execute a proper practical joke. In fact, a new discovery in Croatia points to 4th century Romans as the first users of an innocent-looking wine bowl that spilled its contents on unsuspecting drinkers, although the idea for this gag actually goes back to one of the most famous Greek mathematicians in history.

Proving one can get paid to study just about anything, that statement came from a study co-authored by archaeologist Dr. Richard Hobbs, the Weston Curator of Roman Britain at the British Museum, and published in the Journal of Roman Archaeology. Hobbs writes that the bowl was found in Vinkovci, Croatia, in early 2012 and archeologists originally assumed it to be just another bowl or vessel for drinking wine. However, one unique aspect of this particular bowl inspired Hobbs to look for its true purpose.

As reported in the Daily Mail, that aspect was the shape attached to the bottom of the bowl. Hobbs recognized it as a representation of Tantalus, a Greek mythological figure (possibly based on a real person) who allegedly killed and ate his son and was sentenced to spend eternity in Tartarus (a deep abyss used for torturing the wicked) standing in a pool of water under a fruit tree with the fruit always just beyond his reach and the water receding when he went to drink it.

This horrible story apparently inspired someone to create the Tantalus bowl or cup (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-5220663/Roman-Tanatalus-bowl-practical-joke-device.html), which had a tube hidden inside the figure – a tube which led to a hole hidden on the bottom. When the liquid being poured into it reached a certain level, it was siphoned into the hole and the contents spilled onto the lap of the unsuspecting cup holder. Laughter and merriment ensued, just like today when people are victims of practical jokes.

The Tantalus cup sounds like a dribble glass, but that prank simply has holes hidden in a design on the side so that the liquid leaks when the cup is tipped. The Tantalus cup has a much more elegant design based on the physics of a siphon and can be traced to the Greek mathematician Pythagoras, who is more famous for his theorem: “In a right-angled triangle the square of the hypotenuse is equal [to the sum of] the squares of the two other sides” or a2 + b2 = c2. Pythagoras wasn’t exactly a prankster and his invention was better known as the Greedy cup after its true purpose – to keep drinkers from imbibing too much.

Those joking Romans. Hobbs thinks the silver Tantalus cup possibly belonged to Valentinian I (aka Emperor Valentinian the Great) or his brother and co-emperor Valens, who were born in Vinkovci and ruled there in the 4th century. That could be tough to prove, since there are no stories of Valentinian beating up his brother for pulling the practical joke on him.

FYI … they’re called “practical” jokes because they’re physical rather than oral or written and are supposed to be lighthearted and embarrassing, but not cruel.

Yeah, right.

Hobbs is working on a model of the Tantalus bowl, which is on display at a museum in Zagreb, so that he can test the siphoning theory.

Let the other employees at the British Museum beware, especially on April 1st.
