Membership of the 114th Congress

Jennifer E. Manning, Senior Research Librarian
September 7, 2016

This report presents a profile of the membership of the 114th Congress (2015-2016). Statistical information is included on selected characteristics of Members, including data on party affiliation, average age, occupation, education, length of congressional service, religious affiliation, gender, ethnicity, foreign births, and military service.

As of September 7, 2016, in the House of Representatives, there are 247 Republicans (including 1 Delegate), 191 Democrats (including 4 Delegates and the Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico), and three vacancies.

The Senate has 54 Republicans, 44 Democrats, and 2 Independents, who both caucus with the Democrats.

The average age of Members of the House at the beginning of the 114th Congress was 57.0 years; of Senators, 61.0 years, among the highest of any Congress in recent U.S. history.

The overwhelming majority of Members of Congress have a college education. The dominant professions of Members are PUBLIC SERVICE/POLITICS, business, and law.

Most Members identify as Christians, and Protestants collectively constitute the majority religious affiliation. Roman Catholics account for the largest single religious denomination, and numerous other affiliations are represented.

The average length of service for Representatives at the beginning of the 114th Congress was 8.8 years (4.4 terms); for Senators, 9.7 years (1.6 terms).

One hundred eight women (a record number) serve in the 114th Congress: 88 in the House, including 4 Delegates, and 20 in the Senate. There are 45 African American Members of the House and 2 in the Senate. This House number includes two Delegates. There are 38 Hispanic or Latino Members (a record number) serving: 34 in the House, including 1 Delegate and the Resident Commissioner, and 4 in the Senate.

Thirteen Members (10 Representatives, 2 Delegates, and 1 Senator) are Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders. Two American Indians (Native Americans) serve in the House.

At the beginning of the 114th Congress, there were 101 Members (18.7% of the total membership) who had served or were serving in the military.

Disbelief, anger and Ryan Gosling's giggling: reaction to the La La Land-Moonlight Oscars mistake

By Rebecca Hawkes
27 February 2017

In one of the most jaw-droppingly awkward moments in Oscars history, the wrong best picture winner was announced at the 2017 Academy Awards.

Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway told the audience that Damien Chazelle's La La Land had claimed the award - when in fact the winner was Barry Jenkins's Moonlight.

The mistake was only discovered after the team behind La La Land had taken to the stage.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter was quick to react to the embarrassing reversal, with a number of celebrities and viewers choosing to make topical jokes about the mess-up.

Here is my comment about last night's slip-up that I sent to my brother-in-law:

Kimmel Leads the "Oscar Celebration" into just another Trump gripe session.... And THEN, it happens! One of the biggest screw-ups in Oscar history! "The Best Picture Goes to.....La La La La twitter tweet tweet"! Oh Karma! You are such a beeyitch!

FRESH: DNA Tests Reveal Subway's Chicken Sandwiches Are Just Half Chicken

Subway's prides themselves on serving the 'freshest' ingredients. The main question is, what exactly are in the ingredients?

According to DNA tests conducted by Trent University and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Subway's chicken fillets, found in their Oven Roasted Chicken sandwich, had just 53.6% chicken in it, while their sumptuous strips, found in their delicious Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwich, contained only 42.8% chicken.

In case you're wondering, the remainder of the 'chicken' substance is made from soy.

Subway's Canada responded to the findings with the following statement.

“SUBWAY Canada cannot confirm the veracity of the results of the lab testing you had conducted,” the company said, adding, “Our chicken strips and oven roasted chicken contain 1% or less of soy protein. We use this ingredient in these products as a means to help stabilize the texture and moisture. All of our chicken items are made from 100% white meat chicken which is marinated, oven roasted and grilled.”

Related: CBC and Trend also tested the chicken from fast food chains, including A&W, McDonald's, Tim Horton's and Wendy's -- most of which contained 80-90% chicken.

Here's a video of the results below.
