Cliff,
The math has been done many times before and the original formula was called the Drake Equation. Depending on what variables one plugs into the original Drake Equation you can get as little as one sentient race or tens of thousands or more...in our Galaxy. Obviously the number would be far greater when one includes all the other galaxies.
Life could be abundant out there......the odds that sentient species evolve is much less and the odds that they survive to reach tech levels to travel in space is even less.

Earth is on the edge of a very basic galaxy....even in our own galaxy would a sentient alien race find their way to earth out on the outer rim? It's possible but I think those who believe in all these aliens buzzing around in our skies are wishing on a star.
wink

We did what....?
We 'got here' by evolution according to anyone that matters. wink
As I said I'm sure that others have evolved out there but to assume that an alien race found us via space travel on the rim of our galaxy could be wishful thinking.

You're getting as bad as Zetar with the posting of odd pics that usually have nothing to do with the thread....or at least are so cryptic they get lost in translation.

Which is exactly what the Drake Equation postulated many years ago......that depending on what numbers one wants to use and plug into the formula the math will give you some number of sentient civilizations out there.
The number of a trillion (even over 'cosmic history') is simply pure speculation imho and probably would be argued hotly among scientists themselves.

One should also factor in the number of species just on this one rock....or speck of nano dust which we reside on.
