55 Years Ago Today! The Space Age Began! (Almost)

July 17, 1962: X-15 Breaks Altitude Record

By Weitering Hanneke, Staff Writer-Producer
July 17, 2017

On July 17, 1962, the American test pilot Bob White broke the world record for the highest altitude flight.

White took off from Edwards Air Force Base in a rocket-powered X-15 aircraft and made it to an altitude of 314,750 feet (95,935 meters). That's almost 60 miles (96 kilometers)!

At the time, the Air Force considered the edge of space to be 50 miles (80 km) above the Earth, not the 62 miles (100 km) currently observed as a baseline. So White received astronaut wings for his record-breaking spaceflight.

And that's what happened today in space!

...and a mere 55 years later, we're talking about colonizing Mars.....
