Steven Spielberg has agreed to produce 'Taken', a
20-hour miniseries dedicated to alien abductions, for
Barry Diller's Sci-Fi Channel. Spielberg's DreamWorks
Television will produce the miniseries in a joint venture
with USA Networks Inc. (USAI - news), parent of the
Sci-Fi Channel.

Nearly two decades have passed since audiences
tearfully watched E.T. phone home. Now, Steven
Spielberg makes a new journey, as he joins forces
with SCI FI Channel to return to one of his first loves
-science fiction. In 3Q 2000, Spielberg and
DreamWorks Television will present Taken, a 20-hour
original dramatic event, which will be produced
exclusively for SCI FI. Taken's 20-hour length also
marks it as the most ambitious miniseries ever
produced for broadcast television or cable.

SCI FI was Spielberg's first choice for his return to
the genre which he was so instrumental in shaping.
The channel's renewed commitment to, and
investment in, producing the freshest and most
original sci-fi programming on television has paid off
with breakout ratings in recent months. By the time
Taken airs in 3Q 2000, SCI FI will have more than
doubled its programming budget from '98 -- making it
second only to sister channel USA Network in its
commitment to original series and production for basic
cable in prime. Together, Spielberg, DreamWorks
Television and SCI FI form a unique alliance, as they
usher sci-fi into the coming millennium.

``As a 20-hour miniseries,'' said Spielberg, ``the
project can give us the opportunity to involve viewers
in a way that combines the narrative scope of movies
with the luxury of unfolding that adventure over a
much longer period of time. There clearly was no other
place but SCI FI Channel for a project of this
magnitude. At SCI FI, fans like myself can imagine and
experience the wonders and possibilities of the
science fiction universe.''

Taken is an epic science fiction adventure that weaves
together over 50 years of alien abductions into the
compelling story of one man's experiences. The
miniseries, which begins production this summer,
promises to be one of TV's most ambitious productions
ever. Exploring a series of personal stories and events
which defy the traditional confines of a two-hour
feature film or even a four-hour miniseries, SCI FI will
present this unprecedented 20-hour television
milestone in two-hour installments over a span of ten
days.

This thread is for members to voice their opinion of just how much influence the new Spielberg series "TAKEN" will have on its audience. Even though television and motion picture productions are highly dramatized, this one promises to be a "stick to the facts" mini-series about alien abduction.

Let us know what you think about the influence "TAKEN" will have. Will it open some minds?

Hey, I am right there with the rest of you. I have a schedule made out. A few of the nights I have to work I am getting someone to tape it, and watch it the next day. I know that all of Spielbergs movies are great, and I dont' think this will be any different.

The way they are advertising it on scifi they are putting a lot of confidence in it and it won't disappoint them. It has to have an impact on even the disbelievers.

I already told everyone in my household that I will do everything else around here, but by golly those two hours are going to be mine every night for 10 days.

I have no doubts that this is really going to be big time.
I sure hope people will watch and open up to the possibility of alien abduction. it really is happening.

Hey, folks it's the rocketman again. Let me see, yeah, I am all for this new thing. This Taken will make some people sit up and take a look for sure. If they don't someday they will look like fools. Close minded folks get me right where it hurts , a pain in the a.... you know.

The people who have suffered through alien abdcutions should be angry to those who don't believe them and their stories. Hey that's a bad feeling, being done that way, and then told you are a liar. Come on Taken.

A good friend of mine 'Sandy Nichols' will have his story told on this show, I'm not sure exactly when or what episode it will be...
You can read a bit about it at his site, his book is called "A Different Child - A Story Of Alien Abductions"

Well, I was thinking at least I won't have to wait in any long line to get a ticket for this one. I made sure I paid my bill on time there's no way I'm gonna miss this series. I plan on taping the whole thing and watching it over whenever I want to. I also think it will be very popular

The Sci-Fi channel is promoting this series to the max. I finally took the plunge today and just waited for everything to load. It is all Macromedia Flash and it does take some time to see all of it. I thought I would get a few more of the images and put them up here in case any of you don't want the long wait.

These are much smaller than those I have uploaded to my website, I will post the urls below if any of you want to bypass the wait at the scifi.com. The images are numbered from top to bottom as 1-5. They are all 800X600.

Sci-Fi also has a fabulous interactive screensaver that I downloaded, it is well over 3 megs. You can get to it by going here:

I also copied the synopsis of the series, and will post it on the next three posts. The Sci-Fi site broke it down into three parts. See next three posts.

Abduction

Taken is an epic saga that weaves together the stories of three families over multiple generations and their crucial roles in the history of alien abductions. Set against the backdrop of actual historical events, Taken creates a powerfully emotional and evocative tale of mankind's encounters with extraterrestrials. The story begins with RUSSELL KEYS, an American WWII pilot who is dying of a bullet wound while his plane spirals down into enemy territory. Blue lights on the horizon interrupt his plane's descent and some time later he and his squadron find themselves mysteriously whole and healed, on safe ground with absolutely no memory of how they got there.

Only years later, as each member of the squadron dies inexplicably, does Russell understand that his life has been forever altered by his first alien encounter. Haunted, he searches for answers to his unfolding memories, only to realize he is powerless to prevent his son and subsequent generations from also becoming abductees. See next post for part 2...

Investigation

When the 1947 crash of a UFO near Roswell, N.M., occurs a few years after Russell's first encounter, U.S. military man OWEN CRAWFORD leverages his knowledge to become a major player in the subsequent cover-up and secret government investigation of the E.T. presence.

This begins a decades-long effort by the Crawford family to use the government's investigations to secure their own powerful legacy and to stop anyone who gets in their way. See next post for part 3..

Encounter

Finally, shortly after the Roswell crash, a chance encounter with a wounded man nearby sets off its own strange chain of events. SALLY CLARKE is a lonely woman who unexpectedly finds love in the arms of a stranger. Despite Sally's conviction that she has interacted with something not of this world, the other members of the Clarke family are unconvinced, even after she bears a son, JACOB, who manifests remarkable intuitive powers. Skepticism eventually evolves into obsessive belief, but too late to save the family from being pulled deeper into the secret designs of both the government and the extraterrestrial presence.

The grand scale of these three families' tale, as told through the voice of Russell's 10-year-old great-granddaughter, ALLIE KEYS, explores generations of extraterrestrial encounters beginning in the skies over Germany during the Second World War to the modern tales of abduction that include the 1977 release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. As we reach the present day, the decades of secrets unravel and all three families must come together to unlock the awe-inspiring mysteries of being Taken.
