Well we have heard a lot of stories about this secret area but to me honest I dont really believe whats said in this documentary. They claim its a military base but I am sure there are more things up there.

By the way its cool video.

Hi Porki and welcome to Casebook. Yes it's more than a military base there's probably a lot of experimental aircraft and maybe a lot more going on there. I just wish someone would slip out real footage from Inside Area 51.

There's been a lot of documentaries on it but none that's ever actually taken you inside. Only people telling you of their experience. I want to see inside a Hanger.

"Inside Area 51" (Discovery, 1997) remains one of the best documentaries on Area 51. The program's only real flaw was the late addition of Jim Wilson (beginning at about 00:37:00) with his idiotic story about the base having closed and moved to Utah or Colorado. Wilson's interview was thrown in at the last minute without any time to have rebuttal comments before production was completed.

Another, truly excellent documentary is "Area 51 Declassified" (National Geographic, 2011). It includes a lot of interviews with former Area 51 workers and material based on declassified documents and other inside sources. Unfortunately, it mostly covers the early history of the base with very little about later programs.

Fortunately, National Geographic has just released "Area 51: The CIA's Secret Files." It aired for the first time in England on October 31. The U.S. release date has not yet been announced. This is a good follow-on to the previous work because it includes more interviews with insiders, newly declassified material, and takes the story beyond the early days and up to more recent projects.

Area 51 is most definitely "just a military base" in the sense that it is owned and operated by the Air Force just like any of their other facilities. Its purpose is, as it always has been, to support testing and evaluation of classified advanced manned and unmanned aircraft, as well as for evaluating foreign military aircraft and weapon systems. Organizationally, the base is operated as a Test Wing assigned to the Air Force Test Center. It is staffed by approximately 500 military and DOD civilian personnel, and nearly 2,000 contractors.
