Bill Cosby and Bigfoot

Now, before anybody starts jumping to conclusions: no one has come forward accusing Bill Cosby of running around sans clothes in the forest!

What I wanted to examine is how our beliefs are formed. I am not sure how close any of you have been following the Bill Cosby story the last few years, but it started with ONE lone accuser. And perhaps like many of you I remember thinking something like: “Poor Bill, some crazy woman pops up falsely accusing him of wrong-doing”. I mean it had to be false, right. After all there was no evidence.

But then another woman came forward with a similar story, and another and another and another and looking at them, some were famous, semi-famous or at least upstanding citizens with no reason to lie. And as the accusations piled up, I recall thinking that the accusations MUST be true, after all, why would all these people be lying(?) What would their motivation be to lie? Money? Fame? Fortune? Many of them already had those!

As the reports have now grown to 50 (or more), is there anyone who has followed the media reports that can logically look at this case and say that it is still probably false and unbelievable due to a lack of physical evidence?

Sometimes you do not need physical evidence, sometimes enough people telling the same story IS enough to convince others that they are telling the truth! While other times evidence is useless, just ask OJ…

Throughout human history people have taken other peoples word, sometimes it is truthful and other times people have been false witnesses, but at this stage of humanity, I think there is a large portion of society that can use logic and deductive reasoning to form their own beliefs.

While the government (justice system) may ultimately decide Bill's actual innocence or guilt, I am just looking at what shapes our beliefs!

It is natural part of the human thought-process to establish beliefs based on one major factor, which is; Information.

Information comes from everywhere and builds throughout your life with sources including, personal experiences (staring in childhood), parents, family, friends, teachers, books, the internet, the media, etc. If you think about it – we are constantly bombarded by information on a daily basis. So much so, that we learn to filter it out, retaining what we feel is important and discarding what is not!

Someone who has NOT followed the case or heard any of the accusations against Bill, if questioned about it, may certainly take the stance that he is innocent while another fully informed individual may be completely convinced of his guilt!

So a persons’ thoughts on any subject is based on the amount of information they have acquired on the subject and I do not necessarily mean more information equals guilt, I mean that the more information one has on a subject, the more informed or accurate their opinion or beliefs are!

With that in mind, let’s move on to Bigfoot, (who has never been reported to have drugged and sexually assaulted any women) but has been repeatedly reported to have been seen running around the forests, naked.

The majority of the information the average person has concerning Bigfoot is from the media and centers around the goofy jerky commercials, Harry & the Henderson’s or the notion that the only people reporting Bigfoot sightings are some hillbillies up in the Ozarks (no offense meant to the fine people who reside there).

As far as information goes, would it surprise any of you to know that there has been over (5) times more Bigfoot reports (per year) than the total number of Bill Cosby accusations? That is over 250 per year for the last 50 years! That comes out to 12,500 and here is the scary part; it is estimated that less than one-in-ten are actually reported (mostly due to the ridicule – that society heaps upon those who say they have seen one) making the total number of estimated actual reports/sightings over 100,000!

So why do we as a society, have no problem believing Bill is guilty based on 50 reports, when there are well over 10,000 Bigfoot reports out there, (from people of all walks of life, including politicians, law enforcement, doctors, lawyers, military, hunters, farmers, truckers, students, teachers, etc.) that no one (except the thousands that have had encounters) take seriously?

It’s time for the government to stop denying the existence of Bigfoot and start an open research on the subject, presenting the evidence it has to a public that is paying their salaries!

Does massive media coverage imply proof?

Consider the McMartin Preschool Case and the Richard Jewell case. In both of those examples the media covered the case with venom dripping from the reporters pens. No pretense at fairness, the media proclaimed everyone guilty and the naive and gullible public hung on to every word.
In both cases, all parties were later found to be totally innocent and fully exonerated, although after millions of dollars were spent and lives were ruined, and the innocent parties driven to bankruptcy. At least in the Jewell case the FBI did the honorable thing and publicly apologized.
Is Cosby innocent or guilty? I do not know. I am not going to let the media tell me. I no longer believe any media outlet as telling the whole truth from either side.

Bigfoot is the same thing. Most of the so-called 'reports' are someone stating They saw a furtive movement in the dense forest and they could not be certain what it was, ergo it was a bigfoot. I am convinced many of the reports on the bigfoot websites are fabrications, either from the submitters or from the website managers themselves. " We have not had a report for a while. We need to make one up to maintain viewership."
The number of sightings that are credible and make a skeptical biologist sit up and notice are very few.

How many 'Bigfoot' sightings do we need before we take it seriously?
Is there an actual quantitative number?
I'm not defending Mythos' post above which imho is a little silly in comparing it to Mr Cosby's troubles, but there's a point in there.
Many credible witnesses have seen what they consider a bipedal ape and not a bear.
The same analogy goes for the ufo enigma which would have been a better analogy than Cosby and Bigfoot. Thousands upon thousands have seen unusual aerial objects over the years. Doesn't automatically make them alien space craft but something has been seen for a long time. While I am skeptical these are all alien ships it's possible that some are.
The point is that people are seeing somethingthey are not describing as a bear or man. Are all of them hoaxing or nearsighted?

Perhaps a lot of it is simply human nature. People misidentify things, are mistaken and have other biases come into play. Eye witness accounts are not infallible nor are the protocols used to interview witnesses. Recollection and the mind can be tricky.

I agree....but as in ufos the amount of sightings are staggering.
Either 'something unknown' is being seen in both cases or humans have some unknown psychological issues (or some other unknown phenomenon) we are not aware of as yet.

Good points by all, while I do concede that UFO's and Bigfoot have a credibility issue, a demand for more concrete proof, if you will, but there are other differences that keep Bigfoot research "grounded" here on earth.

The general thinking on Bigfoot is that it is a species of an as-of-yet undiscovered member of some ape/human family tree.

You are not asked to believe in time portals, other dimensions, abductions, greys, space ships, mind speak, no hypnotizing of witnesses or any of the dozens of other theories which abound in the UFO realm.

It's just an animal, it eats, it craps, it mates, it reproduces, it walks, it sits, it runs, it jumps, it sleeps, it dies, just like every other terrestrial creature.

Another difference is where to find them: UFO's are kinda hard to figure out where you can go to see one; Area 51? You may just be seeing experiment aircraft, I suppose you could go to Sam's house..

But for Bigfoot, they are located and seen it remote areas, typically away from major civic centers, way back in the woods, swamps and mountains. You can look where the reports are concentrated: Have any of you looked at the BFRO site to see the reports in your state?

Neither are a recent phenomenon, we all know that the first UFO's were NOT spotted in the late 1940's, although that is when most of the hype started.

Well, same with Bigfoot, it did not start in 1967 with the Patterson-Gimlin film. There are dozens of reports all the way back to the early 1900's. There are local newspaper reports all through the 1800's of some "hairy wild-men", some reports mentioned them resembling gorillas, that exhibited the same behaviors that are reported today! And nearly every North American Indian tribe has stories going back hundreds of years about these hairy giants, they knew of them, long before the white-men showed up.

Now there is another important difference, UFO reports vary in the shapes of the aliens and their space ships, rarely do reports match, this is something that troubles me and I'm sure troubles others (and researchers).

However, with Bigfoot reports, they are generally reporting similar features, traits, manners, actions, movement, etc.

Not sure why people have trouble with this next concept, but it is something skeptics (in both camps) generally choose to ignore or are simply ignorant to and that is: There is nothing pre-programmed in our "Human Nature" to (erroneously) report the same general descriptions! I mean to say no one is reporting dragons, elves, or pink Easter bunnies, they are (and have been) reporting a human/ape face!

And there have been reports of them peeking in windows, so people have seen them VERY close, sometime multiple people, there is little chance of mis-identification, other than seeing something that is not officially acknowledged!
