Bigfoot in our backyard? Locals on the hunt as they film movie on fabled creature......(Florida Panhandle)

Nada Hassanein, Democrat staff writer
Published 3:00 p.m. ET Aug. 26, 2017

Clad in camouflage-patterned pants, black shirts and weathered hiking boots, Stacy Brown Jr. and Chris Godwin lead the way into a hilly, dark Chattahoochee forest.

Halfway through the hike, thunder begins to roll from afar.

“Chris, check the weather radar,” Brown says to his Bigfoot searching partner Chris Godwin. They've been trekking the forests of the Big Bend for years, hoping to spot the legendary creature.

No rain for now. The duo continues.

After walking uphill, Brown decides to stop to try some "calls," which he says are meant to attract the fabled creature.

Everyone turns off their flashlights and crouches down in the dark.

Brown calls out into the dead of night.

A few more moments of silence pass before he tries a loud grunt. It echoes and dissipates — and then a rustle in the darkness shifts everyone's attention.

It was only a possum — half false alarm, half disappointment.

Brown does many of these hikes. The 31-year-old Crawfordville man calls himself a Bigfoot researcher. There’s a nationwide community of them: academics, enthusiasts, bloggers.

Brown says he saw one in the Chattahoochee forest six years ago. Ever since then, he says all his doubts about their existence have disappeared.

He sold his boat, his truck and quit his band for a while, devoting his time to research, exploration and leading young enthusiasts on expeditions to places where sightings have been reported.

When Brown was little, he’d watch shows like “In Search of…” and “Sightings” with his father. It all intrigued him: the paranormal, the mysterious – and the tall, heavy and furry. His interest in the latter stayed with him until now.

Brown's 2011 sighting was behind Chattahoochee resident Carolyn Bridges' property.

Bridges was featured on the Animal Planet show Finding Bigfoot in 2011. She says she’s had numerous eerie experiences during her 16 years of living in her home that's dimly lit with deer-antler chandeliers and Gothic-Italian stained glass lamps.

She doesn't claim to have seen one like Brown, but the retired arson investigator says she and her husband Bill have heard growling screams, howls at night and large prints on their glass doors and windows. She shows a video she recorded of her dog trembling after hearing the growl.

“We’ve been ridiculed as crazy,” Bridges said.

She used to jog the trails every morning. Now, Bridges and her husband keep guns at their bedsides.

They’ve dubbed their two large dogs as their protectors.

“I will not go out this door without my dog,” she says.

Brown saw Bridges on the Finding Bigfoot show and contacted her. Since then, the two say they’ve been go-tos for other locals, enthusiasts and researchers around the state who have shared with them similar experiences.

He was featured in 2014 on the Spike T.V. show "10 Million Dollar Bigfoot Bounty" and won.

He leads expeditions and camp-outs in the Chattahoochee area and around the state, taking enthusiasts through where sightings have been supposedly reported to him.

Brown is filming a movie called “Creatures” about locals’ experiences, with Bridges’ as a focal point.

Geoffrey Thomas, Florida State University biological anthropologist professor, says while there are many animal species around the world that have not been discovered yet, there isn’t evidence of a Bigfoot in North America.

“There's no scientific, peer-reviewed evidence of any species that could be described as a Bigfoot,” he said.

Usually the species is described as being a 7-foot-tall ape-like creature.

"There are no indigenous primates in North America in fossil record or modern living species,” he said, “which goes against the idea of a bipedal 7-foot-tall ape in Florida."

Other academics around the country disagree, like Idaho State University’s Jeffrey Meldrum, anatomy and anthropology professor well-known in the community for tracking material on the creature.

Years ago, in a transcription of a National Public Radio interview with Ira Flatow, Meldrum says, “I don't use the word I believe in the existence of Bigfoot. To me, that connotes a conviction in the absence of proof or evidence, at least.

“I simply say that the evidence is there."

In a 2016 FOX 13 story, Meldrum explains the creature is rare but plausible.

“I’m convinced these creatures, while they very likely exist, are extremely rare. They are large animals, top predators, so there just aren’t that many of them out in the environment.”

Brown is persistent.

“I want my name to go down in history,” he said, “as the person who discovered the species — or was a part of the group that did."

Interesting stuff!

No surprise that there are Bigfoot reports from Florida, as according the the BFRO sight, Florida trails only California and Washington in total posted reports!
