The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him.

I enjoyed reading it too.... but what did you all make of the sailing ship floating in the air? Its as crazy as these buildings that people are seeing floating in the air these days. What on earth is going on?
Is it some sort of bleed through from another dimension?

I agree it's an interesting story. Ancient Aliens touched on the Cotton Mather story in an episode about early sightings as well as the Christopher Columbus sighting on his way to America.

I guess they had swamp gas and weather balloons back then too! grin

Yes, that too!

What I find most interesting about these stories is their context: to the 17th century Bostonians these apparitions were clearly interpreted as ghosts and glowing spirit apparitions. My question is, why call them "UFOs", weather balloons or swamp gas at all?

Those are only our contemporary interpretations of something that was understood in different terms altogether in 17th century Boston. Which is correct?

Given the stories themselves and the very clear connections the witnesses had to the resulting narrative, I think it is more than a little presumptuous to call them "UFOs". For one thing, none of these stories suggest that these apparitions were materially real. In fact, it was openly accepted that they were "apparitions": visionary experiences without real substance. Why should we question that description?

Just because we have a hard time accepting the "reality" of such things given modern belief systems, does not mean that our calling them "UFOs" is any more valid than calling them "ghost ships" or "spirit apparitions". In fact, I would say that the "ghost ship" description is more appropriate given the description provided for the latter incident.

Of course, the splitting off and returning of portions of -

"a light resembling the moon rose from the water at the wreck, sailed through the air till it was over the highest point of 'Nottle's Island,' now East Bostonóbut then uninhabited, and an ideal place for ghostly gambolsóand there it was met by its twin light, the two suddenly merging into one, then parting, and thus continuing uniting and separating, as if in playful mood, many times, all the while 'shooting out sometimes flames and sometimes sparkles."

- does resemble a modern "UFO" sighting. But the question needs to be asked: does our modern appellation "UFO" really describe what this apparition actually WAS?

We are treading on shaky ground here. We can see the commonality between the Boston incident and modern UFO sightings. We can also see the differences in interpretation. Only a blind believer could suggest that one description is the "correct" one and the other a "false" description. Remember, a UFO is unidentified. Only foolish people apply positive identifications to things which are not well understood.....

Just sayin'....... wink
